Whitworth.7259
Just a little reminder of how crucial those placement matches are. In-game you don't get to see your rating fluctuate, but you can see just how many points you gain and lose during placements through GW2efficency. If you're gonna rage or afk over something petty, make sure you wait until after placements, as you will lose a lot less rating.
mortrialus.3062
Placements aren't crucial. You can have rotten luck and get placed in gold 1 and as long as you're good you can climb to the top.

The more confident that the system is in your placement, the lower the rating adjustments. If you lose a few matches initially (maybe due to a disconnect), but then win matches you aren't expected to win, the amount of adjustment decreases less with each match. In the end, an anomalous result in placements may give you a slightly lower rating initially, but the adjustments are still relatively large and if you are improperly placed, you can quickly and easily overcome it. Your current 1600 rating is more likely due to the partial rating reset ANet does every season. That partial reset stacks up people closer to the middle. Until the population to spreads out through most of the population playing many games, you won't reach your end-of-season rating.

It's more of an informative thread that states you can reduce the amount of climbing necessary if you don't botch your first few matches. If you're placed higher than you deserve to be then this system is great for putting you back down. Fantastic. The problem I have is with the idle players and throwers that can wreck your more crucial, highly fluctuating matches. This is what happened in the first match with -82.
