Tamur.6503
Often, I will be playing along in the open world, and then a friend or three (sometimes same guild, sometimes not) will sign in. We will decide to group up and meet at a specific open-world spot. When we waypoint to our meeting place, we can see each other's group dots (blue) on the map, but can't actually see each other's characters in game, and can't affect the same "world" (i.e. one of us can go 600 away from the waypoint and fight something that the others don't even see is there). We have found that if we stay grouped, and then all but one of us logs out (to char select) then back in again, we are able to see each other in-game. All good. What I'd like to know is... 1) what's going on?, and 2) is there some way to avoid the problem in the first place?

A solution for this would be to create a party, and right click on the portraits of your party members and select "Join in NameOfTheMap" which will then put you in the same map instance. Maps do that depending on the population active on that particular maps, more population = several map instances active at a time, less population on a map means that the game will redirect players of the less populated instance to the bigger instance. Party will let you directly join up on the instance of your choosing.
Danikat.8537
Guild Wars 2 uses a 'mega-server' system where all the servers in a region are grouped together and they create and delete copies of each map as needed. So there could be multiple copies of each map, all identical (except maybe with events at different stages), but with different people on them. This is why you'll never be put into a queue or told a map is full and you can't go there, but it does also mean you can end up in a different map to your friends. As @Naxos.2503 said you can solve this by forming and party and then right-clicking one person and selecting the 'Join in Map Name' option to move to their copy of the map. (Just make sure everyone picks the same person to move to.)(This is also why people will use the Looking For Group tool to find groups for open-world content. You could have 20 people wanting to do a bounty for example, but spread across 10 different copies of the map, so just trying to organise in map chat might leave them all with the impression there aren't enough people interested, but using the LFG tool they can all find each other and meet up.) Tamur.6503
Thanks to both of you for the great explanation, and for the solution. Can report that was much easier and worked perfectly.
