Important Tips for New Players

Hello, I had a guild dedicated to introducing new players to the game for some months and I decided to collect and aswer to the most common questions that a new player usually asks. This tips are mainly for players who are still leveling their first character, but some of them might be useful for the ones who are already 80.

Character creation

Races make no difference between classes. Feel free to choose whatever race you like.If you created a ranger, choose any pet you like. You will get all of them later in game anyway.Story aspects will influence just a small part of your Story Quest, so create your story and your character as you like.Take your time! Sometimes, Guild Wars 2 is a beauty competition.

Skills

Skills from 1-5 are Weapon Skills. You cannot change them. They change when you equip another type of weapon. Note!: Same weapon bring different skills for each class. A warrior with a sword will not have the same weapon skills as a ranger with a sword.Skill 6: Healing skill. Yes, every class has a healing skill. Each class has it's own healing skills.Skills from 7-9 are Utility Skills. Each class has it's own utility skills. You can have 3 at a time and you can swap them when you are out of combatSkill 0 is the Elite Skill. Each class got it's own elite skills. Elite skill is ususally a strong skill with a bigger cooldown, like an ultimate.

Quests?

No, there is no questing system. The best way of leveling for a new player is to explore the map.To complete a map you have to discover all Points of interest, Vistas, Waypoints and to complete all tasks and challenges.<> Points of interest ~ Locations on the map that needs discovered. Events usually happens around POIs<> Vistas ~ High grounds that will show you parts of the map (I strongly recommand you to admire the view)<> Hearts ~ A list of tasks you can complete. When the heart is full, the NPC will become a Karma Vendor<> Waypoints ~ Used for fast travel. You can teleport to them.<> Skill challenges ~ Most of them are fights or commutes with places of power. Awards skill points (used to discover skills and talents)World events ~ events that spawn around the world. Reward the players with EXP and Karma

Main Currency and special currencies

As main currency, Guild Wars 2 use coins system. There are 3 types of coins: Copper, Silver and Gold. You can see your coins in your inventory(bottom)<> 1 silver coins = 100 copper coins<> 1 gold coin = 100 silver coinsOther important currencies are Karma and Gems<> Gems can be purchased with real money($$) or with gold. Gems are used to buy skins or bonuses from Black Lion Trading Company (press O).Important The items bought with gems does not affect gameplay and does not make a player stronger.<> Karma: Obtained by doing world events. Can be used at Heart Vendors or at lvl 80 for different materials.

Crafting

You can level all crafting professions and change for free between them.Changing a crafting profesion does not delete the progress ; The progress is saved for each one of themIt is recommanded to level the crafting profession that will help you craft the armor set for you, as it follows:<> Warrior, Guard, Revenant ~ Armorsmith<> Ranger, Engineer, Thief ~ Leatherworking<> Elementalist, Mesmer, Necromancer ~ TailoringIt is recommanded to level your crafting professions using online guides, to make sure you don't spend too much money. Online guides ussually presents you the cheapest way. I recommand gw2crafts, they have good guides.

Dungeons

Each dungeon has a Story Path and multiple Explorable Paths.Story path can be doned by players under 80 too. When you have the necessary level to complete a dungeon story mode, you will recive a mail in your Inbox.Explorable paths are harder and are 5 levels higher than the Story path.<> Ascalonian Catacombs ~ level 30 for Story ; 35 for Explorable<> Caudecus's Manor ~ level 40 for Story ; 45 for Explorable<> Twilight Arbor ~ level 50 for Story ; 55 for Explorable ; 80 for the special Aetherblade path<> Sorrow's Embrace ~level 60 for Story ; 65 for Explorable<> Citadel of Flame ~ level 70 for Story ; 75 for Explorable<> Honor of the Waves ~ level 76 for Story ; 80 for Explorable<> Crucible of Eternity ~ level 78 for Story ; 80 for Explorable<> Ruined City of Arah ~ level 80 for both Story and Explorable ; completing the Story path is a part of the Personal Story Quest too

Materials

It is recommanded to salvage the dropped equipment instead of selling it.Salvage kits can be bought from Merchants (coins symbol on minimap). After you salvage a piece of equipment you will get some materials (wood, cloth etc.) depending on what you salvaged and luck. Luck can be consumed to get Magic Find.Materials can be stored by accesing your Inventory > Settings(the gear symbol) > Deposit All Materials.Material Deposit can be seen at bank (second tab). Banks are found in the Main Cities.

Some more tips

Bank and Materials Deposit are Account Bound. All characters share the same banks. You can use bank to transfer items between characters. Most items(including equipment) are Account Bound, which means that you can deposit equipment into the bank and then take it on another character.Wallet (currencies) is Acount Bound. All characters share the same Gold, Karma etc. Each player has an Account Name. Most listings (guild bank history, etc.) are using the account name of the player, not the characters name.

Explorable might be harder, but level 80 is definitely not a requirement.

If you're still feeling confused, there's more that may assist here: https://en-forum.guildwars2.com/discussion/784/helpful-starter-tips-for-new-players/p1

If you want, you can add one more random tipp or I don't know what label would be good for this, maybe Quests?/Leveling:You can start your leveling up on any races starting map, so even if you made a Charr, you still can teleport to the Norn beginning map, and level there if you like that environment more. The starting maps are:<> Human: Queensdale<> Norn: Wayfarer Foothills<> Sylvari: Caledon Forest<> Charr: Plains of Ashford<> Asura: Metrica Province
