It's a game, the point is to have fun playing it.

If you don't find it fun and you're only motivated to push yourself through the content because you're hoping you'll get an item which will be useful for another part of the game then don't do it. Find something you do find fun and do that instead.

Imagine actually playing the game instead of grinding for the gear.

Jokes aside, GW2 is like a meta game. Your in-game character doesn't improve after a certain point, but you (the player) improves skill-wise. This is most easily seen in sPvP and it still has a very big value in WvW and PvE.
