I only really don't like fighting Mirages, thanks to Mirage Cloak. No matter how many nerfs it gets, Mirage will be a pain in the butt.

When playing as a thief, I find that fighting other thieves is the most fun to be had in this game.
Doesn't happen a whole lot as thieves tend to ignore each other, choosing to try and outrotate the other thief, but when it happens it's just the best.
There remains a tactical aspect to it of timing your skills, that has mostly vanished from the rest of the game.

    Tempest.

I really enjoy Tempest vs Tempest. It's always good to see what the other Tempest runs and how they handle it.

Warrior I guess. Its the most "honest" class to fight against, and its good enough at 1v1s to not be a pushover (like thief is) while also not being so good its often pointless to fight them (like Soulbeast was). Though I also do enjoy fighting Engies.

    Necro.

Its the only remaining class with an interuptable heal. So theres huge swing potential in a 1v1 fight if you play your cards correctly.
(Also no random dodges and max2 boons so reliable corrupts...)

Find a good thief and this "fun" will turn into frustration, I'm definitely not having fun fighting any class even if I supposed to hardcounter it

    Thief

I like fighting everything, as long as that class has specific weaknesses I can lay into and cant just lock me down without any kind of retaliation avenue.
More often that not, that falls on thief. Its really satisfying to predict when they are coming out of stealth for a DJ or stowing your weapons only to block a backstab, or killing them while stealthed because they did something predictable like standing in the dead center of shadow refuge.

Its fun to fight everything but condi mirage at the moment, but V. thief matches have a special place in my heart. Necros are a close second, followed by warriors, power mesmers, and engineers. I think I'm less enthused about rangers, revs, and eles, but If they're good I still like fighting them.

    Warrior

Things that are fun to fight against:

    • clear animations with at least ~0.5s cast time
    • skills with obvious counterplay - move out of the aoe, block the big incoming hammer swing, etc.
    • predictable movement - no shadowsteps or teleports. This allows strategic defensive positioning

Warrior is probably the best at all of these.

Then I'd probably say Ranger, Engineer, Necromancer, Revenant, Ele, Guard are usually fun to fight but some builds have unfun elements.

Then Mesmer/Thief which are rarely fun to fight. Both use a lot of stealth, teleports, and skills that are instant or too fast to react to.

Holosmith isn't as fun to fight against as it used to be, but it still has pretty good, clear tells, so fighting against them feels more like I'm trying to outplay the things I see happening rather than trying to fight against things that I am guessing are happening.

Warrior used to be like this, particularly way back in the Hambow days, but's it's less so with Spellbreaker. Still, I'd put it up there near the top regardless.

    Revenant

Fun isn’t about easy for me to kill. Fun is about how even the matchup is, and could go either way if the opponent is good.

Revenant, because a good one is an absolute threat while still providing opportunities for counter play.

But I’d put out Reaper/Scourge as a close second because a good one is also potentially a tough fight but there are plenty of opportunities to take one down.

I don’t dislike fighting other thieves but, and this is personal preference, sometimes the opponent is skilled enough that we can fight for a long time, sometimes it comes down to who gets the drop on the other, and often the enemy thief can’t win 95% of the time. Thief v Thief is often a particularly lopsided matchup.

Honorable mention to warrior. Fun to fight, just too many “must dodge” abilities and so much chain CC to make them a tier below the others in “fun.”

Got depressed answering this because I realised 0/9 classes are fun to fight against.

Compare that to 2015 when all except cele ele and shoutbow were. And even they were maybe more fun than the most fun class now.

My favorite was killing condi mesmers and knocking them off their high horses while everyone was indignantly crying they were OP. I loved using power mes, thief, ranger, and war prior to all the nerfs and changes since then. Even with condi mirage still having all it's jaunts and a good amount of vigor and damage it was fine, the extended evasion was a bit annoying and one of the few deserved nerfs, but at the same time it wasn't that hard to play around even then.

Now? Nothing is all that fun to fight. Everything is a minor annoyance or a poor matchup, feels like class takes precedent far beyond skill.
Season 9 if a matchup was unfavorable it felt like almost everyone had the resources to outplay whatever they are put against. (except maybe necros who were really strong team fighters, and eles who needed some love) There were a few hard counters then, but now after all the nerfs and restrictions feels like you just run out or don't do enough if it's a unfavorable matchup, or unless your spec clearly over performs.

Seems like Warrior is the favourite of most people. Honestly, Id argue using Warrior as a sort of design/balance/counterplay benchmark would perhaps be a good idea right now.

While warrior might have the most reasonably visible telegraphs in PvP, it doesn't mean that you're going to be able to really do anything to him while he does them. Block, block, immune, immune, evade, block, immune, 0, 0, 0, 0, immune. Although, it's not like every class isn't like this. I still laugh at how people try to imply that there's a real distinction to be made among things like invuln, evade, block and the like. Yeah, sure, alright, you can technically CC someone in mid-evade with a ward wall, and that makes evade different than invuln, but that's almost ENTIRELY irrelevant in basically any face-value meta match-up.

warrior ofc, because the skills are telegraphed and has physical language going on, you can understand what hes doing even tho you don't know the class.

Warriors can't one shot, be one shotted, or have any other BS like that so it just feels much better to fight them than say, a mesmer. And i can lose or win without feeling like i'm under/overpowered

Core: They always have some weird stuff so I like 1v1ing them.
Berserker: I love when most of them are like " is op! nerf! noob!" when they can't oneshot me.
Spellbreaker: I don't like dueling them because of FC. Also, most of them are carried by Rampage when I play power builds and Shake It Off when I play condi ones.

Guardian, relies mostly on non-trait defenses and offensive.

I would've replied warrior but, since Rampage is a thing, it comes in close 2nd.

    Thief vs. Thief

Unfortunately, it doesn't happen often enough, but when two decent Thieves meet in PvP, the duels can be quite epic... especially when trying to land hits when both are invisible.

I'm still waiting for Anet to make the Thief the king of Stealth again, and to give it the unique ability to see Stealthed enemies. Then allow it to extend its own Stealth duration by hitting targets that are also Stealthed (instead of being Revealed), which would allow "invisible" Thief duels to last indefinitely. Yes, basically turn Stealth into the Upside-Down dimension. I'm so ready!

As a main warrior, I love fighting guardians, it's like a kind of rivalry "heavy fighter with magical support against heavy fighter to the old school" <3

That actually sounds insanely fun. Not so fun for other stealth-capable classes but there could be a balancing component.
I like the idea of thieves having their own "game of shadows" alongside the match.
