Do Rangers Need Rocket Launcher? Will It Be Good For PvP?

"From the jungles of the illegal canthan arms dealer factories, comes the Rocket Scout. By foregoing "Ranger" as ranging the land, and embracing "Ranger" as a user of superior ranged weaponry, the Rock Scout has picked up a rocket launcher so he can better kite dragons and deal a lot more damage to them."

Rocket Scout

  • Minor - Gain use of rocket launcher F Skill Kit which replaces pets - Skills abilities that work with pet now work for rocket launcher kit
  • Adept Selections - 1) Rocket becomes blast finisher, 2) Rapid Rockets make Vuln on each strike, 3) Bombard makes fire combo field
  • Minor - Rocket attacks destroy projectiles in their path
  • Master Selections - 1) Gain 3s of Super Speed when beginning reload, 2) Gain 3s of Stealth when beginning reload, 3) Gain 3s of invuln when beginning reload
  • Minor - Rocket attacks cannot be reflected, only blocked.
  • Grand Master Selections - 1) Rock becomes AoE damage on impact, 2) Rapid Rockets becomes a 2s stun on first strike, 3) Bombard deals 1 stack of 1s burn to each target in the radius per tick

Rocket Launcher Skill Kit - Ammo 5x for entire kit. The 5 ammo can be interchangeable with any of the 5 skills. Once the 5x ammo is out, the player must actively reload the 5x ammo with an elongated 10s animation that cannot be interrupted or the reload must be attempted again. The player cannot dodge roll or do anything else for the 10s while reloading. Marks mods work for attacks from rocket launcher instead of pet strikes. Same goes for skills like Sic Em.

The kit would be like Scourge skills, not like a Shroud or Forge or CA Kit. The idea is that these skills are slow and wouldn't be advantageous to use while in the fray of combat, but better to use while having a moment to free cast. If a player is struck while he is mid-animation frame during a rocket launcher attack or during a reload, he receives 25% more damage as an additional drawback. A reload can be attempted once per 10s, so traits that work off reload are essentially on a 10s CD. Once a reload animation begins, it can manually be canceled through the usual methods but still goes on a 10s CD.

  1. Rocket - single target strike for maul like damage - 1/2s cast time - projectile finisher
  2. Rapid Rockets - it's rapid fire but better - pierces - 2s channel animation to complete 10x strikes for something similar to maul into WI damage output - projectile finishers
  3. Bombard - aoe ground target, lobs slow moving rockets into the air - hits for maul like aoe damage in a very large radius over several smaller hits - can go up and over obstacles similar to volley - 1s cast time
  4. Bunker Buster - Exactly like ranger longbow 4 but better cause rocket launcher - pierces, deals maul like damage - explodes for worldly impact like aoe damage when projectile reaches 800 range or hits an object - opponents are pushed back with the projectile similar to deflecting shot - 1s cast time - projectile finisher on use, blast finisher at explosion point
  5. Rocketjump - It's Jumpshot but only better because rocket launcher - Initial blast deals aoe maul like damage, breaks stuns, is aoe stun cc, blast finisher - instant use

New utilities:

Heal Skill - Canteen - Heal self for mid grade coefficient, drops a water fieldUtility 1 - Seek & Destroy - The next rocket attack used is unblockable and will reveal & follow the target until it hits or until it is destroyed by LOSUtility 2 - Strike Marker - Works like portal entre - Set the marker, detonate it later for a rocket that falls and deals aoe knockback and maul like damageUtility 3 - Barricade - Works like line of warding, but it is an actual object with a life bar, which provides LOS and impedes opponent movementUtility 4 - Reposition - Can only be used while reloading - 3x ammo of an evade skill similar to lightning reflexElite - Nuke - 5s cast time - 180s CD - range 2000 - 1000 aoe blast radius - aoe knockback 800 - unblockable - hits 10 targets - maul + WI like damage

Engineer should get a rocket launcher. A ranger is someone who lives in the wilderness or a park and takes care of it. A ranger could definitely use a rocket launcher as a bundle like anyone else could, but there's no conceivable reason they'd be running around with one in their day-to-day lives. Launching rockets is like the opposite of conserving the environment.

GOOGLE: Army Rangers

I don't think those people are using rocket launchers for everyday tasks either. In real life combat is a big deal, explosives are an especially big deal, and even killing one enemy is a big deal. The only people who are going to be seeing rocket launchers every day are the people who maintenance them, in other words, basically engineers. In GW2 if you're an engineer you can use explosives every day, but that's because games aren't real life and people die and respawn all the time, and because games aren't real life and you can do impossible things, if a ranger wants to blow something up, they get a wyvern to breathe fire or lightning on it. If you want to use a rocket launcher regularly, just be an engineer. Ranger means nature. The Army Rangers are called Army Rangers because their job is to fight out in the middle of nowhere and use nature to survive, and they have to use rocket launchers because they don't have wyverns, magical exploding arrows, moving trees that can grab people, and all the other tools of GW2 rangers.

An elite spec of ranger with explosive weapons like rocket launchers that still used ranger skills like animals and plants rather than "ranged weaponry" would be OK but it seems like it'd be hard to make it work thematically and still be balanced. Either you're using less animal and plant skills so you barely look like a ranger, or you're basically two people, a ranger and an engineer, coming at your enemy. Real-life rangers aren't actually nature magic themed and can't summon wyverns or make trees grab you so this isn't a problem with real-life rangers.
