There seems to be something weird going on with forum badges. Today I've gotten badges for 25 Likes and for 25 Insightfuls even though neither reaction is available on this forum.

I assume it's something to do with Like and Insightful being an alternate name/version of Thumbs Up and Helpful, but even then I've already got badges for 50 of each, so I shouldn't be getting one now for 25.

question is there some place to learn about the badging system? what badge are available and requisite to get them?

The lack of ability to add images to the forums is outlandish at best, and if, as you stated your security person says they are a threat - you should send him back to get further training. Its 2017- we should have images as a part of the forums.

Apparently, it's not images per se. It's apparently a risk inherent to the Vanilla Forum software. If I understand correctly (and I'm pretty sure I don't entirely get it):

    • Images can be hijacked to include malicious code.
    • It's possible to scan images using heuristics that would identify known cases (but not all possible risks).
    • Some forum software apparently allows for quarantining images until they are 'tested'; some does not.
    • Vanilla apparently doesn't come with the ability.

    According to wikipedia:

Most forums provide the option for a user to upload an image along with a message posting. This is usually accompanied by a space limit (e.g. 1MB per user) to prevent users from filling up the forum host's webspace. Some forums also allow other types of files to be uploaded. Some allow inline linking to images hosted on image hosting services.
One major usability issue is whether images can be uploaded to a forum and displayed inline in message postings easily (or at all). The presence of "image attachment uploading" does not imply that in-message display of images within the flow of message text is possible (or if possible, easy to achieve).

I can't claim that I understand why ANet chose a forum software that didn't include this ability, but... there are so, so many business tradeoffs required when licensing a third party system. For example, here are some no-brainer reasons why ANet might have done it: 50% lower cost, more efficient data storage, customization that requires less micromanagement by ANet's web people (not their biggest team, and they have other priorities), and so on.

tl;dr I'm no fan of the decisions that led to no image uploading, but it might be more complicated and more reasonable a choice than it appears to us. (At the same time, I wish we could hear more about the actual risks and the tradeoffs.)

so you cannot upload a image from a pc. but can you link a image from the web using code? example: < img src= name of the image link height=42 with=42 >

  • can they add edit button to be able to go edit when you made a mistake? from a post or a quotes?

  • @stephanie wise.7841 Look at the gear icon on the far right next to your timestamp, and click on it. That will allow you to edit your post.

    Correct.
In effect, ANet is saying that they're willing to let the hosting site worry about their own security.

So, the question I have to ask is: Will this new forum make this a thing of the past? Someone mentioned they might prefer reddit's form of discussion. Is this the sole reason? If so, will this new forum allow such a functionality? If this is not the reason ... why? What is preventing or stopping them in posting here as well? If there's a question on reddit dev wants to answer and there's no such question or thread on this forum, what's preventing her/him to copy the post here? Or ask someone in community management dept to do it?

Or is plausible deniability the only reason? Meaning "If it is not said on our official pages, we can deny anything". I understand that. I don't agree with it, but I do understand. But wouldn't it make more sense if ANET then instructed their devs to post as musch as they desire, but to do so as official representative only on these official pages?

Personally, I agree that the official forums is the ideal place for ANET developers to post and hold conversations. I agree that the debs function as official representatives of ANET, even when posting on their own time. The fact that even on Reddit they have their own tag identifying them as Anet employees strongly suggests that they also share this understanding of the nature of this role. Personally, I am not a fan at all of reddit and would be happiest if I never have to go there to get GW2 information.

That said, I disagree with the above response in two significant points. First, working backwards through the comments, suggesting that ANet might use reddit for plausible deniability, and certainly saying "only reason" goes beyond suggesting that is one of ArenaNet's deliberate intentions in using that forum, is not at all fair to either the developers themselves or the company as a whole. In the 10+ years I have been using their content, never once have I seen from them any indication of any form of duplicity, deception, lying or whatever word one might attach to it. If they change their plans, they often announce it straight up. I have seen several instances where players have called them out on something and they have been open about changes in direction, vision, lack of resources, etc. That corporate attitude has been even more visible with MO in the last year and a half.

Secondly, I don't expect to see mirroring of every single comment developers make on reddit on this forum. The formats simply do not line up, they are different forms of communicating that are not identically compatible. Even if the comments were brought over, without the context of other conversation to which they are answering those answers will be in large part confusing or even possibly unintentionally misleading because we would be reading them entirely out of context.

The above post suggests that ArenaNet employees only post on this forum. How many people are on reddit that never even open this forum? How much of their player base would they abandon doing that? I expect that posting on reddit as well as the forums allows them to interact with a much greater breadth of their users than the forums alone, although I am making an assumption in that and would happily accept correction if I am wrong.

That leaves the rest of us that closely follow the game and what the official representatives have to say the need to look at multiple locations if we want to stay abreast of every detail they have to say. From the perspective of one of those consumers this is certainly less than ideal, but not worth getting too worked up about.

  • Add a preview feature when I can hover over the title of a post and read the first part of it. Why? Because many people, if not most people, do not know how to make an appropriate title. Example: Title- Quick question

Well, I'm not gonna click on that BS...but I would hover over it, and if I could help then I would click it, other than that I'll just ignore the majority of badly titled posts.

Can something please be done about the External Link warning on official wiki links? These links were exempt from the external link warning on the old forums, they should be exempt from them here too.

Please stop assuming I'm a male, I am female.

  • Really like how the new forums looks and works. I'm not a frequent forum user though so it would've been nice if there was an e-mail about it so we would've known from the start!

  • Hello guys and gals, i was wondering if I can make any suggestions for improving the game here? If this is the right place to post , or i hope you can point me in the right direction please.

You can create a Discussion (thread) in the sub-forum that is most apt; General Discussion sub-forum for general game/gameplay suggestions, PvP sub-forum for PvP gameplay suggestions, WvW for WvW gameplay suggestions, etc., etc.

You can also post in an existing thread that shares the same topic as your suggestion.

    Good luck.

  • Restrictions on initial account customisation are a little limiting for me. The addition of advanced markdown features is a very nice change though.

  • Can we have a fix to images links(show them directly in the thread) or at least a website white list for the "external link warning"? It's really annoying when I need to double click a link.

    Joko lies, Balthazar don't.

  • I would just like to say thank you.
    Steady progress.

  • The old forum was better readable but that might also simply mean I have to get used to this forum. I don't know. What I do dislike is that these forums don't hold the history of the old forums.

Now that might have been on purpose but I still don’t like it.

  • Can't say I like the headline font. It feels "shoutie". Slightly hard to read. A sans-serif font would be better.

  • I don't know if I'm overlooking it, but please provide / recreate the option over an official ANet post to jump to the next ANet post within the thread.

Currently, it's a real hassle trying to find if there are anymore ANet posts within the thread. This could also save ANet posters a lot of headaches, since posts often get buried within the thread.

    Thanks

The forum software that is used (called "Vanilla Forums") doesn't include robust tools against malicious code in images. Thus, all outside images & embedded links are prohibited; it's not specific to avatars. (As to why Vanilla doesn't include the tools or why they can't be added to the forum servers, you'd have to ask a Forum Software and/or Security expert.)

  • It would be nice if we could dismiss the forum-wide notification on the 'External Link Warning' page. I hope it eventually goes away.

  • On the iPad landscape viewport, the text field width is still too wide for me to be able to read without zooming in so much that I can only read 3/4s of the line at once and have to scroll left and right for each line. BBC News site and most other forums have a smaller width and are perfect to read. This, though, is a pain to read.

  • Can you restore the ability to attach screenshots please? As of right now the only way we can show screenshots is by uploading elsewhere such as Imgur and then linking it.

    Certifiable gameaholic

  • Not sure if it was only me, but I did not/do not receive the forum-wide notification about new Avatars. I only saw there was one when I used the 'External Link Warning' page (which has the notification that can not be dismissed).

  • Why are the first posts of threads now with larger font? If it's a bug, hopefully it will soon be addressed. If it's a feature, please take it back.

Noticed a bug in the poll engine, it is possible to vote multiple options if you open multiple tabs.

    For example.
Open two tabs to this particular poll
    One tab vote option 1
    Another tab vote option 2

    Both votes will be registered.

Explanations of WvW Structures & Populations Issues

  • Hello, overall I like the new forum! However, I do have questions. Please forgive any already answered questions that I missed.
    1. Is there or will there be a new {Suggestions} Quality of Life Changes sticky?
    2. If "yes" to the above question, please can there be a way to let us know which of our suggestions are being considered or granted? (I keep checking the Hero: Equipment panel to see if the option to hide the "skirt" of the leggings was added. :/) There are so many good ones!
    3. On the old forum, I liked the distinction between stickys (red font) and non stickys (black font). Can we have that in the new forum please?

    Thank you.

That is likely due to the dimensions of the graphic background image on the right (div.Content-art.Content-art--right), which is 1,167 pixels wide by 1,000 pixels high (same for left graphic). The image is there, but the forums scale the wrap that holds the content to the user's display resolution so it fits on-screen. So the full image is there, but the wrap is shrunk to avoid horizontal scroll bars. I prefer to use CSS to hide the images (as I did in my dark theme below), but you could also use uBlock's (ad-block) element hiding feature and select the images to hide that element to prevent the horizontal scroll.

In addition to other changes to alter how the site looks for me, I've used CSS to move the notification popup to the lower left (like in my dark theme below) to get it out of the way of my writing or reading posts.

Instead of using my whole theme if you don't want to, you can manually change just the position of that alert popup using CSS and make this change in the page styling method you use (I use Stylish for Firefox):

/* Move Notification Popup Location */
    div.InformMessages, div.InformWrapper
    {
top: 91%; /* Moved to bottom of page - lower value moves it up the page */
left: 12%; /* Moved to left of page - higher value moves it to the right on the page */
    }

If you do use the theme, I gradually make updates to it and note what I've changed so you can remove whatever I do that you do not want, or make more changes to it on your own for your preference.

edit: A block/ignore option would be nice.

You may want to give my dark theme a look (linked below) to see if it would work for you. The first thing I did when they launched these forums was convert my theme over from the old forums and move that notification popup out of the center of the screen. Since then I've made additional changes noted in the changelog of my theme.

WOW - Done with forums for good now! - Someone creates a thread about Pharus's light on crit effect asking if it is a bug - I get warned for being "off topic" for commenting how to use the search and pointing out threads discussing Pharus and it being an intended effect... Goodbye all. Happy gaming.

  • The new forum you have provided us is ok. I feel like I am limited with what I can change on my profile. If I want to call myself a different name, I should have that ability. If I want to upload my own image I should have the right to. I feel like I am being smothered by the lack of customization you guys allow. Stop smothering us and allow us to customize our profile for a better experience.

  • Will all the helpful guides in the old forum (profession build advice etc.) be lost? Can't you guys just archive threads/posts from the old forums on the new one?

While looking at the forum list, I noticed something missing from the WvW forum that both the PvP and Fractals/Dungeons forums have.

With megaserver destroying the ability of a WvW guild to recruit from the PvE maps of their own server, having a separate "looking for" section for them on the WvW forum could be an alternative replacement.

  • Not sure if this has been raised as a problem yet or not, but when I give a Thumbs Up to someone's comment, I can't tell that I've done it! The number changes, sure, but if I'm going back thru comments, I can't tell if I was the one who gave Thumbs Up or someone else. Can we get the Thumbs Up icon to change colours or something? Thanks.

The original post in a thread being larger text than the others.... I don't see a reason for this and I find it slightly obnoxious for some reason. Maybe it is because there is already too much space between things already. It's pretty clear what the OP is so I don't see the point.

  • Could you please remove the forum-wide Notification/Message from the 'External Link Warning' page. I think it's been there long enough, and I'd rather not have to scroll down the page every time just to move on to the link.
Also, why is there an 'External Link Warning' to the Wiki, but none to say, Twitter? Makes no sense to me.

  • Overall forums are great, but a couple of things I would say need addressing.

-Remove the "draft saved" message when typing a post! It appears far to often, and on a phone / tablet it blocks the text so you can't see what you're typing, and it's a pain to keep having to close it every few mins! This message needs to go!

-Why is it when someone posts a poll the text on the poll options is always in full caps?! Looks horrible and is a complete eyesore! Full caps shouldn't be a thing anywhere on the forums. Even in topic titles!

Fix signatures on English forum. They work on the French one so I don't see why it doesn't here.
Some people paste their big signatures to every posts they make and it clutters an already over cluttered forum.

  • Thanks for removing the forum-wide notification from the 'External Link Warning'.

I have to say, the Dev Tracker is absolutely useless. And, today, the carousel isn't working correctly; several Dev posts seem to have just disappeared.
Please, please, do something about the Dev Tracker.

  • I used to love coming on to the forums every day just to read. I would look at what was being talked about, answer questions and give help where I could. It was part of my day, something that I did every day before signing in to play. It was a part of my day that I enjoyed, that I looked forward to.

Now I HATE the forums. They are hard to understand, hard to read. The only reason that I came here today was to post this. In short, the new forums are horrible and I want the old format back.

I was told this was a design decision. It was believed that it gave the first post deserved prominence. I confess that I do not care for it, either. I have asked for a review, but at this point, there are "bigger fish to fry" with design decisions, and I'm focusing on a few more significant issues. We may adjust the discrepancy in first post/subsequent post font size in the future, or it may stay as it is. For while I am ArenaNet's "forum product owner," I don't have an unlimited budget, and I believe such a change may involve a payment. As I'm sure you'll agree is practical and desirable, I want to prioritize issues such that we're getting them addressed over time and so that they are reasonable within the budget.

Interesting, I went into this thread to read new posts and found that the post I had previously typed and abandoned a week or so ago is still there awaiting for me to post. That's kinda useful, especially if I have to come back later due to afk or a power cut. Whether it was because I had quoted another post I'm not sure.

Also, is there a way to delete posts after you post one? Perhaps I am just being blind, but I couldn't see said option.
