Voice acting in Episode 3 of The Icebrood Saga

As the world continues to fight the spread of COVID-19, we’re working remotely on content updates for Guild Wars 2. Because the recording studio staff and voice actors who help bring Guild Wars 2 to life are also abiding by shelter-in-place guidance to keep the virus from spreading, we’ve chosen to release the upcoming third episode of The Icebrood Saga without voice acting.

This was a difficult decision to make, but we want to keep releasing content updates for the community to enjoy on a regular schedule. When it’s safe, we’ll create a high-quality studio recording so we can update the episode with voiced lines.

The trailer for the next episode of The Icebrood Saga, “No Quarter,” arrives next week, and we can’t wait for you to see what’s in store! In the meantime, we’d like to share some messages from members of our amazing English Guild Wars 2 voice-acting cast.

Stay safe, Tyria!

Seems totally sensible and to be honest will make going through with an alt when you have added the recording in that little bit extra unique as well

Would have happily accepted a delay so it's all good in the end

Nice little video ^^ I dunno why, but I expected that the person behind Nicabar to look like that in real life. (It's a compliment! No hurty.)
All the voice actors do an awesome voice acting. I kinda find it strange (maybe it's just me) that some voice actors literally look like the character they are dubbing.

I appriciate the heads up and the difficulty this decision must have been to make for everyone.

But if im being honest I would have preferred the content to be delayed and released with the voice acting later on.. and it would have been very understandable if this had been the decision as well.

First impressions stick with me personally so a big part of me wants to avoid playing the new content until the voice acting comes in.. and that's going to put me in a odd situation.
I'm going to miss out on the new patch new map hype and activity for one thing which is going to put me a bit behind.. but more so it's going to leave me very open to having the new story spoiled before I get to play it.

Hopefully the latter won't happen and hopefully the voice acting won't be missing for too long but we can never predict these things..

Thanks for the heads up. :)

Like many other people I'd have completely understood if the entire episode had to be delayed due to covid-19, but I think it makes sense if everything else is ready to go, we don't know how long the lockdown will last and there's a whole bunch of people stuck at home who would appreciate a new GW2 release to play it makes sense to go ahead with what you can do. Although maybe it's easier for me because I often have to play without sound, so as much as I like hearing the voice acting when I can I'm used to playing without it.

Also I found it surprising seeing what all the voice actors look like, and hearing how they speak normally. The charr and sylvari PC guys especially really surprised me with how different their normal voices and their acting voices are. If I hadn't seen them do it I almost wouldn't believe it was the same person each time!

(Also totally unrelated to anything but Cherise Boothe who voices Crecia has amazing dreads!)

If this video means that the Steel Legion make an appearance, then I'm very glad. Forged Steel gave us some of the most fun NPCs in the game.

It's a shame, would've preferred if it was delayed all together over this.

You have the option to play it without VO in 2 weeks, or wait till they update it and play it then. I don't see how forcing everyone to wait would've been preferable.

Of course this is tough, as the voice acting got so well integrated in the storytelling, but it's absolutely understandable. Thank you for making a good compromise here.

I wish all the international VA teams all the best. Stay safe. :)

I'm in the wait camp as well, the 2 main concerns with doing it though are missing out on the new map experience which is always a highlight of having new content added.
The other is the risk of having the story spoiled for us.

I don't mind that Anet opted to go without the VA.. but i'd be lying if I said I wasn't worry about getting the content spoiled for me down the road.

I'm sure this was a very difficult decision, the voice acting is hugely important to the story but I'm really glad that you went this way.

Perfectly reasonable. We dont know when you'll be able to move again, so if it takes a very long time, the game might stall for extended periods of time.

First of, thanks for letting us know. :):+1:

Secondly, why on Earth do you make that male Charr PC's actor's wonderful voice sound so awful in the game?? Seriously, please stop messing with it, it sounds so much better in its natural timbre (he is already doing such a great job speaking in a lower register).

  • Taelac.7036Taelac.7036 Member ✭✭✭

I very much appreciate the care shown to the voice actors that make the game come to life, and also that the episode will be released on schedule, anyway. I look forward to replaying the story when it's safe for the actors to perform, and it will be very nice to have some new content to play with in the meantime. I wasn't planning to buy gems this month, but I'll be doing so when I log in tonight in a modest demonstration of support for doing the right thing.

    Good luck, have fun.

  • What I want to know is was the option to have the VA's record their voice lines from their own homes ever considered a option, and why was it ultimately decided against?
In this day and age it's not only easy but quite standard for VA's to work from home especially when it comes to smaller or side projects or when they are just starting out, and all that's really needed is a proper professional grade microphone that only costs a few hundred dollars. You can still have the other person listening in live in a call and giving feedback too and have the recorded files sent over for a proper inspection and editing.

I understand that no matter what though, any studio record audio will always have a higher/better end product (for example being able to do live group recordings), but using your own argument, why not at least have some recorded voice lines and then re-record it later in a studio setting? Is there really that great of a concern that the quality would just be too under par? Or (which I highly doubt its the case) do the employed VA's not have the skills or resources to be able to do recordings at home?

I'm not going to try to argue that it was a bad or wrong decision to delay the voice lines as I'm sure ArenaNet have their procedures and standards when it comes to creating content, but I'm very curious to know what they are as like I said in the beginning, in this age of technology we live in it's both relatively easy and cheap to perform almost all levels of game development from home be it coding, design or even audio.

  • I'd much rather have the content and get the voice acting later, especially as someone who is not able to go to work at the moment. I need my diversions. :p

The obvious reason is $$$, they'd have to pay VAs twice, one for the home-recording and one for the studio recording later.
And I hope you understand that it's a totally unreasonable solution.

I think they should just have different events/event buffs, working in the previous episode areas, and release the episode later on when it's complete, that would work perfectly for us people who just came back to play with the free icebrood saga episodes. or like events to liven up the old areas.

I guess this means not hearing Braham whine about his mommy, his guild, and/or his bow. It probably doesn't need any voice acting to think of it roflmao.

No voice acting doesn't have to be a bad thing - it sounds like a good chance to get a guild together and do our own voice acting (over discord, with whoever is online at the time). It shall be a glorious train wreck.

I know part of this depends on the government's lifting of sheltering orders, but is there any kind of timeline projection for when the voices will go in? It would help to know if it might be worth it to postpone a story run until the voices are there, or whether to write off the voices for a secondary playthrough. Are we talking about getting the voice actors into the office as soon as businesses are allowed to reopen, or having to schedule for it months after the fact due to pipelining issues?

With it following the end of the SAB festival, something that might help is if Anet implemented some gibberish sounds as a placeholder for the characters' voices, to kill the silence and maybe add a bit of humor as we live through these dire circumstances. It would be an opportunity to make the lack of real voices into a feature.

    I disagree with this.

Why not have they record at home, include the substandard voice overs, and accept it as part of what the plague does to society.

I hope you are at least paying them retainer fees.

Thank you for communicating and for putting the effort to continue to deliver content to us.
Would have gladly waited in case you guys decided to delay the episode as well, but I hope people understand that in the scenario we are living now, the outcome of this pandemic, as to when we will all be able to resume our activities normaly, is just unpredictable to take that risk. And to have the team doing it remotely might just be undoable, since voice acting isn't just record your voice and put it on the game.
The immersion and the playthrough will take a hit? Absolutely, but these are hard times and I think we all can just get past over it.

    HA HA HA, no.

You made the right choice, i prefer this ober a delay and it comming later anyways means ill have more reason to replay it down the line.

  • Perhaps it is possible to add a title: Tyria's voices do matter, or something like that when this episode is reworked with voices so we can show support to the voice actors.

  • Shame...the voice acting is actually my favorite part of Living World.
Ah well, this'll give me a reason to go back and play it a second time, when the voice acting is added later!

We live in interesting times. A pandemic, where at least for now, we can still do many of the things we do, to calm us, feel normal, escape. Honestly, that not having voiced characters is even a concern, shows what we come to expect from video games, and not having them will force our imaginations to kick in. To me, this is a good thing. Losing one sense if you will, will heighten the rest. Maybe it's just me, but I'll hear the voices anyway, at least from the regular characters, Braham, etc.

Anet you are impressing me greatly with how you are stepping up. I play a lot of online games (being old does that lol). I've said it many times in game chat, guild chat, "Anet gets more right than they do wrong." And most experienced gamers agree. We've seen way worse. The Evil Alliance springs to mind. Stay safe, be well, and meh, it's just another day in Tyria. Some will say not hearing certain characters is good lol

    Peace..
