Are titles worth it?

Other than to say you may be better than other players, what are titles worth?

I actually stopped using them shortly after my first World Completion. I feel they only clutter up the screen too much when I'm looking for a specific character or NPC.

If they actually had an impact on gameplay (like in GW:EN) I'm sure I would have different feelings, but I also don't want to cause power-creep.

I haven't been using them, not saying that I won't.
I do in GW1 only because they offer benefits, especially those in EotN.
For instance the Asura that adds an energy bonus while you're in their territory.
Other than that, People like showing their accomplishments, I suppose.

I might start using them now.

They mean different things for different people. For some, it's bragging rights. For others, it's a nice bit of flavor text. I just use them if I happen to acquire them and if they fit that particular character for roleplaying (most of my characters don't use titles, as a matter of fact).

I keep player names turned off, so screen clutter isn't an issue for me, and I like picking titles which I think suit the character. But it's rare that I actually go out of my way to unlock one, I normally pick from the ones I've already got. Even the Light in the Darkness title, which is the one my main character usually uses I got because I also wanted the luminescent armour, the ascended trinkets and the mastery point, I doubt I would have done it for the title alone.

Titles are good for those like "thematic" characters... i loved them very much on neverwinter because the titles was related to the gear/weapons, my favourite was "Scourge of Dread Legion".

main pvp: Khel the Undead(power reaper).

I tend to forget which one I'm even using, and for the most part, I don't care what others use.
There's a few, like "Good Apple", where I think: "Yup, that person probably cheated/used an exploit to get it."
    Same with the Liadri achievement.
"I'm rich, you know"?: "Must be nice to just play the trading post instead of the game."

I don't put much stock in titles beyond what I want my characters to have.

    Many alts! Handle it!

I just did a couple apples every once in a while back when I still had a reason to be in Ember Bay. I don't even use titles.

As for stuff about showing off ... "hey look I did this boring and tedious thing" doesn't seem like the sort of thing worth bragging about.

  • HardRider.2980HardRider.2980 Member ✭✭✭

I use them as a form of RP that's all.
    For example.
My main is a Necro Salad.. Therefore I have the title "Knight of the Thorn"

A City of Heroes never die... A City of Villains will never surrender... Neither City will be forgotten.

As others have mentioned, titles are just another aspect of the cosmetic side of the game, none of which is 'worth it' . . .

For me, I address all of my cosmetic opportunities by running the rarest kitten I have available, just for the sheer absurdity of it :)

  • I like that there are a variety of titles to fit a characters humor, accomplishments, and style.

I myself prefer the old fashioned boastable accomplishments ala GW1 though. Merciless Legend is my current jam, and one day GWAMM will be my bread and butter.

I love my GWAMM. But GW2 titles seem to be a bit lacking in comparison to the GW1 ones.
I would love to see an overhaul/improvement of the AP/Title system to make it more rewarding, like GW1 did when you could add them to the Hall of Momuments for unique rewards.

Well, mainly I use titles that fit to each character while on the other hand I tend to switch them periodically to show/prove other people my accomplishments just so that nobody would think anything bad of me. Kinda paranoid, I know. But for the most part as I said before I use character fitting titles or titles fitting to the role of the character. For example: my raid healer druid uses the "Combat Healer" title to signal others that I play a raid meta healing build despite the fact that I'm mostly solo.

    I'm Hunter, he/him

I'm an AP hunter, so I usually don't go out of my way to get a title, but twice I did.

I have a norn pirate character (complete with peg leg and hook hand, and yes, he shouts yarr perodically due to his runes). Anyway I went out of my way to get Salty Sea Dog on him.

I also have a Sylvari revenant named Shrubba Dub Dub. I've always called him my rock star....long before the title rock star came out in game. Going for that title was a no brainer.

Other than Light in the Darkness the only one I remember making a special effort to get is Professor, for my cranky old asuran holosmith. Others I would have gotten if I didn't already have them include Traveller (which I use a lot on new characters or when just roaming around), Distinction/Honors in Applied Jumping, Avenger of the Disposessed which I use as a generic 'wannabe hero' title for new or ambitious characters and Veteran of the Mists for my revenant.

Oddly enough one I don't use very often is Miniature Collector even though it would be very appropriate, but I feel like that's more about me than my characters.

If they ever add Stormbringer as a title I'd have to get it for my weaver. His name was going to be Rinkhal Stormbringer, after two distinctive Istani creatures from GW1, but that's 20 characters long so I couldn't have it. Fortunately I already had it in my head that no part of that was his real name, and a real name to use in RP, so he had to become a bit less anonymous and go by Akkedis De Rinkhal. But if I ever get the chance to add his other nickname I'll definitely take it.

Incidentally I'm forever disappointed that the achievement Wurmicidal Maniac gives the title "Wurms Bane". I'd love to have the achievement name as a title.

It's a title. It has no "worth", it only has personal value for it can harbor pride or remind you of something fun you did. You use titles to either show off or please yourself, or to define a character.

This. Emphasis on personal satisfaction. Most other people (I count myself in this group!) don't have a clue what half of the titles are for, so if the goal is for bragging rights then disappointment might well be in store...

a handful have bragging rights, but mostly they are a passive roleplaying thing to help define someones character. Similar to social gear

This, their value is individual, and just a little preview of the player in some cases. Example I quite often use Dark Traveler and a guildmate of mine that runs with me runs Light in the Darkness to play off of mine. I am not trying to show off that I ran the PacMan event in Silverwastes and they are not showing off that they collect the luminescent armor. It's just a reflection on our personalities.

Personally I use my raid CM titles because i feel proud of them, I dont care if some ppl think that they are easy to get or that some ppl thinks that I bought them.

I'll have two number 9s, a number 9 large, a number 6 with extra dip, a number 7, two number 45s, one with cheese, and a large soda.

Why does everything have to have a universal worth? I mean to some people, just playing this game is a waste of time. If I feel the need to get a title or complete an achievement, that is because it is worthwhile to me. I like pursuing achievements. It is my time and effort, and I usually put on titles that I think are neat. So the better question is "are titles worth it to you?"

  • By the way, would it be a good idea to request to the devs that certain titles could offer boosts in pve, just like in GW1?
Say for instance, you get a title related to charr.
Then, when you are in charr territory, you'd get like 10% more damage boost against Flame Legion, and branded only; when displaying that title.
    Just an idea.

The devs decided not to add that in, there's must be a good reason for it.
Might be because there are already Sigils that do just that?
Might be a rhetorical question... but would be nice to give titles that extra bonus, or rather make titles give you the extra bonus.

Some titles are just fun, and perhaps a hint as to you/your character's personality or preferences more than any sort of brag or achievement. I frequently wear "Rock Star" when I am playing pop/rock tunes on my harp in town. Nothing to do with the achievement to acquire it which was fetching a bunch of rocks on one of the maps.

Titles are worth it to me because I enjoy picking ones out for my different alts the same way I enjoy customizing their armor, their mounts, their gliders, their miniatures, and their dyes. New alts often run around with Honorary Skritt or Sunspear Recruit as a title until they grow up a bit. My master chef is a Gourmet of course. Started a new charr alt for The Ice Brood Saga and had to get that one the Bloodbound title. My thief is a Bounty Hunter. My elementalist, a high born noble with a carefully selected and appropriate outfit is Finely Crafted. My main alternates between Been There. Done That. and The Be-All and the End-All to convey a sense of world weariness. Every now and then, I'll throw Chicken Chaser on an alt just for the fun of it. I'd love to get Leader of the Yak as I do remember the song. Since I don't have the patience to plod alongside 2,500 yaks I don't think I'll ever get it though. Still, I am diligently working on Yakslapper and am almost halfway there. One of these days I'll get around to getting the Contract Killer title just because I like the sound of it.

You get the idea. None of my titles will particularly impress any experienced player. That's fine though because I get them and use them for my own enjoyment. I don't pay much attention to other folks' titles and figure that they probably pay as little attention to mine.

  • Mouse.7382Mouse.7382 Member ✭✭✭

Titles don't play a big role for anybody but yourself. I use 'retired' titles (ex Exhaulted Legend), because to me, they show a somewhat 'rarity.'

About the only time I have ever seen a person/group, ask for a title, is for T4 CM--the LNHB (Leaves No Hero Behind).

Or in PvP, you can occasionally see a person comment on the rank/title of an enemy team member and immediately cry doom and gloom, that their team is far superior. Tip: More times than not, the person with the ultra rare title, still was not able to carry their team to victory.
