Couldn't Change Weapon in PvP

Today I went into the first PvP match I've ever done.

I'm a Revenant, and I unlocked Renegade. Pew pew shooty bow guy, k? It's important.

I go into the match and in the pre match skirmish thingy, I can't use my bow. I see the skills on my action bar, but can't use it. Weird. So I switch to my sword and axe. I can use them now? Alright. Let's switch back to my bow.

presses ~

Nothing.

presses ~ again

Nothing.

Oookay. presses H. Short bow is still equipped...Hmm...

Let's check my abili- what? Dwarf was changed into...something. Let's press it. Oh wow, I never unlocked Herald. Weird. Let's change it back to Renegade pew pew guy.

-UNABLE TO CHANGE WHATEVER DURING PVP MATCH, LOL GOTEEM- comes across my screen or whatever it said, you get the gist. Frustrated, I try to leave the match.

16 minute timeout, for being, quite literally, FORCED to play with ONE WEAPON, and a skillset I have never used before?

Anet, you've outdone yourself this time. Bravo.

Erm...im pretty sure you can change your skills so long as you arent in combat in PVP cause i had to do the same thing the other day when i just jumped into a pvp match with my ele that id never taken into pvp before, and in the open world they where a weaver, so when i entered i still had my sword equipped, but couldnt use it as you did, but it definitely allowed me to change my traits/skills.

I have the idea you didn't set up your pvp build (which is different to your pve one). To set it up go to the pvp lobby, click the build icon on top of your screen. Place the build you want to use (I assume the weapon was elite profession specific?), choose the runes and sigils you want to use and you should be good to go :). You only have to set your pvp build once, so you don't have to enter pvp lobby every time.

P.s pvp always scales you to level 80 with all specialisation unlocked (if you owe all expansions).

I wasnt in combat, I was in the staging area behind the gate

This is true. However, the short time you have to setup your build pré match is rather short hence I advise to do so in pvp lobby as you have all the time of the world there and you can try it out on the golems or others if you wish :)

Once the match is started you cannot change anything anymore, regardless if you are in combat or not. You can only change it before the match starts (when you have x period of time to say youre ready basically)

I think there should be some kind of warning or not letting you queue until you go to the pvp lobby and check your build if it's your first time ever doing PvP

To go over a few points:

  • Every class you make and bring to pvp will be boosted to level 80 and will have everything unlocked without the need for hero points or levelling.
  • each game mode being WvW, PvP and PvE uses different build templates, so if you make a PvE build in PvE then go to PvP and change your build, when you go back to PvE your build will be as you left. Each game mode has different builds that will work better.
  • once the match has started, you can not change your abilities or skills, its best to set up in the PvP lobby first.
  • leaving mid match is a very bad thing as you put 9 other players out for your actions, everyone qued to that game, not just you.

That said, welcome to PvP ?Try not to let this experience discourage you as it can be quite fun to battle it out with other players, Guild Wars 2 has a very engaging combat system after all.
