How to use Compendium of Masteries?

To use the Compendium do you have to have a corresponding mastery track active? If not, how do you use it?

Just double click it, choose the mastery type you want (tyria, HoT, PoF etc.), and it'll give you that item. It autoconsumes or you double click that one as well.

And yes, select a mastery to train before using it. If you want HoT masteries, select one mastery from HoT, then when you use that item it'll give you XP for that mastery track.

I did read the wiki page; it's always my first stop when I have questions. A wider web search didn't give me an answer either, but you did. Thanks.
