Another "Pick my class" post

Apologies guys; another "I'm an alt whore" post. I'll also caveat that I've so far played very limited end-game content, and have played none of the elite specialisations.

As to not waste your time, I'll get straight into the meat of it. I'm a WoW player, and enjoy GW2 for what it is but want to be good at one class across all aspects. My main criteria for picking a class is not to hinder myself for content (as in, pick a class that no-one wants for any one specific game type). I intend to initially base myself mostly around fractals and spvp, but still aim to raid and play WvW; I'm aware that I can just spvp with a level 2/3 or whatever, but I like investing myself in to a character. It also should be a good solo-class, as being as I'm recently returning I don't have an SPvP team for example.

So far, I've enjoyed most classes and I'm not scared of playing a difficult class as long as there exists a risk/reward basis. Equally from that, I don't want to pick a class that is difficult just for the sake of it.

My ideal class would be as follows:A desirable/necessary fractal/raid class, whilst also a pivotal SPvP role; preferably a playmaker/roamer or tasked with solo duties (base defence).

My worst would be:Struggle to get into groups for PvE content based on class perceptions/stereotypes, and an SPvP pure team-fighter/support role.

My thoughts so far, which may be completely unfounded:

  • Elementalist - Seems a lot of buttons for mediocre results?
  • Thief - Looks great for PvP, but seems quite boring and unwanted in PvE due to lack of utility, and an easy/auto-attack based rotation.
  • Engineer - Probably my favourite "theme" as such; not sure how relevant they are end-game though.
  • Necromancer - Again, I love the theme of it, but read much about how poor it is end-game
  • Warrior - Across games, I just tend to hate this archtype, so never play them.
  • Guardian - Looks incredible, but the one person I play with is one... is class stacking a no-no?
  • Ranger - Another archtype I'm not a fan of; also seems that as Druid is meta, it'd be healer or nothing which doesn't appeal to me in GW2.
  • Revenant - Read a lot of comments about it being fairly irrelevant across the board.
  • Mesmer - Levelling one now; seems pretty good/fun tbh but not sure where it sits in terms of role.

Any advice please?

Mesmer is always great in every game mode and always needed in the high level end game stuff.

If you like engi, (which I do) the holosmith engi can crush it in pvp and end game stuff.

I can't say I'm super familiar with the others though I am starting to like the weaver alot. and I've not been a pvp playing in a while but do have a few friends who mainline holo engi in ranked and they do well.

mesmer is currently the best class in all gamemodes. Mirage (pof spec) sustain and mobility while having massive dmg Spikes make him dominating in wvw smallscale and sPvP. chrono boonshare( hot spec of mesmer) is best Support class in the game because he can cast all boons to the whole Group permanently and still good dmg on enemies make him great for pve.while Special skills like Focus 4 pull, vail, Portal and gravity (chrono Ulty) are very important and strong skills for wvw zergs.

anet also Shows that they dodging real nerfs to that (currently) most OP class. so his dominating role will last Long in future.

Your “ideal” class seems like;WarriorMesmerEngineer

WarriorYou said you hate this archetype, but Warrior fits in all gamemodes so consider it.

Has DPS and support (by carrying banners) role in PvE content.

Fits in sPvP with the Playmaker role. Warriors usually go to the far point and try to stall as many enemies as possible, roam a bit, take 1v1s etc. Might fit your playstyle with the Spellbreaker Elite Specialization.

Fits in WvW with roamer style or used as Bubblewarrior (comes from Spellbreaker’s Elite utility skill Winds of Disenchantment). Core Warrior is mostly used for WvW roaming and Spellbreaker is used for large fights.

MesmerMost consider Mesmer the best class. It is the best when it comes to 1v1s, solo roaming, incredible bursts, picking out the carry of the enemy. It is an easy to play hard to master type of class.

Has DPS (Chronomancer and Mirage) and support (Chronomancer) roles for PvE content.

Fits in sPvP with the roamer, +1 (supports teammates by ganking), and 1v1er roles.

Fits in WvW with the roamer, portalmes and Boonshare roles.

Engineer

Has DPS role only. Core Engineer and Holosmith are used.

Fits in sPvP by bruiser and damage-carry role. Mostly played as Conversion Holosmith, Static Discharge Holosmith (This is the carry build) or Bruiser Scrapper.

Fits in WvW by only roamer role. Has almost no use in group fights. Mostly played as Holosmith. Maybe has a place in large fights with a Conversion Scrapper support build.

I have to agree with majority of other responses here that Mesmer is probably what you’re looking for. Especially in the category of “wanting to be useful in all game modes”. The chronomancer (HoT elite spec for Mesmer) has got to be the one class that will improve any group, whenever I see one in my group of pugs for fractals I’m just like “yes! A chronomancer”

Ranger has the option to support or dps , u arent forced to be a Druid (plus druid healing is somewhat fun , isnt like healbot in ohter mmorpgs)

Elementalist has some support builds (tempest ) and dps role .

if u want to be the most usefull , go warrior or Chrono support , is unique and provides tons of support.

In a nutshell: No class stacking is not a big Nono, due to diversity of roles.-> if you get the expansions they differ even more.Level your mesmer and enjoy the guardian next.Guardian is very good in WvW, still decent in PvP and firebrand is welcome support in PvE and DH a good DPS CC option.
