Have not played in years, overwhelmed with new content

Just came back to the game after ~2-3 years with a shiny new gaming pc. Last major thing I remember happening was Lion's Arch getting invaded and everything going to shit. Now there's two new expansions, a new class and new ability trees. So I'm not missing out I've got a few questions:

  • How do I participate in Season 4? I don't even have the Crystal Desert area unlocked.
  • Do I have to start Path of Fire first?
  • Do I require a party to progress to Season 4?

My main is a level 80 Ele with Exotic Berserker gear so I should be good as far as gear goes.

You're correct that your gear is still good to go. As you might remember there is a tier above exotic, called ascended which has slightly better stats, but you don't need it except for high level Fractals (kind of a dungeon).

One thing to be aware of though: Path of Fire and Season 4 are aimed at 'end game' players - people who have completed everything in the core game. As such it's harder than the core game, and because there's been no level cap increase or new gear you can't rely on your stats to compensate. It's possible to do the entire story solo and a lot of the open-world stuff too (although you'll rarely be alone), but it's going to be difficult. If you haven't already I recommend spending some time just re-familiarising yourself with your character and the game and how to play in the core maps before moving on to expansion content.

Second thing: Do you own Path of Fire. Maybe a silly question but I know some people didn't realise they had to buy it, and without that you can't play any of the expansion stuff or Season 4. If not I recommend shopping around to find a good price (remembering that if it seems good to be true and especially if you're just going to be emailed a key, then it's probably fake and using it could get your account banned). If you have then you're good to go. You don't need to buy Season 4 because at the moment it's being given away free to anyone who logs in.

You'll need to start Path of Fire first, because Season 4 starts in the expansion maps and you can't get there without doing the 1st story instance. But you don't need to finish the expansion story (although bear in mind you'll get a lot of spoilers, and the plot may not make any sense if you skip to Season 4).

Also, in case you're not aware, so far only the first episode of Season 4 has been released. Episode 2 is probably coming later this month or next month, but hasn't been announced yet. The next episode will be a few months after that, and so on for about a year or two. Presumably until the next expansion is ready.

Living Season 4 Episode 1 is unlocked for you since you logged in while it was active, but you can't play it without PoF. That might seem strange, but it means that if you buy PoF next month, or next year, or whenever, then that Season 4 episode will be there waiting for you. Living Seasons 2, 3, and 4 are not like Season 1 which happened live and can't be played now. They are more just like additional story chapters between the main expansions.

No party is necessary to complete the story. Just for open-world content like bounties and so on.

Thanks, that clears things up, I do have Path of Fire. I'll start small and re-familiarize myself with the ele and focus on getting access to the new specializations.

Q: How do I participate in Season 4? I don't even have the Crystal Desert area unlocked.A: You need to own Path of Fire and have done the first story instance (that gives you access to the maps). After that you can do the first story of season 4E1 and after that you can go to the first season 4 map

Q: Do I require a party to progress to Season 4?A. No, but the first instance to unlock the map is daunting. Specially if you are not very experienced. But the plus side is that you have unlocked the episode and can do it anytime you want now. As of season 2 the content is repeatable once unlocked. You can even unlock previous seasons by buying them with gems.

Your gear is good to go. Although if you are interested in fractals or raids you might need an upgrade AND want to switch to newer stat combo's. But as said, season one is gone forever, but all the rest can be done whenever you want to do it. Take your time getting used to the game again.

My personal advice would be to start with PoF and unlock the mounts. They are fun. A real quality of life AND a good way to learn the new mastery system. You also might want to try the new elite specialisation for your class (weaver). It allows you to yield a sword and to combine attunements. It also grants new traits and new utility/healing/elites skills.
