This, plus one Com can easily ask the other in open map or whisper.

No. I consider numbers to be lazy design.

Instead, in military fashion, the tags should dynamically change depending on the size, between 0 and 2 chevrons (< 10, 10-25, >25)

Dont look a gift Asura in the mouth.
    No seriously, dont. Shark teeth.

Well something to the effect of numbers would be fine. Less chat spamming to do other things like completing metas or parts of it, would be better. An option to enable\disable it would keep the paranoid less so.

Not really, since pretty much no one would use the numbers in WvW due to spies which are a real thing. Part of why many commanders have asked for invisable commander tags which we do have now.
Showing the numbers in any way would not benefit any one besides the spies

Really? Never heard of that reason before. Commanders asked for an invisible tag to either keep it private (pure guild raids) or small (roaming squads, who don't want randoms to follow them).

Spies will always be able to determine a squad's size.

I meant more of pve stuff but wvw could use it as an option I guess.

See its not Needed in Pve at all. You can have say 5 tags on map in pve. Only one may be doing the Meta, the other 4 could be doing hero points, guild missions, Mapping events. Etc. So showing the numbers for the tags is really pointless and a waste of resources. Just easier to ask in map who is doing what and coordinate from that point if possible .

If players join numbered tags then there is no point in asking. One less thing to ask.
