Arenanet really needs to sort out the disconnects either during or at the end of most storylines. For many people they cant spend 6 hours just trying to get through one piece of the storyline. This should be near to the top of their agenda to patch or reconnect at the point you lost connection for most it is tiresome and frustrating. No doubt if it was an exploit, patch would be incoming asap
6 times today I have tried to complete 'The Departing' all connections lost very near to the end when about to open door to portal.I have tried reducing FPS, performance, quality and adding arenanet to the host file to no avail.
Update I threw the last dice and deleted my Gw2 game cache in the Appdata folder and FINALLY was able to complete this part of the storyline

I have good internet. I'm hard-lined in. I never lose server connection when in the regular game. Not when there's huge amounts of people. Or open world events or bosses. Never.
But when I DO lose server connection? ALWAYS DURING A LONG-KITTEN STORY MISSION. And then I have to do the entire thing ALL.OVER.AGAIN. My most recent, infuriating encounter with this was during "The Departing" mission. Which, if any of you have played is quite long. I was literally 1 minute away from finishing and then it said it lost server connection. This isn't the first time this has happened either. Always seems to happen on LONG missions too.
Is there something about story missions that makes them inherently unstable? Like they've made SO many excellent improvements in the 5 years I've played, but the whole "have to do the entire mission over again" thing is still a problem. Is there really nothing that can be done?
kitten, why Anet
Arenanet has been having some connection issues since the launch of PoF. I don't know if you were playing at launch, but people couldn't even start the story missions. I know it's frustrating, I had just finished the story mission where we just arrive in the desert. However my game crashed when I tried to leave the story instance. So I did not get the waypoint in the desert. I therefore had to go through the beginning mission again to get in the desert. They have been working on it though. Must better than it used to be a week ago.
The Night of Fires (after defeating the Forged boss, before going to the temple of Kormir) and the Departing (after being knocked down by you-know-who the last time). 5/5 times now... 5 different characters... always disconnects. Second time always works. Same pace of play, everything. The Departing one is particularly brutal... You to do everything all over. ;(
I will agree that I dislike "The Departing". Its one of the few missions that due to its length is more prone to disconnections. I've noticed it in other missions and it can be very infuriating. Like the mission "To Kill A God" which isn't lengthy in itself but I experienced several disconnects which turned a pleasant and fun boss fight into more of a boring chore.
This has been a problem for a long time and I don't think Anet has any plans on trying to fix it. Just happened to me during Prisoners of the Dragon in HoT. I never get disconnects while playing any other aspect of the game. I almost never get disconnects playing other online games. I don't know what it is about story instances but they are very unstable. Unfortunately it always seems to happen during long instances where the npcs love to talk and walk at a snail's pace.
I UTTERLY hate this problem - it is really ruining the game for me. It always happens right at the very end of very long missions....I've just had it happen right at the end of Living World Season 3 (I'm playing catchup before heading into PoF content) and it crashed after what must've been about an hours-worth of mission. This happened constantly through the HoT content as well. I registered a complaint with ArenaNet and they did nothing about it. How can they not have fixed this yet?!!
I know complaining here will will have no effect whatsoever on ARENANET but after almost completing two separate stories TWICE in a row EACH, and LOSING ALL MY PROGRESS, one PoF and another in the original game I am just so fed up. I NEVER get disconnected playing the normal game it is just in the kitten stories. I have no idea what to do. WHY oh why does it choose stores to disconnect.
I Had OFTEN the same problem, most of the time during story missions, usually at the end, and I hade always to do again all, great was at the end of my personal story, I slained zhaitan and .. puff, disconnection and .. do it again from the start! praise game designer, pardon, Joko...
This may help: https://en-forum.guildwars2.com/discussion/23404/tech-assist-issue-i-disconnected-from-a-instance-during-a-cut-scene-or-cinematic#latest
This problem has existed for over a year and still nothing done.
Truthfully it the issue with the change of media usually going from game media to steaming video media ie. cutscenes usually. This has been a thing for some time even with Heart of Thorns. The Host file related workaround is the only fix I've seen..
I love GW2. I want to play it. But these random disconnects are absolutely killing my fun. My boyfriend and I have been playing through the vanilla game's story content, and the disconnects are frequent and unforgiving (due to no checkpoints). They often happen after cutscenes. Like, I'll be in a cutscene/conversation with a story NPC, and as soon as the cutscene ends I find myself with the disconnect image above my head and get booted out. These disconnects seem to be more likely to happen at the end of the mission, and seem to be much more likely on longer story missions. We've been DC'd twice on the final story mission. Once when we were about to board the airship, and another time after killing the mouth of Zhaitan. It's turning what should be a fun storyline into a grueling slog.
I've read that not only is this a common issue, but it plagues all other aspects of the game (Heart of thorns instances, living world instances, path of fire instances, fractals, etc). Has Arenanet ever commented on this issue? Is there a fix on the way? We've decided to take an extended break from the game, hoping that when we come back it will be fixed. But I really want to play the rest of the game! But it's a game ruining bug.
I don't think this is on my end. I never have any connection issues in anything else. I got a completely new computer recently and it still happens, too.
I have been running into this also (just happened a few minutes ago when doing The Steel Tide) as I have been playing through the story with my daughter. Kind of getting tired of having to run through missions a second time because I get booted after the cut scene.
Same, can't start LW4.
Random freez, rip instance.
2018 and still no f... RECONNECT button, geezzz, i miss old GOOD GW1 ;s
Can confirm. Bought full game and have been going through story. Have to complete every scene twice because at the VERY END it disconnects and resets to beginning. Normally after beating final boss.
I have extremely high speed internet, no issues with any other games, nor any issues with GW2 except on the personal story. It happens like clockwork. I go in to every instance planning to do it twice now. Since I have generally only 1-2 hours at a time to play it's ruining this aspect of the game.
This is happening to me. No matter if Iam in PvP or PvE. This happens everyday around 7-10pm EST. Other games I play are fine. Like Final Fantasy 14 online.
I log in to the game an experience latency issues, lag, and then disconnect.
Arena Net... what’s going on?
I feel your pain. I have gone through the story part To Kill A God twice and was kicked from the game immediatley. I love the epic scene but I want to finish the story as I have alot of other things to do in the game. I hope someone in Anet will be able to solve what is wrong. I absolutely love this game. I am a disabled Vet with PTSD this game has been a god send as it keeps me occupied and I have met alot of really nice folks. There have been a few hiccup's but Anet has always resolved any issue for me.
Finally made it through personal story (after having to play each scene multiple times) and now I can confirm it does the same with HoT and PoF. Sorry, but not doing this again.
Edit: for reference, I have 1000mbps fiber internet, and nothing else ever dc's for me.
Ever since the Wintersday event I have also been experiencing game client crashes and frozen screens. Have been playing since the original game came out with no issues. I have read on this & other forums many players having the same issues. ANET has still not responded with any type of fix/updates which would resolve this. Have tried changing exe file, memory test, changed installation drives with no resolve. any other fix ideas would be appreciated as at the moment it is no longer fun to play.
It's hard to know if this is a legitimate workaround, but my friend who has recently joined has also had the same issues. I myself, have never been kicked out durning/after cinematics or cutscenes, (and I'm on a cruddy laptop) but have been well aware of the issue for a long time. So we were trying to determine why it was so bad for him, and not for me. I do run the game in windowed mode, always, he was always fullscreen.. So he tried windowed, and no more issues so far. This might be coincidence, or there might be something to it. I can only imagine the frustration, being unable to complete long sequences, struggling to get to the end, only to have to do it all over again. It's worth trying anyway, if it's consistantly happening to full screen users.
Yes, it needs to be fixed bad, but maybe in the meantime, we can find something that works.
Every single time its a long boss fight, or sequence, I ALWAYS END UP CRASHING. ALWAYS. What is wrong with these servers??? Is there an option to disable ALL cinematics from story??? I HAD TO DO THE DEPARTED TWICE!! NOW I HAVETO CONFRONT BALTHASAR AGAIN???? WTH
I'm now logging in for my fourth attempt to get through "The Sacrifice" mission. Each time I've gotten further. Each time I start from the beginning (going through the gate) and have to endure the chatter again (which, sadly, I can't "skip to end" as with the cinematic coversations). I'm starting to think I'm destined to do the real-life "vacuum the rug" mission -- why that one never DQ's I just don't know
Seems Anet is not listening - but then again my posts can't be seen - what a travesty this game is becoming.
It is a bug that happens far too often. It is happening in more story instances and more often. I have posted about this in the past.
I just disconnected at the end of Battle of Shaemoor. Seriously??
You get a new player and they disconnect on the first story. How long do you think they will want to stay around?
I am getting to the point of not wanting to do the story lie anymore because the disconnects. It is ruining the experience of the game.
Some story instances have save points, which is great. Anet really needs to find out the root cause and fix it.
Trying the suggestion at https://en-forum.guildwars2.com/discussion/23404/tech-assist-issue-i-disconnected-from-a-instance-during-a-cut-scene-or-cinematic#latest but so far still having to constantly repeat story content when it locks up coming out of a cutscene.
I have a very stable 200meg connection and can play GW2 for a 12hr+ stint and the only time I ever get disconnected is in a story mission after a cut-scene. (and usually a really long one).
i have this for a long time, i get the disconnect the moment i dont move for like 5 seconds, i always keep moving around especially during NPC conversations, else i DC.
Tonight I had a dream
OPTIONS
[x] Skip all cutscenes
Don’t fight the other ants
Fight the queens
I'm very tired of getting disconnected during story lines, if Arena doesn't fix I will either stop doing the story lines or I will stop the game altogether. I get disconnected at the end of a long story line and it happens around 50% of the time. It's nonsense and they need to get this S*&^ fixed asap. I never have this issue with other games and it's a known issue so why don't they fix it? Also, when submitting a ticket a person has to type too much information, my guess that is discourage submitting a ticket. I'm almost DONE with this game.
We have folks investigating this issue, but so far we haven't been able to reproduce it. We're trying to determine what the commonality is between players that run into this issue. If you haven't already, please submit a bug when it happens so we can get more data points.

We'd love to but a lot of the time it's a flat out kick to character select (or game termination). So we couldn't submit a bug report using the in-game function as that would report the wrong gamestate.
Having run into the issue myself a few times i can say that it generally occurs with lengthy monologues and something changing state in the environment be it a door (see Joko and The Departed) or elevator (see the Char and Roof Escape in the recent LS chapter).
I bet it's the Inquest doing it, they don't want you to find their nefarious plans.

I never disconnect during normal play or in dungeons. But it almost always happens after a cutscene in a story mission. Usually the ones that can't be skipped, and usually during the long 30mins ones. When I drop out of the story instance it just sits there with the Film-Reel over the characters head and nothing responds. Then the connection drops. I can log straight back in again and do it all over again. Some of these are taking half a dozen attempts to eventually get past which is wasted time and completely ruins the story immersion. Very frustrating.
Have tried the 'Heart of the Volcano' story mission 3 times now. Every time I get to the very last cutscene, it plays out (no skip option) and throws me back to the entrance to the instance with a film reel over my head to indicate I am in a cutscene. Then just sits there and eventually drops connection with a (7:11:3:191:101). I can play for 10+ hours on the trot doing events and other stuff without a disconnect. But story missions seem to do this more often than not these days.
Whatever Arenanet does when in these forced cut-scenes (or most likely the switching back out of them), the connection to the server really doesn't like it. This is killing the game for me and driving my wife (who also plays) crazy to the point where she's starting to not want to log in anymore. And having both purchased PoF, we haven't even gotten to it yet)
Have logged a ticket.... will log another if it helps. Or please suggest anything else I can do to try to troubleshoot this and I will try it.
So many threads about this issue and so little progress made.
This last week I have noticed a far, far better experience with regards to story disconnects than in recent months in that I haven't actually been disconnected at all. In addition, incidents of momentary latency spikes have also decreased. It's been pretty nice. I'm hoping it lasts.
Seems a common problem is that you FORCE people to watch a video which then seems to cause a DC .. why are these videos deemed oh so important they can't be skipped anyway?
Almost always during cut scenes. Once I get into a story and it disconnects during a cut scene. Next time I do the story the disconnects is at the exact same
point. I have a character waiting at the departed. I disconnected twice right after fight Balthazar.
It varies, but (for example) when playing co-op things can go awry if some players skip the cinematic and are able to interact with the game world while other players are still watching the cinematic. The cinematic might also be used as to cover up long distance teleports that would normally require a load screen.

Most of the time I am soloing a story when I disconnect.
Yes but I'm guessing the cinematics Jeffrey is talking about are going to be the same if you're with someone or running solo.

Does anyone remember having this issue before HOT came out?
For me it seems to have started with Heart of Thorns and has spread from there.
Perhaps something changed in the programing?
No, i don't recall it happening Pre-HoT. But a lot changed with HoT. We moved into full voiced acted cutscenes and a lot more mechanically demanding things happen behind the scenes.
It's really strange, I made two clone pc's for myself and my wife, we're both on the same internet connected to the router with ethernet cables and ONLY I get these disconnects.
I think story instances don't cope with lag. Open world does but the instances disconnect. It also seems to be when the "movie scenes" play but that again seems connected to the game not being able to communicate as quickly as it would like, so it disconnects.
That's my experience anyway.
If you can't reproduce to fix, do you think there's any possibility of check points. .OR, letting people join others story instances after they've started...i know people could choose to skip content this way. ..but if they do..does it really matter?
@OP, I rarely do story instances now. In fact I've started to spend more time in WvW and discovered an interest for that kind of gameplay.
I would rather a load screen honestly. If that's what you're doing..loading during cinematics, maybe that's part of the problem?
As for group..you could just..not allow skips if in a party or have a check screen "with cinematics or without" before entering.
@jediwolf, I also don't recall disconnects in story pre-HoT.
Many of us aren't getting any help from customer service.
We're not even allowed to be seen here.
So how can we report glitches when GW2 staff are abusing us?
I find this very irritating, I have had to go through fighting Zhaitan twice, and the very long story chapter before that one, too... Please fix this or add checkpoints, maybe both. I noticed there are "checkpoints" in the expansion stories, but this should be base-game too.
Currently I'm playing the personal story in core tyria, and so far was disconnected in two instances that I had to play again. One was where Ebonheart had to be freed of separatists just after the center was cleared, the other one was where I had to recruit two charr who were captured right after the talking cut scene in the ruins. In both cases my character was stuck with the watching-a-movie-symbol above his head for a few seconds, buttons had no impact anymore, until I got kicked to character selection. When I replayed the missions I just skipped all the cut scenes and could complete the missions.
These missions weren't the first ones I played after logging in when the dcs occurred, but the fourth or fifth ones.
System: Win 10 64bit, 16 GB Ram, Nvidia GTX 1060 3GB, GW2 is installed on a SSD
On another system (notebook, Win 10 64bit, 8 GB Ram, AMD integrated graphics card 2GB) I had dc's in about every second PoF-Story Mission, and they always happened because something that should happen/appear/disappear, aso. did not load. E.g. near the end of the first PoF-Mission I got several dc's with different characters after talking to the villager and right before the charr companion should give me the fire extinguisher. And there is no cut scene at all at this point. There should appear the I-have-to-say-something symbol above the charr's head before talking to him and getting the extinguisher, but this did not happen and this or something else right after talking to the villager resulted in a dc.
Are there any plans to try and solve the issue of being reset when not in a party after disconnected generally? This is not just a story problem. Working towards a HOT map reward Dc'ing and losing all progress - 2 hours in SAB trib mode progress lost if you DC are just a few examples where this issue causes many many players great frustration.
I would have thought that after the fiasco of the very first Living Story Southsun Karka event where mass disconnects caused huge problems, that the whole area of how to deal with DC'ing in general was an issue that required urgent attention.
Is it simply not possible to allow a 5-10 minute grace period where after reconnecting you are put back exactly (same map - same progress) where you were?
This happens often to me also... however the worst was this morning: final mission fight with Bal, defeated him, cut scene, disconnect!! That was messed up. That was such a long mission, it will be a while before I attempt it again.
very, very discouraging....
I've just come back after a long time away, brand new PC, installed the game and paid for the two expacs. Now I'm wasting my time playing through instances and losing all my progress at the end in some cutscene issue. I've googled it and I can easily find posts about it going back at least a year. I have to say I'm rather bothered by the fact that as I type this you haven't moved past the 'trying to recreate it' step. That sounds like you've been sitting on it for as long as it's been an issue. Maybe it's time to just skip that stage and start trying to fix it? Build the mechanics so that our progress is being saved intermittently.. especially have it saved upon completion - BEFORE the cutscenes start to roll. There are several ways you can do it. But I really hope you do it soon, because I don't pay to get frustrated and angry, and if I keep having this happen I'll be asking for my refund before on those expacs before my refund time expires.
