Mini Wars!!!

Recommended Posts

I've been talking to a friend of mine, trying to get him to play the game once he gets a PC up and running, but while we were talking today, I said to him, “I need a reason to play the game!” He looked at me, laughed, and said, “You're not selling it to me. If you need a reason to play the game, then why should I?”

I couldn't fault him for that because it makes sense. If I - someone who's put nearly 10k hours into the game since the closed beta – am not currently all that interested in playing the game, why should he?

I told him that there are loads of different activities for a brand new player to do such as: WvW/PvP, Dungeons, Fractals, Raids, and so on, but one of the biggest concerns he has is that, once he gets to endgame, he won't have anything to do because, unlike WoW and other MMOs, this isn't a loot-driven game.

Sure, you could work on legendary items – I myself have 2 full sets of armor and nearly 2 dozen weapons/trinkets – but those items don't make your character any stronger, which is typically why people play MMOs: to advance/progress their character(s).

However, he brought up one activity WoW has that GW2 doesn't. He said, “But, does it have battle pets?” I was speechless! I completely gapped on the fact that GW2 has well over 700 minis to collect, but there's nothing to do with them!

Almost every single time you go into a public space or do a world boss the game automatically hides them all in an attempt to reduce lag and keep people playing seamlessly. I don't even show my minis anymore because of that!

But, if we could battle them... Not only would that bring something fun to the game, but it would keep people playing the game for a very long time if done right! My friend said to me that, when battle pets was introduced to WoW, he spent most of his time playing the game just for that!

And, I mean, think about it! I've been playing Raid: Shadow Legends a lot lately (NOT A SPONSOR!!!), and, “Mini Wars,” as it could be called, could function a lot like that in the sense that you'd have to collect all of the different minis in the game, level them up, equip them with items that boost their stats and make them better at whatever they do, build a team that functions well as a whole, and battle them against other players!

It'd be so frickin' fun!!! Mini Wars would bring a whole new level of entertainment to an already amazing game! And, since the only way to get a lot of these minis is by doing the activities already in the game, players would be forced to do activities they wouldn't normally do!

Through which, they might find a whole other aspect of the game they didn't know they loved! It seems like a no-brainer to me! Now, yes. With well over 700 minis in the game, that's a lot of development time. However, not every single mini would have to have a completely different set of abilities, mechanics, and traits.

Think of it like Ranger pets. There are three major categories of Ranger pets: Aquatic, Amphibious, and Terrestrial. The same could be true for minis for Mini Wars. Aquatic minis could only be used in aquatic arenas, amphibious minis could be used in any arena, and terrestrial minis could only be used on land arenas.

There are also different, “Families,” of pets: Armored Fish, Bears, Birds, and so on. Again, the same could be true for minis. A pet that's apart of a family might have subtle variations of skills, but, for the most part, they provide the same buffs and/or do the exact same thing as the other pets in the family.

Meaning, that if you wanted a specific mini, you might not have to farm for THAT specific one, but would have several potential routes to acquiring the mini(s) you want/need for your team, reducing the frustration of spending hundreds of hours farming only never to find what you're looking for.

This is also how the devs could get around having to think of, implement, and balance potentially thousands of different skills/traits for each mini; they could just apply the same skills, traits, and roles to all minis in the same family.

All-In-All, I absolutely love GW2, but don't really have a reason to play it at all as I've done just about everything this game has to offer at this point. I know that not a lot of people have as much time to play games as I do, so many might just see this post as me complaining, but I think Mini Wars could completely revitilize the game!

WoW both added mini-pet battles years ago based on the popularity of Pokemon. It turned out to be more a time-consuming distraction than actually fun, and revealed that the MMORPG and pet-collecting genres do not overlap strongly in player demographics. So at best, a mini-combat system would be a curiosity enjoyed by only a minority of GW2 players. Moreover, with GW2's age and ANet's present staff/technical situation, I HIGHLY doubt ANet is interested in developing an entire new sub-system for GW2 when they can't even reliably deliver on the content they've already promised.

Pet battles were actually a success

no idea where you get that idea from, hiding the mini to reduce the number of models players need to render on screen, helps with your local fps, nothing to do with latency

I've heard before that Mini battles was planned to be part of Gw2 early in it's lifespan but the idea was scrapped.

There's an Anet logo arena in LA with Minipets in it which is supposed to be a reference or something to this cut concept.

I'm a Mini collector myself, have a pretty significant amount of them that i've collected over the years and I wish there was some kind of mini game or something I could do with them.Minipet battles are definitely never gonna happen, there's far too many minipets in the game and making them all unique etc is a monumental job for very little pay off.Specially if as Jimbru said it only ends up being used by a minority of players.

That said, there are other ways to make use of them.I played RIFT once upon a time, least I think it was RIFT.. might have been another game, I don't quite remember.Anyway what I do remember was this system where you had monsters and you could send them on little timed missions every day and if they were successful you'd get rewards for it.Something like that would be much easier than making a big minipet battling game.. though it would still be time consuming and jury's out on how many players it would appeal to.That said, many minipets are available in the trading post and very cheap so it wouldn't be hard or expensive to get a ton of them to send out questing every day.The main issue would be balancing them, rarety vs effective strength.. Junundu Wurm for example would need to be a strong mini to add to your team due to it's rarety.Depending on how simple or complicated the system is would depend on how time consuming it would be to make and balance.

You could make it complicated, limit the amount of minis you can send on a single mission, add different types like Offensive, Defensive, Support and effective level based on the rarety and type of creature you're using but figuring all that out for so many minipets would be an absolute nightmare, not to mention filling roles of all new mini's added in future too.

It would be much easier to have a success chance on each quest, each mini adds a certain persentage to that quest depending on the rarity of the mini and limit it by say 20 minis per quest with the higher tier quests diminishing the effectiveness of minis so that you need to send more of your best ones to get a higher success chance.Star Trek Online has a system much like this with ships you own, sending them on daily timed quests for rewards.. better and rarer the ship the higher the success chance they contribute to the mission.

With Gw2's overwhelming number of minipets though we'd need to limit the amount of active quests you can have at any one time so that people with 600+ minipets are not doing like 80 quests at once while newer players can only do 2-3.. that would be straight up unfair.

I think something like this could work in Gw2 pretty well, specially if Anet threw some unique skins and minipets in there as rare rewards. You could have all sorts of missions such asGatheting metal/wood/leather/cloth/plants contracts!Gives you some bonus crafting mats per completion depending on the mission.

Defeat the mini champion (insert boss name here)!Get some bonus champ loot per day based on Champ defeated.

Defeat mini world boss!Get a second world boss chest from whatever world mini world boss you defeated.

Helping those in need!Karma reward.

Odd Jobs!Small gold reward.

Casino Royale! Gold/EctoGamble some Gold or Ecto depending on which is defined by the mission. This mission would not be able to have higher than a 60% chance of success though.

Minipet Arena!Larger gold reward but only if successful. This mission would not be able to have a 100% success rate.

Minipet Safari!Various junk item rewards with potential for rare mini's to be found and aquired.

Explore the Ruins!Various junk item rewards with potential for weapon and armour skins to be found.

Slay the monsters!Random tier unidentified armour rewards

Those are just a few mission concepts off the top of my head.Naturally how long it would take each mission to complete would change based on the kind of mission, tier of mission and rewards you could obtain. Some could take as little as half hour or an hour where as others would only be once per day.Likewise mini's would probably need cooldowns as well to avoid overuse.Would probably be easier to just limit them based on their rarety tier though.Exotics, 1 mission per dayRares, 1 per day lower success than exoticsMasterwork, 2 per dayFine, 2 per day lower success than MasterworkBasic, 2 per day lowest success chance contribution.

I think if Anet were to make any kind of new system to utalize minipets more then something like this would probably be the easiest and least time consuming and buggy to implement. But it would still be a pretty significant workload to get up and running though so I can't see it happening perosnally, but it would be cool to have in Gw2 and I'd personally use this at least once per day.

Sounds abit like what wow have done with followers after warlords of draenor.

I like the idea, 100% increase in chance to get the rare items from the bosses your minis get to fight, but yea going from 0.0000001 to 0.0000002 aint much =) still sound alot better in corp speech.

This have been said before but it would be even better imo if a token system was implemented so each boss and meta droped an item so you could buy a account bound version of what you want. ( would love if anet implemented both tbh)So even the people who spend all their gold could get for example a chac egg sack if they wanted.Want Sam kill ogre wars for example 150times.
