Placements

Just a little reminder of how crucial those placement matches are. In-game you don't get to see your rating fluctuate, but you can see just how many points you gain and lose during placements through GW2efficency. If you're gonna rage or afk over something petty, make sure you wait until after placements, as you will lose a lot less rating.

Placements aren't crucial. You can have rotten luck and get placed in gold 1 and as long as you're good you can climb to the top.

This is how it's supposed to work and it works fine.

The rating system adjustments are based on well it's predicting the outcome of your match. The more confident that the system is in your placement, the lower the rating adjustments. If you lose a few matches initially (maybe due to a disconnect), but then win matches you aren't expected to win, the amount of adjustment decreases less with each match. In the end, an anomalous result in placements may give you a slightly lower rating initially, but the adjustments are still relatively large and if you are improperly placed, you can quickly and easily overcome it.

ya... placements are kitten stupid lol.

4-6 in placements solo que on the first day, Ended up in 1348 rating(gold2). Ended the Season at 1700 rating....

Currently at 1600 rating now but holy god how placements make such an impact if you dont win the first 3 games.

But also while you are doing your placements, other people in the match may not be.

Your current 1600 rating is more likely due to the partial rating reset ANet does every season. That partial reset stacks up people closer to the middle. Until the population to spreads out through most of the population playing many games, you won't reach your end-of-season rating.

    Some interesting data:

29.7% of the players who placed in the top half of gold (1350-1499) finished the season in plat or higher. Highest Finish: 1843
7.5% of the players who placed in the bottom half of gold (1200-1349) finished the season in plat or higher. Highest Finish: 1802
1.1% of the players who placed below gold (0-1199) finished the season in plat or higher. Highest Finish: 1680
Lowest placement to hit plat: 686

I didn't say it wasn't possible to climb. It's more of an informative thread that states you can reduce the amount of climbing necessary if you don't botch your first few matches.

If you're placed higher than you deserve to be then this system is great for putting you back down. Fantastic. The problem I have is with the idle players and throwers that can wreck your more crucial, highly fluctuating matches. This is what happened in the first match with -82.
