So is there any plan by anet to fix this? Theres certainly enough information documented in this thread alone to find the issue.

I can't speak for them directly, but I've been working with some of our programmers and sharing the info we've gotten from your tickets with them. Unfortunately, though, the last I heard was that we were still having trouble reproducing the issue reliably, or at least with nailing down the precise cause.

It might not be the answer you're looking for, but rest assured we are aware and we have teams trying to work out a solution. This one's just proving to be difficult.

I have a system where the infinite flashing issue happens from time to time. I'm guessing it's the same issue this thread is based one. It has been a long time since i've encountered that though. Admittedly pretty much never.
Back then, I had to circumvent a broken mouse so I avoided clicking as much as possible, even on minimizing and returning to gw2. I noticed that I didn't have the issue if I properly used alt tab (keyboard only) to cycle through my programs to give gw2 the focus and make it the active window. BUT, I did get the flashing issue from time to time if I used the mouse.
All of the above on Fullscreen (not windowed) on a different resolution than my desktop's.

What I've noticed before the Windows update is that, when the game was loading a new zone, it froze for a moment for me. It wasn't long enough for Windows to say that the program is not responding. After the Windows update, the game alt-tabbing seems to happen at roughly this time as well. Maybe this was said before, but 9 pages of long posts is a bit too much. ^^
Additionally, for me the game doesn't really tab down. It's more like it went to windowed and go reduced to only the top name area of the window and the X button in the corner and is moved to the upper-left corner.

    Praise Joko!

I changed the resolution to borderless fullscreen and that fixed it for me, give it a go, might help you out.

Just adding my account to the list. And.. Not sure its an ArenaNet problem. It only started after I received the current Windows 10 update, weeks after this thread initially reported it. I played full-screen mode on both my laptop and my main PC. They received the update on different days. The machine that received the update last, did not have the behavior described until it also installed the Windows update.

Also, as the poster above noted, the automated Alt+Tab minimizing of the screen, and the restoring it, seemed to happened only when changing zones, not when I would port within a zone. Changing to Windowed Fullscreen stopped the behavior.

starting sometime this or maybe last week, this has been occuring to me as well.
What happens is: you map travel to any location, the loading screen works, and between the loading screen, and loading the area, the game 'minimizes' for 1-2 seconds.
But for me it happens almost consistently everytime I waypoint.

To defeat the dragons, see the good in them.
Zhaitan reunites lost ones, primordus creates fertile land, mordremoth spreads the green, and jormag..
    ..jormag? Who's that?

  • Hm the flashing of the windows desktop I have since I play Gilde Wars 2 it is just so the client become for a 0.5s transparent before going into the loading screen.
I had another problem with the game minimizing and no loading screen until the new region is loaded with the 1803 creative win 10 update.

Source of this problem is the 1803 update did kicked out some moduls from NVIDIA , the update had problem with other driver as well(needed to reinstall them) I did install this update on multiple PC but this is not all. The hard part is a simple over installation won't fix it because Microsoft changed how stuff is loaded in the boot process. Mainly the msconfig.exe is no longer in charge of it but it is a part of the task manger now and this thing has much less options while changing this they kicked a lot of stuff out as part of a new optimization process for the boot up and login screen.

So you have to deinstall the whole driver installation with all the tools , reboot , clean up with something like ccleaner , reinstall it, reboot and maybe reboot again until you have the NVIDIA center and the info tryicon after the reboot.( It took me 2 reboots because of the boot optimization I believe ).

This solved my problems with it.

Changing it to borderless fullscreen also fixed the issue for me, but I don't want to have to play like that. Prefer native fullscreen.

I may not be what you want, baby, but I am most certainly what you need.

Count me among the wretched. Win10 Update hit my machine earlier this week. sigh
I just came back to the game a few weeks ago so really hoping this gets figured out sooner than later.
My task manager now shows multiple "instances" of gw2 running parallel (same numbers). No idea what's causing this.
Windowed mode made my load times much worse so I followed the directions provided by Sky.8035 (tyvm for posting) and that has made the game somewhat playable in full screen mode, but I'm limping along compared to last week.

My GW2 is showing multiple instances when it didn't before the bug hit.

It's also slowing in spurts to 1-5fps - and then zooming back to 20+ then 50+, then back down....

The game is in serious trouble right now.

I was asked to run an app called GameAdvisor and submit the results -- I did just that but In my email I requested that CS or at least @GM Magister.8736 confirm when he had received my GameAdvisor files because the CS team were giving other people the run around by saying they never received it

That email was sent on the 23rd and there has been silence ever since. I log back in to check on my ticket to find that its been closed....

    Well played Magister.

I didnt see my ticket going very far anyway so I dont feel that i've been let down. Im just disappointed that CS is that bad when it comes to responding to people.

Either you received the attachments or you didnt or it was just a show to calm the masses that were getting wound up by not getting any response, Who knows...

    Thanks anyway.

I have several tickets that were never answered - one is about this issue. I have screenshots to prove it. I suggest anyone use snipit when doing
any ticket on any website - 'proving' that we are not lying seems to be a thing now. I would never lie about something so important to the
health of a business or entity. Why would anyone?

CS's do ask for tests, one sends them back but we never hear back from them again - unless we follow up and then they ask
for the same test saying they never received it or they are 'working on it' and we, again, never hear back. I've sent in a few... not
one was ever answered with 'ah, here's the problem' but they do ask for more and more tests or the same tests, more than once.

This one issue, the screen flashing, is a prime example of ticketing being 'lost' or just never responded to in the first place.

I haven't read all the posts, but I thought I could post how I solved it:

disable focus assist after the last win 10 update

Just type "focus assist" in the win10 search box to bring up the config screen and read carefully all settings, as far as I remember I changed my settings to disable focus assist while running games.

So, we recently uncovered the reason for this. Our support site host seems to have changed how it handles "suspicious" attachments without notifying us, which has lead to some messages including perfectly safe attachments going missing. This doesn't always happen, but when it does we will not see your reply in the ticket thread we are working with you on, which is just as annoying to us as it is to you.

We're working with them to get it corrected. But, for now, if you submit something with an attachment and don't receive a reply for some time: Please do not give up hope or assume we are ignoring you! Send a gentle reminder/followup to see if we received your attachment, and we can usually dig through the site's records and find what was sent. :)

That's not us closing your ticket, but the system shutting it down due to perceived "inactivity," so I apologize. If you sent another response after the one which had the attachments, it looks like that one might have gotten blocked by the malware filter, too. Just an FYI: NCSoft Customer Service has nothing to do with Guild Wars (1 or 2).

  • The easiest way to get rid of this on Windows 10 Pro is to remove the 1803 update. You do this by going to All Settings / Update and Security / Recovery and choose the option to remove the update. This actually takes very little time. It also works under regular Windows 10, but more then likely the next time it checks for updates it will just reinstall it.

Not one of my tickets has been answered in weeks.

I have the screenshots... Your people don't want to hear it.

I have no 'malware' scanner - Windows 10 is doing what was intended to do.

If you want to see the proof of the tickets put in but not answered, please email any of us who are reporting not getting answers or even a
    confirmation email at all.

If no confirmation email is ever received, there is a serious issue with the ticketing system on the server side.

When I go to login to the 'support' part of this website, I am not allowed to login.

I can login to the forums, but I can't properly login to put in a ticket.

So, again, many of us have put in tickets that are not only not getting answers, we aren't even getting confirmation emails as we have
    in the past.

I thought I had the problem fixed.

I reverted the driver for my GTX970 to 2016 and as long as I didn't reboot, no flash to desktop and no icon at the top left of the monitor.

BUT, rebooting destroyed whatever good change was allowing the 'change map' screen to appear (which it was not doing before).

What did help was going to full screen windowed mode.

Not my fav, but at least the flashing to screen is gone until they can come up with a real fix.

Might not work for everyone, but it's worth a shot.

Reverting to the 2016 driver also helped ( a bit )with frame rates that are still going all over the place.

Back on May 15 I submitted a ticket on this issue. I got a response with a case number and a request to install the Game Adviser app, run it and send the results in to Support, which I did.

On May 31, I got an email stating, "Before we can look into your request, we need you to contact us through the Guild Wars 2 Support Site. Please fill in as much of the information on the form as you can. An agent will reply to your ticket as soon as they are able. The more information you provide, the faster an agent will be able to help you."

Well, this is exactly what I did over two weeks before that and how I got the process and communication started to begin with. I replied telling them this, noting the case number, and re-sent the Game Adviser results file as well.

Is this usual? Does the left hand know what the right hand is doing? How many times are you expected to submit a ticket on the same issue?

To all those who have had bad support experiences, especially on this issue: I cannot speak to why you are having the issues, all I can do is to outline my experience and my ticket history. I, like many, many others started getting the "flash to desktop" problem after the W10 1803 update. I submitted a ticket through the support site (if you are having trouble logging in to the support site, I'd suggest maybe an in game ticket, or a DM or post to Gaile Gray might be worthwhile). The initial response to my ticket took 11 calendar days, a little bit longer than average these days, but not outrageous. The first response was a request for log files, and the instructions for creating them.

Since the initial response, the next response was an acknowledgement that my log files were received, and that the issue was being worked on. Subsequent to that, I've had several responses to my ticket. Each had some suggestions to try, and an acknowledgement that support was aware of the issue, that it was proving hard to consistently replicate, but that they were working on it. If and when I've had environment changes (driver updates, various config setting changes, etc.), I update here in the forum and also on my ticket.

I don't know whether my experience is normal or exceptional, but clearly, the message has gotten through to support, and they have indicated that they are working on it. It makes no sense to me that support would be stalling people off by claiming that files were not received, or lack of response to tickets. Why would they want to have a bunch of unhappy players because of this very annoying issue? I get that it is extremely frustrating to have an issue and have it seem as though no one was listening...but from what I've seen, support has been working on the issue, and has explained a potential issue with why file attachments are not getting through. Lead GM Magister.8736 has been weighing in here with updates. Bashing support doesn't seem to be a great way to go to me. I'm willing to take them at their word and wait for a solution.

It's a common issue for users with the 1803 update.

I believe it is a combination of OS, game and computer configuration.

It started with a Windows 10 update but there was also a game update around that same time (with a month).

If it was 'all' one video card or one set of parameters, yes, duplication would be easy. As it is, no, we're all running different software on our
various hardware/software configurations and that's not even touching the settings in each of those programs and the OS.

I was forced to go into windowed mode - not comfortable. but at the very least the flashing isn't happening when I am in WvW, the
place where map changes can make a difference in scoring when an Emergency Waypoint is posted.

Too bad anet doesn't have a live customer service that can guest into computers, securely (which can be monitored and logged and SAFE) to
really figure out this or any other really hard to pin down glitch that affects anyone who is having a glitch that just can't be 'fixed'
    on 'our side'.

  • Hello there,

just installed the latest Win 10 update and tadaaa... now my c.o.m.p.u.t.o.r. (yepyepyepyepyep) is threatening me too while im playing GW2. Loading Screens will put me to the desktop and after GW2 finished loading the precious data it puts me back into the game. Very annoying. I feel my gaming experience goes down the drain. Happy life will significantly change too a devastated wasterland... please give us a solution to be happy again.

jumps in the way of a very big 10 tons slow rolling wooden barrel, laughing... enjoying

    ^(°-°)^

    With best regards
    The unhappy Desktop Skritt

    nothing to see here anymore

  • Windows 10 : Version 1803 : Build 17134.48
    Radeon HD7880

Load GW2.exe = Kicked to desktop during loading the game but then (after a longer than normal period) allowed to select a character.
Select a character = loading screen then kicked back to desktop with a 10% chance the load will finish and im put ingame (although very laggy for a while) but 90% chance the game just vanishes.. no crash, no report just disappears.. as if i never clicked on it in the first place..

MSI Afterburner = no bottlenecks or overheats
Windows Update = No available updates
    GW2 = No available updates
GPU Driver = No available updates
    Notifications = ALL off
Ingame settings = Tried editing various settings, window/full/low settings etc.. makes no change

Unsure if related, but if i select a character that's not in LA, i do have an increased chance the game will finish to load and let me in.. but not without a annoying desktop trip during character load and map load...

Is there a thread for Windows 7 users NOT using Nvidia that can't even launch the game to try any of the suggested troubleshooting steps in this thread? After logging in on the launcher and pressing 'Play' there is about a second delay before the desktop flashes about 12 times with a hand icon as the cursor and then nothing, the launcher just disappears and my comp acts like I had never even tried to launch the game. No error messages, nothing.

UPDATE - game is now unplayable.. the 10% times it does actually load.. allows you to play for 2-10mins then auto kick out.. no error, no crash.. nothing...
unsure if it will help others, but - removing all addons like filters n dps meters did make it better.. but was short lived for myself and many others..
    Game is UNPLAYABLE.

More and more people are going to be getting update 1803 every day. Gw2 might need some core engine tune ups if it wants to survive the next few years.

Shield of Wrath: Reduced the cooldown of this skill from 36 seconds to 35 seconds.

    Quality balance changes^TM

There ain't gonna be a fix anytime soon Cuz this isn't a gw2 specific problem. It has to do with the windows update that be messing with the game. Especially the focus Assist option stealing focus from the game itself.

    Hello there,
Same problem, and yesterday, I have done the update of windows 1803...
I have disabled Focus Assist : it helps a little !

  • Hey folks!

We've been chatting with the group that hosts our support site, and they confirmed that a patch they released may have caused some attachments to get blocked or filtered improperly. They did say, however, that this issue should have been resolved by a subsequent update which came out at the later end of last week.

If you submitted an attachment previously and had it go missing, can you try again and let me know the ticket number where you sent it so I can make sure it came through? Or, if you've already sent your attachment over the weekend or this morning and are waiting on a reply, do the same and I'll see that it came through.

We might still have a few that are sorting incorrectly, but hopefully if we get some examples from you guys we can figure out why that's happening!

  • This is occurring with every change/loading screen: logging in, changing zones, using way points, and alt-tabbing. And it even takes a while to load...
Could a fix be made please?

  • Very annoying. As i dont want to roll back to the previous win update, i just do the daily achievs and dont play the game further than that. Dektopblinking is stressing poor lil skritt.

UPDATE 06-05-2018: 06-05 GW2 patch, no effect on flash to desktop...it's still there. I didn't really expect any change since it was not mentioned in the release notes...just an informational posting.

  • Been having the same thing - Changed my desktop to a loading screen, doesn't seem so jarring now :)

Same happening to me. I'm getting lots of lag with it. Or at least the game is hanging up. Was kicked out to black screen a few times while doing fractal runs. I installed 1803 update on 5/6 and a cumulative update on 5/29. Didn't notice anything different with game until yesterday. Everything running fine and then it progressively started slowing down and kicking me. Hoping for fix soon.
I recently installed Avast. That's the only change to my system.

  • The load times and lag are prohibitive. Popular maps, especially PoF, and combat in WvW are not playable for me.
I'm a returning player who pretty much bought the farm at this point.
    much sad, very sigh

  • The game's turning unplayable. At first I only got alt+tabbing behavior during loadings, but the longer I keep my PC on the worse it gets. Now I can't play pvp, because at least once per pvp match, it will just alt+tab in the middle of the game (not during loading) and screw me and my team over in the middle of the fight.

Alright, so I've discovered how to severely decrease the time it flashes your desktop before popping back into the game.

    1. Open up your Notification Menu located on your task bar on the bottom right side.
    2. Press the All Settings button.
    3. Select System
    4. Select Focus Assist on the left hand tab
    5. Turn off the 'When I'm playing a game' option

This should decrease the minimize time from about 5 seconds to around 1 second.

To take this a step further, another thing that will help, especially if you're running on an older PC.

Repeat Previous Steps 1 & 2, then do the following:

    1. In the All Settings menu select Gaming.
    2. Turn off Game Bar.

It appears that Focus Assist and the Game Bar are the primary culprits behind this whole thing. As far as why it still minimizes for a second... That appears to be a fix on Arenanet's end as it seems like a compatibility issue.

Disabling these two setting removed the issue for my antique machine (AMD Phenom II X4 3.2 GHz, AMD Radeon HD 6850). Thank you so much!
