While this is a bug, its hardly known at all to many players, and this thread is simply to spread awareness concerning a big problem with our profession.
As rangers we have several abilities and traits that give our pets quickness.
Quickening Zephyr
Zephyr’s Speed
“We Heal As One”
Fortifying Bond
+Strider’s Defense
+Instinctive Reaction
+Instinctive Engage
+Live Fast
But for those who don’t know, currently quickness will only increase the attack speed of regular attacks from devourer, spider, smokescale, bristleback or wyvern pets. On any other pet, quickness does not increase regular attack speed.
That’s 41 out of 52 of our pets that gain nothing from quickness!
I’ve only tested two of the new pets, the Sand Lion and Cheetah, and they aren’t affected either.
This further reduces the chances of people picking up pets that are already considered under powered compare to top tier pets.
In PvP our targets are obviously alot more mobile than PvE so getting hits in fast is VERY important. But the majority of our pets attack too slow and therefore don’t manage to hit anything for the most part, and quickness would help this quite abit.
Zephyr’s Speed is a great idea of a trait! Switch out your pet and give it quickness, allowing it to use those essential abilities like dazes and knockdowns right when you need them…except it fails to work when your pet doesn’t benefit from a powerful boon that your specialized in pumping out.
Its a MAJOR PROBLEM to anyone specializing in Beast Mastery, because it really hinders what we can pull off with our pet and with our Ranger as a whole. Putting traits into this line lowers our Rangers damage/survivability compare to other trait lines. And when you do throw your traits in here, you need that increased reaction time and damage, when your giving up so much. Those Taunts/Blinds with F2 are sometimes essential to get off. And when you have a Grandmaster trait that gives your pet such a powerful boon and it doesn’t even affect it, its extremely frustrating for one, underwhelming, and unhelpful.
I have been pushing this for ages, now please fix this Anet. Give our pets some love for once.
Comments
Agreed. It is quite unfortunate that so many pets are left out.
Let's hope that core specs don't get neglected even more so, with the upcoming specialisations. Soulbeast does eliminate this issue and many other issues with Pet AI, however, it doesn't solve the issues that have persisted for years.
The one glaring problem I see here is your focused on PVP only, there are multiple modes. The new elite spec is pretty strong if played right.
I think you posted in the wrong thread :S
As a person who almost exclusively plays PvE, I'm not too concerned personally, but I can see how this would be a problem in PvP and WvW, especially given that pets are supposed to be a certain percentage of the ranger's damage. (I think I read that it's like 30%. I could be wrong, and if I am, please correct me.) Also, as someone who does utilize the Beastmastery spec for the purpose of boosting my pets, that is problematic. At the same time, I can understand how difficult it would be to balance that out without making the pets TOO powerful. It'd be silly to have the NPC pet dole out more damage than the actual player.
Also, I know this isn't related, but since someone mentioned it, I'm excited to try soulbeast and see how it is. The preview during the PoF announcement seemed underwhelming, but I've heard good things from my guildmates. We'll see how it goes.
Gonna post here as i did in the old forums.
Please..please...rangers need their pets fixed so terribly bad that its not even funny, i Love my ranger, its been my main since this game came out, and im getting ready to park it for my thief because my thief can do more damage no matter what build i run on my ranger.
Ember Wandertooth(SB), Lucina Fallenflame(Weaver), Kianda Redpaw(Guardian), Kingslayer, Light in the Dark.
Why Guild Wars is called Guild Wars
I understand your pain, i want to use my ranger but when you use other classes like thief (i also do) you see how bad rangers have it. My ranger is full zerker and it takes ages to kill things, compare to others. I just dont feel it, today i wanted to do wvw with my ranger but i knew i was not going to do much in my raid, single target and no boons. All i was going to do was a rally boot most likely, is sad, anet rly need to look at rangers specially their weapons and damage/pets.
Please pleaseeeee fix this! So frustrating only being able to play a few of my pets
I want my wolf, but thanks to this bug he deals sooooo much less damage then those affected with quickness.
And yah, makes all those traits and skills so much less powerful too
I wonder if we will ever get an official response to this issue?
Seriously! I've been throwing this out there for years, both through forums and bug reports, and still not a word from them in response
On a sidenote tested out Jacaranda, and its the one on the only new pets that's affected.
Still dealing with this major problem
come on Anet wake up!
Ok all tested out with the new pets and Cheetah and Sand Lion are bugged and unaffected by quickness, while the other 3, Fanged Iboga, Jacaranda and Rock Gazelle are fine.
Still really need this fixed!
At least until they 'fix'-nerf the gazelle it is nice to utilize that it is a pet that works with quickness.
why? well usually the charge is so slow that it can't hit stuff. With quickening zephyr the charge is on steroids and one shots players before they even see the pet coming
Still really need this issue addressed.
Okay tested every single one individually and 39/55 pets are bugged.
Finally got a reply and theyre looking into it but they said it might be intentional...which makes zero sense considering a random handful are already affected and we have several traits/skills that specifically provide quickness to our pets that would obviously be worthless for the majority of our pets.
That may very well be one of the most stupid things I've heard yet on these forums. I'm pretty sure that response is because they don't want to put in the work to fix it.
What strange times we live in.

Indeed
just got this back today
"Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I will forward this information to the appropriate team for them to look in to it. If this is intended, then you will just need to keep posting on the forums as that is the best way to get the attention of the developers. Members of the Development Team read the forums daily, and while they usually cannot respond to individual suggestions, the fact that team members can review those suggestions in a public forum helps them gauge the level of interest in a particular idea, and also allows other players to discuss and offer feedback of their own. "
Apparently posting about this in the forums over multiple treads and topics, reporting bugs in-game every patch, and reporting to the support site numerous times over more than 2 years just isn't enough....keep up the posting then i guess? :P I know I'll be darn sure to post a bug report every week if not every day now, maybe that'll wake em up?
What in the bloody hell did I just read?!?
Maybe now they have a tool that look at how much thread are open on the same subject, how many customer answer to it and then give statistical data to the dev so that they know on what they should work?
You read a spin, worded to give themselves some wiggle room.
PET PRECISION & DPS DATA
"Back in Black... Desert Online."
Yup just gotta keep blasting them with posts (that they delete...) and send them bug reports (they ignore)!
Goodjob Anet keep it up! Not.
Keep fightin' the good fight, Johnny.
PET PRECISION & DPS DATA
"Back in Black... Desert Online."
Just gonna bump this.
I am monitoring this thread. Was completely unaware of this as I had never explored a pet boon build, thank you for bringing it to mine and other players attention. Will confirm this tonight and fill out a bug report.
Still no change, what a disappointment
Got a thread up in the bug forums if anyone wants to bump
https://en-forum.guildwars2.com/discussion/569/pets-not-affected-by-quickness#latest
Please fix this! I have been playing since GW1 and I find it super frustrating!
Quickness on devs is bugged too, that's why they are so slow to fix this.
Froudo // Judge Legends [JDGE] // Seafarer's Rest
That's for sure :P
Did you even read the post????
and I quote " This further reduces the chances of people picking up pets that are already considered under powered compare to top tier pets.
In PvP our targets are obviously alot more mobile than PvE so getting hits in fast is VERY important. But the majority of our pets attack too slow and therefore don’t manage to hit anything for the most part, and quickness would help this quite abit. "
They are talking about PVP please go back and read main post, and have a nice day.
They are talking pets mainly, regardless of gamemode. Its not a pvp thread its not a pve thread, its a thread about a massive bug that contradicts the boon choices they gave to ranger and the interaction it has with pets. Even if OP gives PvP examples its affecting every part of the game. It should be fixed immediatly for all pets.
Reddit AMA today, time to raise this question there again I guess!
Froudo // Judge Legends [JDGE] // Seafarer's Rest
Please do!
Lets do it too.
Not "they. "You/Me". Yes "I" read it -
"The one glaring problem I see here is your focused on PVP only, there are multiple modes. The new elite spec is pretty strong if played right."
Did you read the post? xD If you did read my main post you'll see I'm speaking about all types of gameplay and I simply gave a small example in PvP. Futhermore you bring up "the new elite spec" for some unknown reason... we're talking about pets being bugged on core ranger and all its specializations, not the specific flaws of Soulbeast, which is why it seemed like you posted in the wrong thread.
Welp, I posted in the AMA asking if they are aware of this issue and added a link to this topic. Gaile replied something about asking around, but I'm guessing the original message Johnny got was from her as well? I will bring up the question again in the next AMA in a few months time I guess.
Froudo // Judge Legends [JDGE] // Seafarer's Rest
HAAAAAHAAAAHAAAA !
Nah, never got a message from her :S
She told you to ask around if THEY'RE aware of the issue????? xD The F????
Well, it's only been bugged since 2012, so another few months isnt't going to matter much I guess... Anyway, communication from the devs in this company is about as bad as it gets.
No no, I think she meant she was going to go and snoop around asking if anyone's in the office is aware of it.
Froudo // Judge Legends [JDGE] // Seafarer's Rest
I'll ping directly today. Sorry for the delay!

I have to say, I'm really happy with the attention being given on the forums lately. Keep it up. Thanks for looking into this.
Are you people absolutely certain it doesn't work all the time? Because it looks to me like my pets attacks are faster when I use Quickness, but then again, maybe those white numbers flashing across the screen at a faster rate don't mean anything at all(this is specifically with the Jacaranda that I notice it, don't pay attention to the others really).
Yes...no...maybe...what do you want, can't you see I'm busy saving the world...AGAIN!
Your eyesight is ok, Jacaranda is not bugged. The following pets are working as intended: Armor Fish, Bristleback, Carrion Devourer, Fanged Iboga, Jacaranda, Rock Gazelle, Shark, Smokescale, Black Widow Spider, Cave Spider, Forest Spider, Jungle Spider, Electric Wyvern, Fire Wyvern, Lashtail Devourer, Whiptail Devourer
Whereas these are bugged: -Arctodus -Black Bear -Brown Bear -Murellow -Polar Bear -Eagle -Hawk -Owl -Raven -White Raven -Alpine Wolf -Fern Hound -Krytan Drakehound -Wolf -Hyena -Ice Drake -Marsh Drake -Reef Drake -River Drake -Salamander Drake -Jaguar -Jungle Stalker -Snow Leopard -Tiger -Cheetah -Lynx -Sand Lion -Blue Jellyfish -Rainbow Jellyfish -Red Jellyfish -Black Moa -Blue Moa -Pink Moa -Red Moa -White Moa -Boar -Pig -Siamoth -Warthog

I see your point then, it basically affects the ones that are mostly used vs not working on the least used pets, which explains why I've never noticed the problem. In that case I think it should be fixed...then the only reason Rangers wouldn't use certain pets is because of their lack of effectiveness, which is another topic.
Yes...no...maybe...what do you want, can't you see I'm busy saving the world...AGAIN!
Thank-you. But what does this mean exactly??
I'm also very confused on if this is the first your hearing of this. Your the Communications Manager so I'd think you'd probably have the best answer here, and I don't mean any disrespect but how is this taking so long, and whats been going on??
The issue itself has been here since launch, and just speaking on my part alone, I've been addressing this issue to you for 4 years with:
Now I'm clearly not the only one here reporting this issue, alot of people here I'm sure have been spamming you. But based on me alone, how on earth is it taking you guys so long, not only to actually fix the issue, but for your team to actually be aware of it?? I mean, I'm basically screaming this is your faces where ever you look, haha.
Honestly I've just been so disappointed in you guys its not even funny. The support I've gotten has been appalling as I'm sure most people here can agree. But regardless I still love playing the game, but this issue has really been frustrating me as a Ranger-Main for ages. So I'd really like to see this fixed, as well as get an answer to my above questions.
What that meant was that although I've been aware of this for years, too -- I'm a Ranger main, after all
-- I still didn't have traction on a detailed answer, although I knew it was a known issue and I'd spoken with devs about it before. If you check forum archives -- we don't have an archive of the old forums, but others have been kind enough to host them on third-party sites -- you can confirm that this is not my first post on this subject. (I imagine other knowledgeable forum members will vouch for me here.
)
Certainly, you are not the only person reporting this, but what I learned today has a bit more detail: Fixing this will be a complicated correction to make, because quickness can cause animation problems (presumably for some species, which is why this is not a unilateral/every creature problem). Each pet will need to be examined individually for these problems, and at the present time, this is not something that the designers are able to do. Again, this is a known issue -- I have that from several different people -- and this is a concern. Reading the details on this, quite honestly I personally do not foresee this being corrected in the very near future, as much as I know the team would like to be able to do so. However, that's my estimation, not a dev answer, and I will see if I can learn more and update when I have additional info.

I don't see it being corrected in the very near future either if this issue has been known to the team for years.
Had the slightest glimmer of hope, after all these years we finally got a response. I should have known better after all this disappointment.
After making it very clear that the team has just been shrugging off a bug like this to the core mechanic of a whole profession, I understand how little you really care now.
You've lost my support.
I feel like this would be an especially ripe time to point out that the pet animation locking problems date all the way back to GW1, and they were a major issue for rangers even then.
That's right, this issue is 12 years old, it was never fixed, GW2 inherited when it used a modified GW1 engine, the design team 5 years ago decided to make an entire class based on it anyway, and today they are covering up the problem by selectively breaking certain pets that would show otherwise off the flaw.
This is why people don't trust your game design.
I would very much like to see what these animation issues looks like - video of it please? And speaking of animations, they don't seem that important, just take a look at Soulbeast skill Tail Swipe (that you claimed you fixed in the October 17th, 2017 update but you called it 'Tail Spin' there) - it has no animation at all!
Improving Pet animations, CD, skills and general usability would be beneficial for the whole class. IMO all rangers would like to see an update to their classmechanic instead of tweaking traits and skills atm because its the issue that is the longest due and is the most outdated.
Thank you gaile for answering and please remind the balance and bug team to look into the soulbeast bug report.
PS: This improved communication is great, we know we dont get all we want but atleast we got some approval that things get noticed.
