Toughness in WvW / PvP

I just recently started playing on my guardian who has a lot more toughness and armor than my ranger but I still seem to get hit for really big numbers.Is it worth investing into toughness in these game modes or is it better to focus on way to outright prevent the damage rather than reduce it?

Depends on whether you're getting hit mostly by direct or Condi damage. Toughness only mitigates direct where Condi bypasses it.

Mostly physical damage. I have enough condition clears to deal with conditions well enough.Does it really make a big difference to physical damage?

Some classes are just OP right now. That may change with the upcoming balance patch but you should be running around 2.5k-3k toughness. You have access to alot of blinds and blocks which help also.

2.5-3K toughness is in the supertank traited warrior territory, few others can achieve that much.

In WvW I dont recommend beyond 1400-1800, it wont help much more unless you get it for "free" (ie running full minstrel or trailblazer and similar). But it can actually help sustain a fair bit. Full zerker is just begging to get slaughtered by sustain. Even a hybrid build at 1800 toughness can have alot of damage.
