warrior or guardian, and best dps spec

hi all, im currently playing on a reaper and soulbeast and have decided to give it a shot on a melee class, particularly on gsword build (i have medium and light, and would want a heavy armor class). i have struggled on ranger's survivability but doing well on a reaper (axe/horn + gsword) thus far...

after readings and research, i have decided to roll a warrior... (mostly core or berserker?) or maybe a guardian DH... im mostly on open world/story/fracs/spvp.

also looking for a build with gsword, preferably dps berserker stats...as both my necro and ranger are using berserker stats... please advise if there is another better build for power warrior.. (im not into condition)..thanks.

The Berserker Elite Spec for warrior is best suited for condition damage. So if you want to play power, Core Warrior or Spellbreaker is the better choice.
I run Spellbreaker on my warrior, using Axe-Dagger/Greatsword, there’s bound to be a build you can follow on Metabattle or Snowcrows.

The above was written as part of an attempt to waste time.

Greatsword for pve damage is generally only run on guardian.

The warrior spellbreaker build mostly uses great sword only as movement or additional damage set. The main physical damage weapon set for warrior is axe/axe, often combined with mace/mace for cc bar break.

Warrior berserker specialization is for condition damage in pve. Sword+Torch and Longbow being the weapons of choice.

Now this is all only relating to meta builds for group content. If you just want to free build for open world and story, go with what you want.

I main core warrior (banner support AKA banner slave) with axe / axe and mace / mace. I use a slightly different version of the same build in solo.

Basically Strength / Discipline / Tactics for group content with Banner of Discipline / Strength. I replace Tactics with Arms for solo content and Defence is a good option if you have survivability issues as well. You want Berserker and Assassin pieces - exact pieces differ per content but I'd just gear for either raids or fractals, depending on which one you care about more, and try to slowly get more trinkets to get a better-suited Precision in the other content.

I almost never use gs on warrior. It's meh. I mean, it is a good weapon but doesn't feel as good as axe/axe. I'm sure it'd be ok to replace mace/mace in solo with gs. I do like the easily accessible CCs with maces.

For Guardian, I strongly suggest Dragon Hunter. Much easier to gear and pretty powerful. You want all berserker stats for that. Great sword - scepter / focus work pretty well. While learning, DH can be difficult to survive but once it clicks, it is one of the lawnmower professions.

Thanks guys for sharing, so if I only want GS as main weapon, Guardian DH would better utilize this weapon compare to a warrior? I thought I’ve seen a lot of suggestion on a warrior build with gs / A+A...hmmmm

How about the survivability between these 2? I played the ranger and struggled to survive at the beginning...well compared to the necro..

Depends on the build, nothing will come close to necromancer survivability wise initially. Necromancer is built from a class design standpoint very tanky, meaning inexperienced players will have the easiest time on it.

If survivability is your goal, I would recommend checking out the metabattle open world builds https://metabattle.com/wiki/Open_World. Those are designed so that people can play them with less role optimization in mind by adding decent defensive skills.

The crux of most group meta builds is, they are built around a group composition and as such will bring excellent damage, boon support or healing, but usually not all at once. That leaves many group meta damage builds quite vulnerable when played solo.

In general the greatsword is not a terrible weapon on a warrior, but it's not all to great either (for pure pve).

I would probably say warrior is better to survive.
Especially if you are using the Spellbreaker E-Spec, because it comes with a block as class mechanic that you can use every 8 seconds (if you have the necessary adrenalin).
In addition base HP at 80 of Warrior is 19212 and base HP of Gurdian is 11645

Ok so a greatsword is much better used on a guardian DH than a warrior, in every sense?

Thanks, care to elaborate more on spellbreaker ‘e-spec’?

19212 is almost doubled of 11645.....hmmm...

  • Looks like dragon hunter is what I’m looking for (greatsword and berserker dps), but can someone share which class is actually more fun to play (I know it’s subjective) between a warrior and DH

  • Shivvies.3921Shivvies.3921 Member ✭✭✭

Yes. Greatsword is a really, really good weapon for Guardian but mediocre for Warrior.

I would say warrior survivability is higher in general too but it is a combination of HP, Mending, combat movement speed, etc. I dislike spellbreaker but it is a personal thing. Spellbreaker e-spec means "spellbreaker elite specialisation" - the PoF spec for warrior. It does hve a block as class mechanic but it is more of a ramp up class than core warrior in terms of DPS (or I'm kitten with it, dunno) so especially in solo I'd go with core warrior with axe / axe to be honest.

thanks.. even GS on a spellbreaker is mediocre? pair with A/A, or you mean i will end up using A/A most of the time... ?

And what about a core power build? With GS and Axe + shield? Full Zojja stats...

I mean, if you already have a greatsword, it could be alright to try gs - axe / shield. But yeah, I'm pretty sure you'll end up using axe more.

If you really want the shield as a defensive option, I'D PERSONALLY go with axe/axe -empty/shield so when you swap it is axe/shield. Or even better, mace/shield for the Mace3 and Mace surge skill. With quick hands, you get a 5-second cooldown on your weapon swap.

In all honesty, greatsword is not BAD at all. It is just not good enough to focus on even if you have a legendary greatsword to be honest.

    Exotic weapons do the job.

Anyways, here is a more damage orientated Core Warrior Build you can check.

Here is the same build with some more survivability.

There are other ways to go about the same thing but this one gives you an acceptable crit chance with fury, some good damage and utility. Note, though, I'd personally do not use shield and just use axe/axe - mace/mace.

You can also switch ALL berserker pieces with marauder if you are not interested in group stuff like fractals and such (in that case I'd change the runes and sigils as well) for a sizeable HP boost. I dislike using stat points for that since I do not think it adds much in pve but hey, the option is there.

thanks for sharing, so in summary the greatsword is not an important weapon for a warrior despite whatever build, its more of a utility weapon for mobility which an exotic could do the job.

compared to the guardian (DH), the greatsword is main weapon and almost mandatory.

correct me if im wrong, thanks :)

The best way I can explain the difference of GS on Warrior vs Guardian is:

Warrior is a single target weapon (except for Blade Trail if you position correctly to hit multiple targets).

Guardian is AoE with pulls and combos.

thanks... and hundred blades? which is supposed to be the main dps skill right?

actually aside from greatsword build... which class is more fun to play for open world frac raids? i prefer something with less buttons and also something that can sort of buff my ally (heal etc)...

    That is my take, yes.

As for hundred blades, it is good as long as your enemy doesn't move an inch.

As for fun, it is pretty subjective - both classes are fun in different ways, both can do what you are saying (buffing allies) and Guardian can be a good healer with completely different gear. I prefer warrior and find it much more fun though, it feels quick, fluid, very forgiving of mistakes.

    Cheers.

I do agree with you that the warrior feels quicker and fluid especially when I compare hundred blades and dh’s Gs2 feels slow....

I used to main Warrior but now prefer Firebrand. It's true, Greatsword is a bit lackluster( but is still fine) for Warrior in pve (good for WVW). If warrior had a pull skill to group up mobs like Guardian Greatsword, it'd be a great IMO. I like dagger/axe and may switch Greatsword for some other weapon combo instead, but Sunrise matches my warriors theme.

Firebrand is just awesome and I highly recommend, but is more button pushing than Warrior. Mobility sucks compared to warrior, but for open world I'd recommend Travelers rune (not optimal for Fractals/Raids, but more so in Raids)

I use Superior Sigil of Rage on my GS that procs on Crits whenever off the icd. Also some of the Warrior GS skills lock your movement and break the skills if you do.

In the HoT/PoF maps there is a lot of AoEs you need to dodge. Wings of Resolve give you a 25% speed boost when off cool down which was a welcome change.

thanks and yes i noticed from the videos there is a leap on f2 but i don't get it on mine... is that a DH skill? as i have not collected enough to start a DH (still on guardian)... and care to share which meditation skills has a teleport? and also which core x2 gives swiftness....

  • For your requiremenrs power dragonhunter, power quickbrand and power core warrior are all good choices.
Both guardian builds plays very similar (but diferent goals) and use gs. Warrior use gs for dps or maces for cc. In high fractals, its main job od mmf warrior to cc so gs might not be ideal there.

You can check nike youtube video for openworld quickbrand and warrior ig you like the playstyle.
