HOPE collection locked behind event failures.

Getting more than a little bit annoyed with the Catalyst part of HOPE. The Gift of the Catalyst requires the soul battery be charged with the Legendary Risen High Wizard's soul.

The issue? The High Wizard does not spawn with the defense. You have to get a new, fresh map instance in order to get the Assault phase event to get him to spawn. I know that there are a few events that got updated with the necessity of the legendary component drops to spawn the particular enemy required.

I've waited a few days, each time waiting 2 hours for the defense to pop, since you almost never get a new Orr Map instance unless it is on daily achievements, and even then it is rare to see more than 2 maps running concurrently. I have tried a few times, unsuccessfully, to spawn a new map instance by taxiing people in to force an overflow. I really would love to complete this legendary, and want to get it done. I only have the Catalyst part left. All other parts are waiting on this. Any help or tips would be appreciated.

I remember reading about the wizard when I was doing my collection for HOPE, Although I was lucky I want to quote this anyways:"There are two versions of this defense event: one where the Risen High Wizard spawns, and one where he doesn't. I've done this event specifically and I joined a map knowing this may happen. To my luck he spawned.Try to join a map on the peak hours and hope for the best.

This is something I also don't understand.From what the wiki says it sounds like a random event that may occur if everything goes according to plan(like it usually does if the events don't fail)

Its weird as it is but I remember killing this mob in the past multiple times and I also remember completing this event without the wizard spawning at all.

When I was doing HOPE literally everything was based on luck for me and by everything I mean everythingAlso including the Champion Branded Devourer Queen that hides behind bugged events. I believe if any of its previous events fail it will not spawn at all and I also had to kill it alone and cheese it.I stood against plenty of difficulties but I can assure you the high wizard was not a problem at all.

When I was going to obtain this item I didn't start from the beginning I actually went to the first camp before you enter arah and people just joined me slowly until we had enough to complete it.

Then again try to join in the peak hours so you don't waste your time

The Wizard spawns during the defense event and has for some time. Unless he was taken out recently or is glitched. I know for sure the last time I was there (perhaps a month or two ago) that he spawned during the defense event. He should walk out of the gate as soon as the event starts; maybe you're missing him because you're getting there after he's dead?

Ugh, don't get me started. I'm also doing this and issues with completion have been very frustrating. Missing one because M-PEC buff is lost after downed, the champ quaggan that also only spawns after a failed pre-event (had to yell at someone to please let it fail), trying to do those jps and adventures with Australian ping, Vinetooth Prime, etc etc. They could have put a bit more thought into these. Of course the mats you need to complete it even after all this is another issue entirely.Forgot to mention that a lot of the events are very hard to complete when you're in a non-prime time zone. Doubt I'll ever try another 2nd gen legendary again.

  • Nevermore
  • H.O.P.E.
  • Astralaria
  • Chuka & Champawat

The later ones don't have collections, they're pure material sinks.

I think there's some confusion around what's going on.

  • The wizard can spawn with defense. There are two events (two different event IDs in the API): one with The Wiz; one without.
  • Defense occurs more often, starting 30 minutes after a successful assault and then ... I think every 20 minutes after that (but maybe it's every 30)
  • After a failed defense, there's a two hour cooldown before an assault attempt starts again. If that fails, it's 30 minutes before another starts.

ANet has said that they have adjusted this in the past & I know that they wiki hasn't always been updated after such a change. So it might have changed again, to make it easier still.


The main things that they haven't changed (or even talked about changing): the super long cooldown on assault, after losing the temple(s) and any sort of in-game indicator as to how long a wait remains. Personally, I like that the events aren't tied to the clock, but I think it's inexcusable at this stage of the game that we don't know if we're waiting 5, 10, 15, or 120 minutes.

Even some sort of series of micro-events during the cooldown would help, e.g. if it's 30 minutes or less, "the Pact is preparing to retake" and when it's 10 minutes or less, "the Pact has nearly completed preparations". If it's 120 minutes, it could be, "the Pact forces are in tatters and have retreated to base to regroup." And so.

I did those collections fairly recently. There are a few events that are kind of tricky to get/potentially frustrating...From step 3 - The Champ Flame Effigy can be easy to miss, but spawns relatively often. Tail of the Star God took me quite a bit of grawlslaying.Step 4 - Temple of Dwayna, like all the temples, is unpredictable. Eye of Zhaitan isn't actually necessary - defend Gates of Arah and you'll get both its item and the Risen High Wizard's.

I can't comment on when the Wizard does or does not spawn but I had a similar problem making The Lover because at the time you needed to cleanse the Temple of Dwayna to progress the collection because the item was in the Glorious Chest which only spawned after taking over the temple. (It's been changed now but at the time both defence events did not work, which I found out the hard way doing them both multiple times.)

What worked for me was guesting to a low population server at a busy time of day. I know guesting is largely forgotten about now and popular opinion is it does absolutely nothing since mega-servers were introduced, but in this case it worked for me. Your server is supposed to have an impact on which copy of the map you get put into (IF there's enough maps for there to be a choice) so I suspect guesting from a full server to a low population one shifted me from being grouped with a large group of people to a smaller one and therefore put me into a new map where the temple was contested. I asked in map chat after I arrived (the Dwayna temple events involve escorting a very slow NPC so there was plenty of time to chat) and there was no one from my home server, several people from the one I'd guested to and they all said they'd only been on the map a few minutes and the temple was contested when they arrived which makes me think it was a new map.

The other thing which might work is using the LFG tool to ask for a taxi to a map where the temple is contested. Although you may have to deal with people who don't read it properly, join and then complain that you're looking for a taxi instead of proving one.

Oh and make sure you submit a bug report so Anet knows they still haven't fixed this collection. Tell them which legendary you're making, which item you need and which events you've done that didn't drop it. It probably won't be fixed quickly so you'll need to find a work-around still, but it means they can fix it in future.

The quaggan champ was pure luck for me honestlyI was waiting on this map only 5 minutes and it spawnedLuckly for me another guy joined the fight against it.

But from what it looks like it I think all 4 collections have an item you have to collect from an event that its pre event must failNevermore included, which is one of the reasons I have a dilemma choosing whether to continue doing it or not.Fortunately the rest of the gen 2 besides the first 4 are easy to obtain. Just about to finish HMS divinity and it only took me a month :smile:

What was very frustrating was that some of the collection items require "activating" something before completing the event/kill which you have to make sure you remember.

The M-PEC buff also seems to be the only one lost when you're downed. What made this even more frustrating was the one I missed because of this was the champion arrowhead. I then immediately killed it again but still didn't get the collection item because it seems to be tied to the chest for that event which only drops once daily and I'd already gotten it on the previous kill when I'd lost the buff. I had to do it again the next day.

I don't know if this is intended or just an oversight.

Thank you all for the insight with my issue as well as all of yours. I did wait at the Narthex 2 hours in a row, and no event popped for all that time. When the defense arrived, there was no Wizard. I left that night, came back on over 20 hours later to a defense event that also had no Wizard. I was a little irritated, but stayed there still, idling and watching videos on other achievements, when at 30 minutes another defense came along, this time with a Wizard. I put the LFG up in squad, had about 27 people join almost instantly, and when we successfully killed him, about a dozen or so folks linked the respective items they needed in Local and Map chats. I felt rather delighted and relieved that my own ordeal was over, and that I was able to help a lot of other folks because of what you all had suggested.

Thanks for you rehash of your frustrations with the M-PEC. I had the same thing happen to me with the Champ Arrowhead and was at a loss to figure out what to do next.

These collections do have one positive aspect. They really make you appreciate the GW2 community and the willingness of players to help out with these quests.

This is why I didn't start HOPE, I still remember that BannerSlave with Orr bosses for Astralaria.In short, in order for Wizard in Arah to spawn, it has to be fresh assault, going from pres to Promenade, trough killing Eye,then Wizard on the top.What was happening this days of events rush, people were camping Arah gate and quickly dealing with event that could close the gate.

Except they changed it, so you get credit for defense too.

This is what is happening when people just like the complain and don't do five seconds of research. The wizard has a chance to spawn at the start of the defense event. That is happening for years now.
