Firebrand Specialization Updates for the Path of Fire Launch

Hail Guardians,

With Path of Fire on the horizon, we anticipate many axes being sharpened and magical tomes being read. Since the Elite Specialization Preview weekend and various stress tests we’ve been listening and reviewing your feedback. We wanted to give you a list of changes, specific to the upcoming Firebrand specialization, that have been made since those game versions.

  • Tome activation skills reduced from 0.75s activations to 0.5s. Added a 0.5s delay before you can use 'stow tome' upon entry into a tome.
  • Tome of Courage: Reduced the cooldown from 90 to 50s.
  • Tome of Justice: Fixed a tooltip display issue. This was inflicting 2 seconds of burning, but was only displaying 1s.
  • Unflinching Charge: This ability now grants 4s aegis in addition to its previous effects.
  • Unbroken Lines: This ability now grants 4s of aegis in addition to its previous effects.
  • Tome of Resolve: Reduced the cooldown from 45s to 40s. Healing scaling of ALL its skills increased significantly.
  • Radiant Recovery: Increased number of conditions cleansed from 2 to 3.
  • Eternal Oasis: Increased the number of conditions converted from 3 to 5.
  • Mantra of Solace: Increased healing scaling for base activation and final charge skills. This skill now applies its effects in a 120 radius around you in addition to a 300 range cone ahead of you. This ability can now be cast while in the air.
  • Mantra of Flame: This skill now applies its effects in a 120 radius around you in addition to a 300 range cone ahead of you. This ability can now be cast while in the air.
  • Mantra of Truth: This skill now applies its effects in a 120 radius around you in addition to a 300 range cone ahead of you. This ability can now be cast while in the air.
  • Mantra of Lore: This skill now applies its effects in a 120 radius around you in addition to a 300 range cone ahead of you. This ability can now be cast while in the air.
  • Mantra of Potence: This skill now applies its effects in a 120 radius around you in addition to a 300 range cone ahead of you. This ability can now be cast while in the air.
  • Mantra of Liberation: This skill now applies its effects in a 120 radius around you in addition to a 300 range cone ahead of you. This ability can now be cast while in the air.
  • Symbol of Vengeance: Reduced cast time by 0.25s.
  • Burning Edge: Increased radius slightly, from 25 to 30 degrees (mirrored).
  • Legendary Lore: Tome of Courage effect is now 4s protection in place of 5s of aegis.

As you can see, most of the Firebrand changes are aimed at gameplay flow issues that were raised after the demo and stress tests: In particular the cast times for tomes felt a touch sluggish, the impact from Rome of Resolve’s ability to heal in a pinch was on the low side, and mantras that affect allies being cone-based when used by a melee-centric specialization were among the points we wanted to address.

See you in the Crystal Desert!

  • Thanks for the heads up, Irenio! I think all those changes are deserved and in the right direction.

    Omg i am in love!

  • Lowered CD and cast time are nice, though need some testing before saying if good enough. (also thanks for huge lowered CD on courage)
Good see ToJ was bug, though it is making loremaster even more of a must take trait.

Mantra did improve alot there with AoE change. Though very sad to see no change to mantra of flame and truth. Flame being weak when balt runes and healing mantra is close to out damage it.(Better not go with solution of upping balts 6 set internal cooldown)

Legendary Lore: this change by itself seems bad to me, because burn on block and heal on aegis. But since you putting aegis on 2 most important tome skills, this change is actually great overall.

Changes to resolve seems good. It needed more healing power and bit more condi cleanse never hurts.

One thing i am really sad isn´t there.......
Quickfire either needs a buff or changed to work like venom, otherwise Loremaster will always be picked over it.

  • Very nice improvements but mantra range is still small, the shield 4 skill had a cone range of 600, why can't the mantras? The AOE radius is nice but also a bit too small still.

  • "Tome activation skills reduced from 0.75s activations to 0.5s." This is one of the biggest changes that was necessary due to the tomes feeling very clunky. However, if they still don't offer more support than other professions, its going to be a dead spec from the start. Hopefully these buffs will be enough to allow it to at least compete across the game in metas that have mostly settled even with the other new specs coming.

Do mantras now double strike on targets in forward melee range?

    • Tome activation skills reduced from 0.75s activations to 0.5s. Added a 0.5s delay before you can use 'stow tome' upon entry into a tome.
Good change but .5s might still be a bit high. .25s might be the sweet spot but we'll see

    • Tome of Courage: Reduced the cooldown from 90 to 50s.
      Very good change

    • Tome of Justice: Fixed a tooltip display issue. This was inflicting 2 seconds of burning, but was only displaying 1s.
Tooltip updates are always welcomed to know what we're getting

    • Unflinching Charge: This ability now grants 4s aegis in addition to its previous effects.
Spammable Aegis output is going to be nutty.

    • Unbroken Lines: This ability now grants 4s of aegis in addition to its previous effects.
I'm not sure Aegis makes sense on this ability. We have protection and toughness to mitigate damage but Aegis to negate 1 attack.

    • Tome of Resolve: Reduced the cooldown from 45s to 40s. Healing scaling of ALL its skills increased significantly.
Will have to see what the numbers are because significantly is purely subjective.

    • Radiant Recovery: Increased number of conditions cleansed from 2 to 3.
I guess you're still putting bandaids on condition control

    • Eternal Oasis: Increased the number of conditions converted from 3 to 5.
      See above

    • All Mantras: Increased healing scaling for base activation and final charge skills. This skill now applies its effects in a 120 radius around you in addition to a 300 range cone ahead of you. This ability can now be cast while in the air.
How about you standardize the mantras and up them to 240 like the Mesmer mantras? Otherwise, it's a buff but still pretty bad.

    • Symbol of Vengeance: Reduced cast time by 0.25s.
      Good change.

    • Burning Edge: Increased radius slightly, from 25 to 30 degrees (mirrored).
I assume you mean Blazing Edge but a buff to axe skills is warranted.

    • Legendary Lore: Tome of Courage effect is now 4s protection in place of 5s of aegis.
      A good change.

  • This is fantastic. I can't wait to play support on my guardian and all the changes you guys have made will help greatly toward that goal.

good lord i am absolute trash at this video game

Overall I'm not overly impressed with the changes. It still doesn't address the core issues with the elite (https://forum-en.guildwars2.com/forum/professions/guardian/Firebrand-Demo-Weekend-Feedback for those who want to read).

  • firebrand was clunky and will still be clunky... gj really...

  • Very happy with these changes :)

Wait, no word on Axe base damage numbers? Unless I'm mistaken, Axe base damages are nearly the same as Sword, but with the added benefit of condition damage. Is this intended?

That seems to be a reasonable intent; it does lock you into a very specific set of stats offensively. The Golem masters will let us know.

If you think balancing is only driven by performance and justified by comparisons to other classes then prepare to be educated:

  • Thanks Arenanet, you listened to the players, especially with the mantras cone disaster.

I love you guys, now I am going to really enjoy my Firebrand, I can't wait.

    Cheers!

  • Those are good changes, I still think Azure Sun should be a blast finisher though, because right now firebrand rely too heavily on teammates to blast finish Shining River, and I’m still bothered by the activation time on tome, but I’ll try the new ones before screaming to infamy.

120 radius is way too small to be useful in pvp or wvw. Should just get rid of the cone and make it 240 radius. Here's how close you would have to stand next to someone in order to hit them with the radius.

    https://i.imgur.com/btdFVbR.jpg

That is a very small range. Better sit on the commanders kitten in wvw then. :/

  • Hail Irenio!

Thanks for these little tweaks and changes! The new elite specialization for guardian looks amazing and I love how you guys reintegrated tomes back in the profession!

I love the updates, but I was wondering if tomes could have more of a kit feeling. I will explain myself. What I mean is it seems punishing to go into a tome only for one skill at the moment. Would be interesting to see the cooldown be in proportion to the number of charges remaining or some mechanic that would permit the player to activate an effect from one of the skills without having to be penalized with a full cooldown duration on the tome.

Pardon me if such thing already exists as I had just a little time during betas to try it out. If there is indeed a trait for that, it was unnoticed.

Very excited to try the Firebrand this Friday ! =)

  • I hope the healing buff is substantial. I always wanted to be a pure support Guardian. fingers crossed

  • Soooooo does this mean the Hold your ground utility is working as intended with Stalwart speed!?!?! Incoming full deeps firebrand with quickness!

  • Abelisk.4527Abelisk.4527 Member ✭✭✭✭

Whenever Anet says "significantly" they mean it: see Bloodstone Warped Hide.

  • Very good changes indeed! Now I actually want to try condi Firebrand for real.

Not sure about the extra 120 radius on mantras, it still seems bad (maybe at least 150~180?), but I'll try it out.

Tome of Resolve: Reduced the cooldown from 45s to 40s. Healing scaling of ALL its skills increased significantly.

It seems to be intent to be very slow, but powerful heal, not sure if this will work out. I prefer a faster (~30 sec CD) but weaker than this option, this would make a more supportive (healer) role more reliable and viable. But still, I'll try it out to see how works out.

Symbol of Vengeance: Reduced cast time by 0.25s.

(A bit off topic) Now that Symbol of Vengeance got its cast time reduced a bit, you could consider reducing the Symbol of Faith (mace #2) as well? Its cast time is a bit too high as well.

Will be new changes to core Guard/DH too?

Again, very good changes, can't wait to try it out.

Eternal Oasis is kind of silly strong now. I am not sure if they realize how much stronger they made this effect. I just hope they do not over do it with condis to make this effect balanced.

  • Thank you Dev team! These changes look great, can't wait to test the numbers!

  • I would like to say: thank you for actively reviewing our feed back. This seems to be in the right direction, based off the weaknesses in Beta. I'm looking forward to the FB on Friday. Thank you for listening ANet

With the buffs they made, firebrand, ironically, seems to be very anti-condi. Use courage resistance, using resolve for condi clear burst, take pure of voice, take two shouts, take the cleanse mantra, and you got yourself a condi cleansing machine that would put core bunker guard to shame.

Because for some reason Anet thinks giving them tiny cone targeting will differentiate them from Mesmer mantras.

Mantras are fine even without the 240 radius. If anything maybe a 450 cone but I wouldn't need it. Good notes on the coefficient changes. I'm a fan of everything on this list.

You still have Aegis spam, its just on ToC 1 and 5 untraited now, which is pure benefit.

Also, don't think I didn't see that pun.

Yepp, i played it with at least one shout in every setup during beta and it was good versus condi spammers. Shouts are great for FB. Add in trooper runes and viper gear and you have damage as well. The obvious shouts are retreat and SyG imo. If ou trait and build for those retreat is pretty sweet.

Still working on how to squeeze in retreat and trooper runes and still practically maintain 100% uptime on quickness in pvp and wvw.

I predict that honor/virtues will be fotm tbh.

    Mantra improvement is very welcomed!
Now it's easier to use when stack.

  • This looks like a step in the right direction, we will have to test the changes to know if the main problems with firebrand are gone.
By the way any info about the Tome Animation? Are you planning to add the old books from the old one as many people have requested?

  • All of these changes are very much welcomed and in the right direction. However do you have any news on whether the tomes will actually look like tomes (like the old elite skills). In the demo all I saw was floating pages and an invisible axe in my hand, which looked very strange to play.

  • Thank you so much for the mantra changes. We are all realy happy that you listened our community and changed them. Really appreciated!

Some of these changes were verbatim changes requested by some of the more avid players from the pvp community, awesome! In particular, reduction of ToC cooldown to 50s was one I kept pushing for, glad to see that change was made.

We may not realize it yet but I'm very confident that FB is going to play a lot more smoothly and be a lot more effective with these buffs. Playing it during the demo weekend, I felt it was almost viable and just needed a tad bit of buffing (just numerical buffs, honestly) and we received exactly that.

Some changes that we didn't receive that we really should though: Mantra final charges should for a few of the mantras should be a bit more impactful. As it stands, some of them (Liberation, Lore, Potence and Flame) have final charges that are essentially identical to initial charges. This really encourages you to only use 2/3 charges and never use the final one unless you're 100% sure it's going to finish out the fight.

As much as I would have loved to hear Tomes becoming kits with pages as initiative, a CD reduction will be nice. And great to hear that mantras are AoE now as well.

As said, Tomes being used like kits with pages as initiative would be perfect! I felt like using the Tomes was too quick, the sooner was it up than it was on cooldown...

I read thru all all other elite changes that are coming and notice that most of them will also have updates to core abilities.

Will Guardian get some changes to core, maybe a rework of the staff??

  • I really like the changes, thanks Irenio for addressing some of concerns we had regarding this spec. One suggestion from my side regarding core guardian. I think If pure of heart trait would be changed to apply the same effect for 5 people as a unique buff, that would make a healing/support guardian and firebrand a really good option from pve perspective. Sure, numbers would have to be balanced so it's not broken in any game mode, but I think this could make a healer guard an interesting option to consider for raids.

Pretty sure Unscathed Contender could be allowed to affect anyone under our Aegis. PoH already heals anyone who gets a block with our aegis (only way to really heal imo).

  • As nice as a CD recharge on Tome of Courage is, Tomes are too cool to be on such a long cooldown. Or on a cooldown at all.

And mantras are too lame to be to be Utility skills. I know you've tried to make them flavourful by making it a cone, which is a nice idea. But doesn't take away the effect that mantras have in most cases, ->charge->spam is one of the most unengaging types of gameplay in my opinion.

Like others have mentioned, kits would've been a MUCH more fun way to play firebrand. Since the tomes are imo actually really fun to use.

  • I'm really happy the CD on the tomes are less, but not really feeling the 120 radius. Unless someone(s) are playing on top of you basically, this radius is moot, and won't benefit. Would much rather prefer at least a 400 radius & get rid of the cone in front of you altogether. 600 radius would be even better. Guess I won't be as much support in pve as I had hoped. :(

I played mostly a quickness/eagis spamming Fb during beta and could apply 10 aegis (retreat, shield 4, 3 from mantra of solace and 5 from ToC (didnt trait tomes at all so only 5 pages)) to the team. I also had about 1100 healing power when having quickness which gave me about 1200 healing per aegis on me and when i traited Force of Will those healed my allies for close to 1400 per aegis.

If i understood the changes correct they removed aegis from legendary lore and replaced it with protection (great imo and needed for frontline game play) and added aegis in skill 4 and skill 1 making it still spammable. This is an improvement since you dont want to cover your own existing aegis. In the previous version you had to wait with skills to have aegis removed. Now you will have 3 spells as fillers (2,3 and 5) and making game play much more fluid.

Get in a fight with ToJ and use all pages, adding ashes thru skill 5 on ToJ and from quickfire, cast 4 last and trigger combo field with hammer (might). Burn all pages (5) (doing damage)
Swap to ToC spamming aegis, all 5 pages, trigger combifield with hammer and cleanse conditions. (prevent damage and healing)
Swap to ToR, skill 5 first, 2, 3,1 and 4, trigger combo field with hammer for aoe heal.

All this is done with stability, regen, condi cleanse from mantras, heal and aegis from mantra of solace/retreat and perma quickness/swiftness. Swap to axe/scepter for some serious dps.

lots of micro management and the skill cap on guadian just went up dramatically.

Tbh i find the changes anet has done to be spot on for the way i want to play FB. I just hope it is enough. I am seriously concerned about not having any bubbles and very more combat mobility.

I might ditch my thief/deadeye and come back to my guardian.

Forgot to say that when you are done with the tomes you will have >10 might and dodge roll heals you and allies for >1200hp.

we dont know how much better scaling ToR will have with healing power but if you apply those 10 aegis correct, no over write, and doge roll 3 times you will have at least 14400 heals on you, add in ToR skills and triggering a water field 20k heals in a very short time frame isnt unrealisitic. It will not be on par with druid/tempest over time but as burst healer i cant see none of those match the numbers tbh.

But, and it is a big but, i have not played tempest and druid that much and might be doing it wrong.
