Returning player with legacy account, looking for content and guidance.

I've recently returned to the game, I have a level 80 character, but I don't have any expansions. I plan to get them in the future, but I was wondering if there was anything I could be doing now until then. I havn't done much past getting to lvl 80 and I dont have any experience with endgame content. Im looking to get some decent gear and finish leveling a profession before I decide to upgrade my account., that way I dont feel too far behind when I get into it. Id like to do some pvp, and from what I'm seeing, most of that is available to me, but if there was some PVE content I could get involved in for practice that would be great.
