Game crashes at the end of Descent

I've played through what looks like the last bit of Descent 3 times, but each time right after I throw the spear into the heart, the game stops responding.

Just finished my 4th attempt, restarted before this one. The heart starts to shake, then the game just freezes. My guess is there's a cut-scene trying to start, but it's just not happening here.

Tried again, crashed again. Here's an image of what it looks like at the end.

  • Similar problem but I got to 75% on the torment - then nothing, branded kept appearing I kept killing them, but the torment was never targetable after - I thought if I died I could restaret from a checkpoint but could even tab out and watch videos or come onto this forum, die and be ressed by aurene so that - does the fact that the meta had started influence this? Anyway have to try again - or wait until bugs are sorted.

Not quite, I can't chat, use any skills, open any menus, close the game, it just crashes with a system dialogue box. Figure I'll try again after the next fix.
I'm running the game through Steam with Proton, I'm running Ubuntu. I expect that has a lot to do with it. Honestly, I feel pretty lucky that this is the first time something like this has come up for me, but it's kind of a big deal not being able to see the end of the story, and not being able to start the skyscale collections.

  • happyday.1503happyday.1503 Member ✭✭

Just tried again with the latest build, still no luck.

  • I just tried to finish descent on the latest build and I still crash right before the final fight

  • I had the same thing happening. I didn't close the game as my cat jumped in my lap, next thing I know, it was some big light (I guess the heart exploding) that tool about 20 seconds, then cut directly in the end scene with Aurene saying "share it with all of you".
Also lots of "discovered" during the Descent, without saying precisely what. Also "we're blood brother's now". Nobody checks the script for this kind of errors?

same problem here after stabbing the heart it explode but just keep freezing it wont go into that cut seen.

  • same also . even tried with a friend still crashes just after i spear him

Are you running linux too or are you on Windows? Wondering if it's just an issue with unsupported OS or if it's a bigger issue. Hoping it's on Windows too, otherwise I don't see a fix coming.

I too am playing on Linux, so not sure if it's the setup I use or game specific.

First time playing the instance I got to see a cut scene, but it ended on a blackscreen and a crash. The next 3 times the game froze before the cutscene was supposed to happen.

First time playing the instance I got to see a cut scene, but it ended on a blackscreen and a crash. The next 3 times it crashed before the cutscene was supposed to happen. Before the third redo I did let the client "repair" my game after having skipped that step the first 2 times (It asked me each time).

To play GW2 on Ubuntu I used the installer setup from this thread this thread which runs quite well except for an occasional crash before, but never after entering a story instance (e.g. when loading a regular map).

    More details in this post.

I've had 0 issues with this part of the game, I will try to run this a few times on my systems and will report back to you. In the mean time let's try to go by elimination by checking a few possible causes for this.

In terminal run these 2 commands (case sensitive):
    ulimit -Hn
    ulimit -Sn

They both will output a number, could you please post it here?

    Test Report #1:
Played through the 'Descent' chapter till the end. No issues encountered.
    System Specs: Ryzen 1700X, 16GB Ram, GTX 1060 6GB (drivers v418.52.05) - Distro: Debian 9
This test was done using WineD3D (OpenGL), not with the new D9VK.

    Test Report #2:
Again played through the entire chapter twice without any issues.
    System Specs: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 8GB Ram, GT 1030 2GB (drivers 418.52.03) - Distro: Xubuntu 19.10
This test was ran twice using using both WineD3D (OpenGL) and D9VK.

So far all 3 tests have completed successfully.

  • happyday.1503happyday.1503 Member ✭✭

    ulimit -Hn = 4096
    ulimit -Sn = 1024
System Specs: Intel G3258, 12GB RAM, 750TI (nvidia driver 390.116), Proton 3.7-8 and Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS
    Thanks for your input @ArmoredVehicle.2849

Those values on the ulimit are most likely the reason of the freezes, for Wine gaming (and Proton) they need to be much higher. Check out the Troubleshooting section over here: https://en-forum.guildwars2.com/discussion/31192/playing-guild-wars-2-on-linux-performance-optimizations-and-more/p1?new=1

I wrote a small guide how to increase those limits, let me know if you get stuck, will try my best to help.

  • happyday.1503happyday.1503 Member ✭✭

Thanks, I increased the limits by double, then (after rebooting and letting GW2 verify and repair when it crashed) used the numbers you recommended in the other post, crashed again.
    https://imgur.com/ez1IfB0
I'm currently downloading the OpenGL package you made (thanks for that!), I'll try that next time and see if that makes a difference.

AS I already mentioned here and in the other thread; my game also freezes before the cutscene.
    uLimit -Hn = 1048576
    uLimit -Sn = 1048576

    System= WineD3D setup by @"ArmoredVehicle.2849" version 1.6.2_nvidia
    Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS
    Intel I5 6500, 3GB KFA2 GeForce GTX 1060 (Driver 390.116), 8 GB DDR4-2133
Played mission ~10 times. First time playing crashed onto a blackscreen AFTER the cutscene, afterwards always froze BEFORE the cutscene.

I just retried the mission 2 times more with graphics settings changed to "best performance" and now get a crash report instead of just a freeze.

Unfortunately I am unable to copy the crash report with Ctrl+C. I did a couple of screenshots, but I don't want to upload/crop each of them unless it would really help.

So I found a temporary folder created by GW2 with the 'bink2w64.dll', most likely has something to do with the crash (there's a cutscene after the heart is destroyed). It's late so it will have to wait until tomorrow.

Also, can you please post the full path where did you unpack the game? As in "/home/user/games/GW2" etc.... Although unlikely such a thing would matter, there however may be a tiny detail which I suspect may cause an issue.

  • happyday.1503happyday.1503 Member ✭✭

Judging by the pattern, it seems the game is trying to access something at the end of the chapter, my suspicion is the FMV which plays at the end. I have uploaded some new packages with a potential fix for this issue. I can't replicate the crash on my end, so please test it and let know.

    Intel/AMD package: https://drive.google.com/file/d/15VEX9ayC6S9-6LF09dxy8mpI84eXZS8U
    Nvidia package: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LjkJy6Gp-XsU2Be92eQiz7B7XbjjP2JX

EDIT: These packages didn't seem to solve the issue and I've taken them down.

I replayed through the chapter again and this time I monitored the temporary folder, after you destroy the heart the game extracts the file named 'bink2w64.dll' in order to get ready to play the movie. The hotfix package tried to address that by making the file available before the game extracts it, but it seems the game extracts regardlessly even if the file is already present on the system.

  • Exact same crash here, this time on mac osx 64-bit client. screenie
Would love to figure this out, getting tired dealing with this dude's torment.

BIG update. I was able to finish "Descent" and the whole chapter. No crash and no major weirdness besides a couple missing sound clips at the "epilogue".

2 Things could be attributed to it. First of all, I played "Descent" in windowed for the first time; not "windowd fullscreen" or fullscreen. The bigger change was switching my gw2.dat with a one year old backup I remembered about today. My assumption is, that "our" gw2.dat files had a major bug in them, that couldn't or wouldn't be repaired by the client self repair function. Uploading the 50GB file is out of question for me though, it would take days with my internet upload rate.
As for the wine setup, I used the non hotfix version.

This all was a bit anti climatic now for those that tried to help, but I really appreciated the engagement especially by @ArmoredVehicle.2849 . I won't retest the mission again with "windowed fullscreen" for now, as I am honestly a bit sick of the mission (especially the second boss that is invulnerable to conditions). That said, I probably will do it within the next few days again and if it crashes again I will post an update about it, otherwise just assume that it didn't matter if the game was windowed or "windowed fullscreen". Thanks again to everyone who followed the bug reports and tried to help.

I managed to "play" it in windowed mode. But it gets sooo trippy. No sound, invisible enemies with no nametag (just their red circle), no dialog boxes, no text in menus, no aoe fields on the ground, missing abilities from the skillbar. I gave up and alt f4ed.

What a mess and what a bad joke from the finale. 1/10 worse than GOT finale.

Your comment made me curios so I replayed Descent now with a second chararacter in "windowed fullscreen". No glitches except for Kralkatorrik's heart always being rendered on the platform, where it would later be destroyed.

I also hadn't had any of the issues @Godfather.9058 mentioned while playing in windowed mode. It really was only 3 short audio snippets missing from the dialog at the "epilogue" instance. My recommendation therefor; change the name of your "GW2.dat" to something different like "GW2.dat.old" and redownload it (around 48GB depending on the amount of different languages you select). You could also simply delete your GW2.dat file.

I repaired the game once. Didn't work. I performed a full uninstall and clean install. Didn't work either. I think renaming the GW2.dat file forces the game to re download it. Might try that as well. Not sure if it will work.

And I played the game in regular windowed mode. With the desktop taskbar fully visible. Not windowed fullscreen, borderless window, fullscreen etc because they cause the game to freeze and crash.

osx 64 bit client update - using windowed mode worked for me, no need to delete dat file.
the scene still froze in the same place, but after ~45 seconds it unfroze and ran the cutscene. It was kind of janky (sound out of sync at first) but I think I got the jist. Thanks to whoever found that.

  • I ran into the same issue except that for me nothing's solving it...

I already tried the instance 5 times, and each time I end up with a slight freeze before the cinematic, then it is a full blank screen. The music is still playing but there's nothing at the end: the screen stays white

I tried increasing the ulimit, tried the winded mode, I re-downloaded the Gw2.dat file, but no luck...

I've been playing from the start and this never happened even once before. Is it something specific to the new build?

  • Update: I just tried a 6th time with the new build and this time, no white screen: the game freezes exactly like for @happyday.1503

  • I had similair problems too with a different part of the story which would always disconnect. Was told to limit the framerate to 30fps which worked. Try that? or is it a different problem altogether?

I think it is different. I just tried the instance a 7th time with the framerate limited to 30 fps.
I'm getting tired of all this... It's so frustrating!

    1. Repair your game (add "-repair" to the command when running it).
    2. Lower your settings all the way down.
    3. Try a different computer (works around driver bugs, unstable hardware, etc.)
    4. Reinstall the game entirely.
    5. If none of this helps report it as a bug to the devs.

Almost always trying a different computer and/or different internet connection will help, as the problem is caused by something local. Rarely is it a bug in the game or people will be reporting it in thread after thread on the forums.

One last note: Sometimes story instances bug (or unbug) when another player is with you.

Please see the link for a more detailed response but I found this to work for me with story instances in general. Basically it could potentially be due to multi-threading so:

    1. Go to Task Manager and find GW2 in processes, right click and "Go to details"
    2. On the new list, find GW2, right click and "Set affinity"
    3. Untick everything except CPU 0
  • Thank you, I will try all that and give you an update.

  • "She is the first of her kind" Then nothing happens and crash. Happened multiple times now and I'm unable to finish the mission.
