Windows Vista?

I helped a friend reload his old gaming laptop. It uses Windows Vista 64 bit. So far Guild Wars 2 won't install. Before I get too far into trouble shooting I wanted to ask if this operating system will even work with this game?

  • GW2 works on Windows Vista 64 but be prepared to rename GW2-64.tmp to GW2-64-exe periodically because of the executable not being verifiable when there is a new patch. This is even true for the installer / initial install. There are more complete posts in the forum describing the process/problem.

These posts have been very helpful. Thanks for the links! I was having trouble getting good results from my searches but that's probably because my phone is on it's last leg. This info should solve my install issue. I'll let you know my results :)

Up to a year ago I ran gw2 on a Vista machine until my friends and family surprised me with a new PC(Aren't they awesome?) So it should theoretically be possible? That said, gw2 had to be almost the /only/ thing running on the pc, couldn't even open a browser. Maybe a memory issue though. Good luck!

Thanks! I finally got it running and running well at that. In the end I had a harder time getting the updates and internet browsers running. It's done now and my friend is back into GW2. Thank you again for the responses, they helped a lot!

Please note that Vista is out of security support for a few years now, and with the passing of time you run the risk of getting malware which on it's turn may try to steal gaming accounts like that of GW2. If possible, upgrade to Windows 7 (If you require the same user interface as Vista) or just Windows 10 for many more years of updates. (Windows 7 is on its last legs as well, after January 2020 it will no longer get additional updates and slowly accumulates unfixed issues)

Of corse, you can vastly mitigate this by not browsing the web on this machine, installing a good AV like Kaspersky or Norton and overall being cautious.

    Ascalon Will Prevail!
