I think it's pretty obvious they've shifted the vast majority of the studio over to the expansion. It does make me wonder how many people they still have working specifically on Guild Wars 2 though, or have had for awhile that they have to ship the remaining people working on the live game over to it.

But I imagine it's pretty hectic as it all seems last minute and unplanned.

As far as this episode, I set my expectations extremely low and and to be honest it was alright for what I was expecting. The story instances were alright. They added some dialogue to touch on a few things we've been wondering about in terms of lore like the pale tree, touching on the dead elder dragon's magics effects on Primordus. They brought back a few people like Taimi and Gorrik which was nice.

Story-wise, it was a decent little play through even if it wasn't overly exciting but it's nice to get a break from the Charr story. I think one bad thing about the saga in general right now is that every episode is just Jormag being vague about everything. It's good for build up, but at some point it feels like we're going to be on the last episode and something will happen and it still won't really be that impactful because it's had TOO MUCH build, like snails pace constant dialogue kind of build up.

In general, it's pretty much what I expected though and I've pretty much stuck with logging in on release days and then disappearing till the next. It's honestly more enjoyable that way and I think it helped me appreciate this patch more. In terms of development time and the resources that went into making it? I don't know. I mean, I'm pretty content with the 2 hours it took me to do these missions and story content until the next content drop and will probably never replay it again. So if there's a lot of people with the same mindset then it's probably not the best type of content they could have released. But some of that could be mitigated in the future with more appealing rewards to grind for, like a new armor set, a strike mission tossed in.

As far as the Response Missions - not something I would repeat more than the first play through in the story. Long, relatively boring, rewards are laughable as usual. No interest in any of the recolored weapon sets or the new axe skin when I'll wind up replacing them all with near-legendary gemstore skins or actual legendary skins at some point anyway. Still not really sure what the point of the allied faction stuff is but no real desire to find out as I've done the story and don't plan on replaying the missions.

To those of you that are disappointed, yes, I get it. It's pretty dull, but they're fully committing to the expansion and the only thing you can really do is play the new releases if you're interested for the story and then take a break till the next and quell your expectations until the expansion drops.

I probably won't replay the older episodes either despite it being refreshing having voice acting again. I think a lot of us are kind of just ready to put this whole "Saga" behind us.

Honestly though, I would almost prefer a watered down vision of the past than this, but I guess that would take environment artists and more people that they have left working on the live game so it is what it is.

I think if you approach it from a state of complete apathy and just accept that the studio seems to be in a perpetual state of chaos (increasingly more so over the past 2 years) you'll find a lot more enjoyment. They probably had like 2 or 3 people working on this which is pretty impressive even if the content itself isn't overly exciting.

I mean, Anet stated back in February 3rd, just after episode 2 came out, that they were planning to do this. And that wasn't presented as a recent decision either. So we are looking at around late last year they had the idea for this.

  • This seems like living world season 1 again.

  • For me this "content" was worse than nothing.
I had no fun at all, the fights took soooo long, whyy???

The other random player in my team in one of the 3 missions said: "Never again"

    This was worse than nothing.
Fix old problems of the game instead of producing this kind of content.

And I know they are working on the new expansion.
But this should have been out in 2019 already.

    Where is Guild Wars 3????

Felt like playing some Living Story 1 parts, the bad ones tho.
A huge step back, but I didn't have any expectations.

Maybe! But I highly doubt this was planned as early as late last year given how soon that was after the Icebrood announcement when they insisted fairly vehemently that there was no expansion in the works.

And given the random fractal addition in the same time slot as a would be episode, after over a year of not touching fractals, it feels a bit out of place. Especially as the fractal itself wasn't actually originally designed to revolve around Cantha and was redesigned after the fact with no direct correlation to the current plot.

I'm also giving them the benefit of a doubt that they didn't just hype up Visions of the Past, (an actually really good story delivery method) only to have one iteration of it and then switch to a completely different format of story telling because they just... wanted to capture the essence of Season 1. Strike missions had a fair chance and I never really saw the appeal but they were significantly more engaging than this 5 man/solo instance dps golemn Response Mission content.

But yes, I suppose completely changing the format and not iterating on an existing system in favor of creating something new is par for the course for Arenanet.

I'm not really invested either way and am fine logging in every 2 months or so to check out the story progression so it doesn't really matter to me. Just had the feeling that little of this has been highly mapped out and wouldn't be at all surprised if that February announcement was before work/planning had even been done for this part of the Saga, or surprised if even with Season 1 in mind they still had a different idea for these releases and had to cut back even further. Who knows. It's just another 6 months anyway.

  • For me, this is the worst part of story in many years in GW2.

Three unnecessarily long dungeons with boring and uninteresting mechanics, similar to each other.
Public content in personal story (lol wat?)
Inability to create a 5man group in lfg in the desired section, because there is an opportunity only for squads.
    15 even more boring cms.
Grind this pointless content in order to get a weapon, to get mastery. Look so cool.
One hour in Dragonfall meta everyday for daily? Are you kidding?

Today I will finish my achievements there and will not return to these "dungeons". Never.
Thanks for the "interesting" new content that I don't even want to see in the future.

You haven't even made any new mechanics for the Primordus minions. You just took meteors from 100cm and copypaste it in gendarran dungeon. Oh wow, you did sooo hard work!

Okay, you are working on expansion now. But expansion will appear in next year. We will play this aught for another year, because you are too busy working on Cantha? Unpleasant perspective.

After had done the mission yesterday, i'm pleased to see that the mission can be different between each. (a little).
The azura support in metrica is really a good support.

Edit: Don't mind, didn't see that we can choose the support.

About the Dragon Boon, it's a passive advantage if i understand well ? because i didn't see something about it.

Why are we left wondering in the wind about what the goal is for champions? Why are we left guessing what that global goal is, its not not explained to us in game mechanics-wise? We are all confused about if more content is coming soon...or not....

Overall I enjoyed the instances and the banter, the loot is meh, will be catching up on the episodes since we have VO but the story is confusing, the global goal is confusing I'm just CONFUSED and it spoils the fun some.

  • Working on an expansion isn't an excuse for such low effort content release. It feels like we start seeing that ANet notices our feedback, we think everything is going to get better from now on and then they drop this. With that being said, I am unsatisfied but on the other hand it was for free, so hey, who am I to judge.

  • Vancho.8750Vancho.8750 Member ✭✭✭✭

To add to everything said by now, the side stories content somehow is more engaging then DRMs, the Awaikened invasions, the Bandit bounties and the Mist Rifts are somehow way better in comparison the only major difference is that DRMs have voice acting. DRMs ARE dungeons, not Arrah but those tank and spank paths, Arenanet picked the design by statistic, cause those were played the most(people farmed them not because they are fun, but because GPH).

  • I like the idea. It is like visions of the past but clearly this chapter lacks mechanical complexity, for some time they seemed to have found effective formulas instantiated missions (attack missions) allowing a higher content than the LS community but without being so hardcore and exclusive.

I "like" the story but the execution.... the copy paste of mechanicals, only putting waves of npc not giving any tactical strategy or level of difficulty is ridiculous, I understand that they will be focused on the expansion a while ago, but the level of the chapter is so so low. And I do not know if it is the problem of the game designers or some higher position but those who make the decision seem not to play the game.

  • It sucked. Felt like extremely lazy programming. Copy/paste pretty much the same mission a few times on maps that were already premade with the same predictable story line for each. And then give the boss champ a bazillion health. Took me forever to kill the champs cause I did it all solo. About 75% of my time was spent doing just that. All other enemies scaled just fine though. Overall, bleh.

As far as the story of the entire thing... it was okay but it's way too obvious what's going to happen in the long run. Assuming it's going to continue with the current direction. Jormag wants to "help Tyria" by getting rid of Primordus. The debate is 50/50 on if it's a good idea to ally with Jormag or not. Which ultimately causes conflict between everyone and that's what Jormag really wants (yet no one seems smart enough to figure that out). This then pits everyone against each other. And if we do kill Primordus, then Jormag doesn't have to worry about the only known weakness used against him/her/whatever too (another thing the npc's seem to not even notice). Personally, I think it's really dumb also to have Jormag's Champ with us during these fights cause Jormag then can see what weaknesses we have.

    TLDR: BLEH

    Do a barrel roll

the whole concept of this update seemed bad to start with, and sadly it turned out as expected. also the story itself is actually kinda maddening, the whole thing with where everyone is just okay with jormag now (even though we spent all of bjora learning about how manipulative they are) is soo stupid and actually makes it impossible to immerse myself in the story

atleast the voice acting in drizzlewood is cool i guess

I can't give a final evaluation yet, as I quit halfway through the episode, uhm sorry, chapter last night out of sheer boredom. I am going to play the squad story mission next and will leave my final verdict once I have finished the whole chapter.

Those response missions sound awfully boring, too... I'm glad they are connected to a community-wide event week and contain a few rewards to make them at least somewhat appealing to play.

I did Gendarren yesterday with a party of 5 using my spellbreaker in soldiers gear. If my naff dps/high cc can get through it, even if the 4 others were likely better dps than me, then it's not anywhere near raid level.

I'm not defending the overpowered health pool (before the patch - I haven't tried yest as I've seen no groups yet), but I disagree that we are talking raid level here.

I have to admit I was not terribly impressed by this chapter. It feels kind of unfinished. I can understand wanting to add more content in the coming chapters but too much was left unexplained. One of the achievements is to buy vigil supply boxes at eye of the north. but there is no vendor. I assume it will be added later? but there is no explanation. You can't get enough masteries for the new line. I assume that will be added later? but there is no explanation. You can't do the currently last part of the story and we assume it will be added later in some way. But there is no explanation that this is the case. I get that they were going for an gradually unfolding episode but not giving us a bit of information on whether something is upcoming or just plain overlooked and missing makes it feel, well, very underwhelming.

The CMs are not difficult and the timer is fairly forgiving. It’s just very boring.

  • I think the story hasn't really started yet, I am expecting a big bang at the end before we have the new expansion or have a real "living story" experience again like Lion's arch. Because the sea has been cut off, so there really is need something to break it and open up a passage. Thinking Primordus will burn it or something as it puffs it last breath.

I am happy to see there's a selection to a different "version" of the same map, I hope this is a sign that we can use that same function to go into pve map for wvw.

I was short on mastery points as I never do/did the ballerina stuff mp achieves ( stand here while not touching that within etc etc ).

I did LS3 and LS4 on all my 3 accounts, LS5 only one one, and I will skip this episode on that one too.

I've only played the intro so far and will play more tonight by diving into the first DRM.

My first impressions are; the dialogue and character works seems pretty great. So far it's the highlight. The first story instance in Rata Sum frustrated me because I kept dying, and would respawn at the lab and have to run through the whole environment to get back to the enemies. So it was frustrating for my squishy sb to die repeatedly, but okay I can accept that. But the trek back to the enemies made it even worse.

Otherwise I am liking the story aspect, even if I am confused why it seems the incentive to not kill another elder dragon (i.e. avoiding the apocalypse) is being seemingly handwaved.

The community event is almost certainly just the bonus rewards. the episode and content will be fully replayable - it's more a case of if people will actually want to. I assume there will be more things to buy as time progresses to incentivise

Soloed the Metrica mission on a half baked condi druid. Took 25 mins, no death. Most of that time spent on the "boss" a glorified punching bag, with extra filling. Didn't notice any particular reward. Dialogue in that one was Okayish. Haven't done story. I was expecting having to meet up with the various races and factions around the world and do some special missions, then select them as allies for the dragon missions. But I did a mission without even having started the story, and was given Sylvari allies. I dont understand the point ? I was looking forward to working more with the other races and pick who accompanies me

Yeah I'm sure some classes have it easier. It's also misleading as you think it starts after boss but it's any shockwave so as reaper i was rounding up mobs and got k/d towards a shockwave so was aggravated. I would have to 100 percent pay attention and pull off alot of dps at points to get it. It's more I don't even want to do those again on CM maybe I guess.

    Pretty poor stuff.

I know they are going to be expanding this in the upcoming weeks but the initial release should have had more especially as it's been four months since the last LS release. At the moment there's very little worth playing here and not that much to be excited about. Maybe the next few weeks will turn it around and it'll become a decent episode but I'm not that hopeful.

No new map, as expected. A brief story with three repeatable but otherwise pretty standard missions with a defense section, an escort or wave defense section and a boss section with a boss that is still a HP sponge in both solo and party mode. A bunch of locked off masteries, presumably those will unlock in the upcoming weeks otherwise why have them there at all yet, they're hardly all that exciting. Two more weapon sets, the Volcanic Stormcaller weapons that, apparently, are rare drops and the Dragon Slayer weapons that cry out "we will have a sparklier version in the future!"

They didn't even include a meta achievement but that will probably change once there's enough content.

    From https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/releases/november-17-2020/
Join other players to train and equip the Order of the Crystal Bloom during the first global faction mobilization event. You’ll earn rewards for your efforts, and faction members can join your Dragon Response Missions to bolster your defenses and healing. Word is sure to spread, so be alert for other factions ready to join the cause.

Disappointing that this means do the dragon missions regardless of whether the Crystal Bloom are there or not, do an LS4 meta and donate materials while a progress bar updates in the top right of the screen. Disappointing that the rewards are yet more bags of crafting materials and the same banners and other dull bric-a-brac we got from so many other "Bonus events".

I do like the idea of choosing a faction to accompany you but at the moment it would be more accurate to say "You’ll earn rewards for your efforts, and faction members can join your Dragon Response Missions to repeatedly die to the destroyer's AoE."

    Very underwhelming.

Not hard. I thought lare likes challenge.

not everywhere .. raid content mostly skipped from me.

Just go 250kp like fractal CM.

It was 250, we ask 50, but most people link very more.

Did you try after patch or before?

    yesterday

Just did all 3. No reqs in lfg. Wasn't super easy or fun especially the harpy or bridge one. I mean 5 sec kds with little tell in bridge and the tornados and kds in harpy. GL w that shooting star nonsense unless you hide and hope your team carries you. I had it kd by something and then shockwave tapped me. Can't really seeing me do those 3 times each as its only 20 instead or 5-7 of the medals and loot seemed the same. maybe after all the extra loot masteries I'll try again

I'm struggling to find groups so far for CM to do multiple times for the other achievement though

For now, ppl put lfg in "central tyria"

    Ah I'll check there. Thanks

They have way to much health.. And lets not talk about Anets love for knockdown.... But for the love of god lower the health, its annoying as kitten these health sponges..

If you jump at the right time you can avoid the destroyers that look like the first boss+boss in metrica and you can avoid the brisban crab as well or just move abit to the side out of the bridge and aoe dont go that far.

I dont know, I didn't find the AoE even challenging to dodge, but the fight was Boooooriiiiing. They take too long to die for such a repetitive and simple pattern. I think a lot of mobs that arent even bosses are far more interesting to fight and dont last as long. Awakened in particular. This boss had two moves : Hit hard and AoE fire barrage.

Obviously soloing's gonna make it longer, but even with a team of 5, all you do is shave the HP faster. Those fights are anything but interesting. The only redeeming quality of these mission are the allies, and I'm still in the dark as to which factions are meant to be available beside the default ones.

so far seems like a prolog to the actual chapters coming inthe future. I think this episode would have been better titled as another prolog to the fire dragon. So far its not worthy of being titled a chapter imo.... That said it was short cause its split over some weeks im guessing which i dont mind cause im playing other games along side gw2 atm. So i didnt have a need to hard grind for several hours on masteries or achievements etc etc.

The mission bosses could have a 33% reduction in their health pools as the fights drag on a bit to long in pug groups and this is coming from some one with raid exp, gear, etc. The fights last too long without any real heavy mechanics behind them. Especially the 2nd and 3rd missions
The first missions usually clears a bit quicker from my exp so far. The 2nd mission takes AGES to complete in the final fight it just drags on for way to long where you are just basically slapping a dps golem. The 3rd mission at least has you move around a bit but the fight could end quicker imo.
Another thing that could be done is to remove the timer at the start of each mission once all 3 moral boost goals are reached there really seems to be no point in having to wait the extra 2 or some times 3 mins once all the goals are done.

The amount of time it takes to complete these fights is a bit to long for me when thinking about long term replay value.... The missions either need to be more like the old dungeons were at minimum or they just need to be out right shorter. You can do most strikes bosses faster than you can do these mission bosses and thats not a good thing because the strike missions have more appeal to them in replay value than the missions do at least right now.
I feel like the missions as they are with no additional substance after the first play through should be able to be done in like 5-10 mins max not 15-20 mins or more.

To be clear i was not expecting anything super amazing or hard from this chapter i was more interested in character dialog than game play this time around which was good enough to pass in my book seeing all the interesting interactions.

I do like the use of old maps and I dont feel like every update needs a new map its always good to see new content and story rolling back through old maps. The bad part is that this content instanced which i get so people can always play it or go back and play it however that makes the impact of it weaker than what it could have been overall.

im not like upset about the update but its not something that kept me hyped after the first play through. That said for a first time play through it was decently enjoyable from a story advancement perspective. Game play wise nothing new.

hmmm I have mixed feelings about this.
overall I enjoyed it, and I like we'll see more as soon as a week from now.
the dialogue was nice, and I appreciate the story moving forward.
The part of rata sum was nice.
for the dragon misions, even though I did have fun, and they're finally doing what I've been wanting for a long time (taking parts of existing maps to create new instanced content) to be honest it looks like they were all done in an afternoon. seriously.
well the dialogue in them is very nice, it's just a preset map, with a very random final boss, that doesn't look or feel special at all, and doesn't have much of a strategy. at least it has some strategy but could have been done with less HP and better attacks IMO.
still, it was fun. and I hope the next thing coming wil be entertaining too. I wonder what's this about a wekly progress now, since they told us that it would be 1 chapter every 2 months.

It's still one chapter every 2 months, but they said every chapter would be built on between chapters as well. Which likely means more missions - potentially at the three locations Taimi shows us on the map like The Flame Citadel. They are adapting a similar approach to LS1 where they took an episode and 2 weeks later added to it. So whatever we get in a chapter, we will then get additions to it in stages after that

I'm uncertain how I feel about it at this stage. It feels a little jarring with the Icebrood Saga which only just felt it was getting started and now we've moved onto an additional Dragon and a completely different structure. But, if they can improve on this initial and rather shaky implementation, it could work out. They need to sort the lfg issue out, add in some actual variety, mechanics and decent rewards

I wonder though. if this is an episode split into 4 chapters, what are these weekly updates?
so we have a story (living world) divided into seasons (season 5 icebrood saga) divided into episodes (episode 5: champions) divided into chapters (truce) and divided into what now? paragraphs? XD

Just wait til we get Season 5. episode 5, Chapter 2, Paragraph 3, Sub section 4

Why do y'all got to make me exhale beverages from my nose? XD I have to admit, though, that sounds pretty legit.

  • I like how the story is going on and idea of using old maps and being able to train the factions. Dragon Response Missions could be better, the interactions are time gating and mobs feel repetitive. I would like it if they are made more engaging. For example, in the group of destroyers that spawn one destroyer is OP that we need to kill it else we wipe. The enemies should be more randomized in my opinion. When I heard about Dragon Slayer Mastery I was excited, but seeing how this mastery is implemented seems like a waste.
Overall I enjoyed the story elements and the faction elements. Dragon Response Missions needs more tweaking and balancing. The mastery name should be changed, the mastery does not justify the name.

They are terribly boring and uninspired compared to Strikes, which is a lot better integrated into the game.
