Newb question: How to upgrade Runes?

Recommended Posts

With various pieces of armor/weapons there will be attached a specific major/minor rune, which will have various attributes (such as X power, Y vitality, Z condition damage, etc.)

However, on many of these, the attributes are greyed out. What do you need to apply to the rune to "open up" or upgrade those runes so that the attributes are available and no longer greyed out?

Thanks in advance.

Do you remember how diablo set bonuses work?

GW2 runes work on the same principle. The more of that rune you have equipped in your armor, the more of those bonuses you unlock.

The rune has to the same exact kind. Mixing rarities will not work. So to have all 6 bonuses for an exotic rune, you need to equip 6 of that exotic rune.

Just remember that the aqua-breather replaces the helmet while underwater instead just being a visual replacement like outfits for some inexplicable reason, so for the head you'd need two of that rune, one in the helmet, one in the aquabreather, so it still works while underwater.

To get each (#) bonus, you need that many identical runes. For example,

  • Minor Rune of Balthazar: the (2) +4% burning duration applies with two Minor Runes of Balthazar equipped (any more of the same runes will do nothing)
  • Major: the (4) +9% burning duration applies with four Majors equipped (any fifth of sixth will do nothing)
  • Super: the (6) +20% burning duration (etc) applies with six Supers equipped

For more, see the wiki:Runeor from in game, type /wiki rune
