Would it be possible to brink back the old "Pip" System Ranking?

The new system is really bad imo, because of the win/lose ratio you get... Like you can win 6-10 points in 1 game and after you have won 2-3 games you get about 18~23 points and once you lose 1 game its -23~26 so it brings you back down really far so I find it really frustrating. So I would rather have the pip ranking system back then this.

So could we get a answer for this from ANet?

  • honestly rating gain is weird to me . Got really bad luck this last season into placement games 3 W - 7 L => silver 3 (I was plat 1)

then chain winning ... gaining less and less pts every win and not even gold 2 yet ... what's is this rating system anet?

Old pips were better in that situation with the chain win / loss.

The rating system is better than pips, the problem is that at least this season it seems like the rating system almost refuses to allow you to climb quickly.

That's because the first ~10 matches after placements always have more value than normal matches. And imo it kinda makes sense because like this you can correct the result of your placements a but. E.g. you get super unlucky placements and get placed way below your normal rating, then you can quickly farm a lot of rating to come to where you belong.

Is there a point to have placement games though then. If you get unlucky in placements, you can also get unlucky in the 5 following games. Luck has no impact upon 100 games, but surely can have upon 15.
If you tell me the 10 games following placement are made to correct the result of the placement, then the placement makes no sense.

You win some, you lose some. And rating gain or loss is based on which players are you facing.
If you lose 3x than what you gain, its frustrating yes, but means your rating vs enemy rating equals a roughly 3:1 w/l ratio, and if you want to increase your rating overall you need to improve that ratio, or play in prime time vs players of equal skill.

If you can’t accept you’re not always going to climb then you don’t have the nerves for rankings.

Pip system was a meme, where legendary meant “I grinded a bit this season and im not a complete newbie”.

Hell no! The pip system was atrocious.
The pip system works either one of two ways, both of which are terrible:
    1. If you match players based on pips and not rating, then you end up with mostly blow-out matches even until the end of the season as players spread out from 0 pips. Because pips are zero-sum except at boundaries, adding new pips to the system to push the top farther out takes significant time.
    2. If you match with rating, then it becomes near impossible to advance in pips. When you're matched at your rating, you win ~50% of games, which means in a +1/-1 pip system for win/loss, your net movement in pips is zero. That means bronze and platinum skilled players will be at the same pip level.

The rating systems works the same in placement as it does afterwards. The "placement" matches are just a facade - one with good reason. During the first few matches of a season and especially if you've never been rated before, the rating adjustments will be significantly larger - possibly over 100 points - than once you've played a few games. Image if people saw such a huge swing after a single game - they'd freak out, even though it makes perfect sense.

well actually I was platinum last season and for the last 5 seasons so ... I got placed silver 3 this season ... then chain wins after placement but winning like less and less point every game ... does that mean i belong to silver while always been placed plat before? Weird to me to be honest.

No it means you had bad start, thats all.

    Youre consistently 1500+.
You play bad start and place 1200.
You start climbing but it slows down as you approach 1500.

    I dont see a problem.
Youre not sub 1000 afk player, and youre not top10 legendary at 1800.

Youre placed accurately in the very chaotic middle ranks.

That's the problem with the GW2 system, it has diminishing returns in it... Because it's based more on the difference between MMR than the match outcome, it becomes really hard to climb even if you're winning. Also the fact that it might take out 3x more points than you make in a win when you lose is also weird. I mean, if the Match maker is supposedly doing teams that are overall well within the same global MMR, why the hell do i lose 20 points in a loss, and earn 7 in a win?
That, plus their "seasons" which honestly, are a month, it should be called PvP month, not season. People feel more frustrated because of burn out.
You have to play more intensively in GW2 than other games, because it has the shortest seasons i've seen in a competitive game type, the game isn't healthy at all, which makes winning or losing a bit more random than actual skill, and then the system excessively punishes you for even a close loss.
It's been 4 years since it was released, and it's just getting worse, and the less players in it, because most will burn out, the more plain those pains are, especially with the match making.

Me, i've stopped playing sPvP a year ago. Its sad, because even though i wasn't a "PvP player", i played regularly enough and enjoyed it, especially playing with my friends.
Honestly, sPvP is dead, but they refuse to take it out life support. If they can't fix it, they should at least pull the plug on it, as it is, it's just making the rest of the game worse by leeching out man-power and affecting skill balance negatively on other game modes.

I had a rough time with placements as well this season, 4-6 or 3-7, can't remember. Been plat 1-2 the last 3 seasons, got placed into gold 1 this time around.

I'm back at 1497 after 110 matches. I should honestly be well into plat now, but I lost sight of the most important aspect of climbing the ladder: queue discipline. I leaned pretty hard into a losing streak in the hopes of turning it around, when I should have cut my losses much earlier. Once I went back to satisfying myself with 1-2 net wins per day, the climb has been smooth sailing.

This is something I'd really like to see change - I understand that some new folks really want faster seasons back to back to farm their backpieces and ascended/legendary gear, but it's so exhausting as someone who's already done all that.

I play pretty much just to keep a plat badge on my name - to be completely honest, I'd be super happy if we could keep the previous season's badge on if we haven't finished placements for the current one. That way I could at least sit out every other season; I get to keep my shiny little badge and the new folks can work at grinding out their achieves/collections.
