There's a CSS/html bug floating (ahem) around that causes the signature block to overwrite the edit field, creating the symptoms you're suffering. I haven't seen word that this has been fixed yet. When one of our fellow posters figured out the CSS issue, they suggested removing one's signature as a work-around. Turns out hiding has the same effect. I noticed with a posts before that I couldn't highlight the text of the post because it would highlight the signature instead. Didn't make the connection between the two.
