Why is cCaithe a thief?

A thief in Guild Wars lore is not literally a thief - as in, someone who steals. It's more akin to a ninja than a robber. Just as guardians are not necessarily upstanding paragons of morality, and necromancers are not necessarily creepily obsessed with death(1), thieves encompass a wide range of personalities, morals, and lives. It's simply a fighting style/way to use magic. For Caithe's personality, it makes sense since she's a Nightbloom - sylvari of that cycle are often very secretive and stealthy. Again, it's not wrong or even morally dubious in the least. It's just a profession, as much as an elementalist or a ranger or a warrior is.

(1) Trahearne embodies this pretty well. He's a necromancer, and probably one of the kindest and most compassionate people in all of GW2. Him being a necromancer is nearly an afterthought in relation to his character.

It's not an afterthought. Trahearne's wild hunt points towards studying the dead, undead and Zhaitan. To study the dead, he needs to be a Necromancer. Necromancy grants him abilities to manipulate conditions and immunity to certain conditions while digging through carcasses.

Good point! Perhaps I should have said "...in relation to his personality" instead of character, as him being a necromancer actually is important to his role in the plot. :)
