New Player Boost Solution

Recommended Posts

I am a green hunter. It's been a week i purchased both expansions. The data about boosting to 80 seems a bit out-dated. The one on the wiki especially https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/User:Tanetris/So_You_Want_To_Gear_a_Character#But_what_about_ascended_armor.3F

I was wondering if we could make a decent guide about what to do if you use a boost as a new player.

Before all that get professions/exotics etc. stuff. I need the gold to do so. Any tips that way might be a good start.

Hello everyone^^ Also any warm hearthed, welcoming, playful, social guild invite will be appreciated: Argon.6923

Would I be right in guessing (based on the fact that you called your character a hunter) that your previous MMO was World of Warcraft? If so, or if you're used to MMOs similar to WoW, my first piece of advice would be to forget (almost) everything you know about gear in MMOs, and in fact forget about gear entirely for now.

Gear (aka equipment) in GW2 is relatively simple. There's only 2 things which determine how good an item is - the level requirement and the tier, and there's only 6 tiers: white (common), blue (fine), green (masterwork), gold (rare), orange (exotic) and pink (ascended and legendary). Which means all level 80 equipment of the same tier is equally good, no matter where it comes from. If you kill a boss in the latest raid and get an exotic drop the stats will be equal to those on crafted exotics or ones from dungeons or any random piece you can find on the Trading Post.

What does make a big difference is the stat (attribute) combination on the equipment - exotics with the wrong stats for your character would actually be worse than rares with the right stats. But what's good for your build depends on a lot of different factors and there's not really any way to know until you're familiar with your character and the game.

The equipment you got from the level 80 boost is level 80 exotics, meaning that apart from ascended it's the best you can get, and ascended only has a tiny increase in stats and isn't required for anything except high-end Fractals because all the rest of the game is balanced around exotics. It's got defensive stats (Power boosts your direct damage, Toughness boosts your armour and Vitality boosts your health) which will make you harder to kill, but also reduces the damage you do - especially if you choose to focus on attacks which cause conditions. But it's enough to get you through virtually everything in the game, certainly enough to use until you know what you want to replace it with and you're able to get it, so there's no need to rush into getting anything better.

Which means my second piece of advice is to focus on simply playing the game for now. Do whatever interests you, whether that's exploration (open world maps are a big part of this game, and unlike many MMOs aren't irrelevant to high level characters), playing the story, trying World vs. World or PvP, doing dungeons or whatever else you want to try. While you're doing that get to know your character. Experiment with different weapons, skills and traits to find out what you like best and how they work together, then you can get the equipment for it.

Give the character a break, make a new one, don't boost your first character.

As everyone said, it may be better for you to play through your first character.

You're probably experienced with MMO and true it may be easier for you to catch on. In that case, I'd recommend you look up builds on metabattle and IMO the WVW roaming builds work well for open world survival, tweaking the build to remove stuff you wouldn't need for duels (like revealing invisibility). You want to start to slowly migrate to mostly offensive gear for your character(when you get better). This game is alt friendly but figure out which class you like best and go for ascended gear for that class first.

  1. Silverwaste is a good learning spot and good place to build up your wealth, etc.

  2. Look for HOT/POF and metas, join them. Join bounty trains in POF, especially Legendary bounty trains. Get all your waypoints for all maps when you can.

  3. You'll want to look for quests for ascended gear(There's quests for chest piece, weapons) and craft what you don't have. Trinkets can be obtain from Living Story maps. Here's 2 ascended coat collections:https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Bioluminescencehttps://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Leystone_Armor_(achievement)

  4. You may be interested in fractals(good money and you can get other items with fractal relics there). Look up beginners guides on youtube.

  5. recommend to join a guild.

So many of you guys replied and i must say in a very kind way, thanks for that. I think i figured out what is what for now; at least i got my berserker's exotics and i am pvp'ing constantly. I started mmo's with wow, that's true but the gameplay was too narrow for me so i tried ddo and neverwinter and had some good time with them. Why i am saying all this is cause i almost didn't suffer any damage from boosting to 80. The boost topic is a every-ones opinion is for himself kind of topic but ı am trying to say if you don't want to level 80 levels - ı get bored counting to 80- adapting a boost is not impossible as said everywhere.

I've been adapting to 80 since 2 days and i think i might be as good as a fresh 80. Got the glider, mount, exotics with my preferred stats, my build and 60 golds already :)I am planning on posting another thread listing things i did so far. Until then, thank you all for your conturbation(what? -is it really spelled as in masturbation?-

I would only play the boosted character far enough in HoT to get gliding and in PoF far enough to get the Raptor mount. Do it with all sound other than music off so you don't get too many spoilers. With the Glider and Raptor, leveling another character through the main story would be a lot more convenient and fun and you'd learn some important game mechanics that I promise you don't know regardless of how many other MMO's you've played.

Guide to use a boost as a new player:Don't do it!

Or actually, do not do it unless you understand that it is not a smart thing to do. You will skip a lot of content and a very important learning curve. It is much better to learn how to play your character and class by levelling it up and it also helps you understand this game as it is very different then most others.

If you do understand this, you will understand that this is not what you want. However...There are two valid reasons to do so.1: to unlock a mount (raptor) on your account early on.2: to unlock kiting on your account early on.

To unlock these you need to be level 80 and do the first story chapter of PoF or HoT

Do not use a boost to know how skills and elite specialisations work at level 80. It is perfectly ok to do so in the silverwastes without using the boost
