No, this does not mean the end of the story. I'm not going to give you spoilers, but all of our Living World seasons have been building toward this. We've been working on this for a long time. In the meantime, we’re having lots of fun reading all your ideas about where the story is heading. Speculate away!

we may or may not get another expansion. but the story will definitely still continue atleast... and given gw2's age i think we might see 1~3 more expansions if they ever do decide to make more

Maybe there will be further expansions in the future, however they would be different than the current expansions to a degree that calling them expansions in the GW2 sense becomes questionable.

Reasons for more expansions:

  • Money
  • Huge package of content draws in new and inactive players for some time
  • There is a lot of unexplored area

Reasons against more expansions

  • "End of Dragons" implies that the next expansion might conclude the whole dragon story line, concluding GW2's overarching story
  • With Cantha the last major area from GW1 will be explored, leaving us (with a few exceptions) only with loreless, unestablished areas
  • 3 is a good number for the amount of elite specializations - not too limiting, yet not too much overlap between specializations
  • The game is undeniably getting old - both in graphics, game mechanics and server capacity - and can no longer use newer hardware efficiently
  • The story has enough loose ends to keep us busy with living seasons for a few years

Do I think there will ever be a GW3?Honestly I don't think so. Just like there will never be a WoW2. Both games will fade slowly and one day be forgotten before turning off the servers. GW2 at release was wild, sadly I don't think we will see the same amount of hype for a MMO again.

Expansions are healthy for this franchise. A combination of LWS and expansions are an excellent business model. It allows ArenaNet to stay true to their buy to play model whilst providing content in between expansions to prevent content droughts that typically plague other games in the genre. Provided you remain active, the LWS will always be free.

It is not the first time they have flirted with this idea. During the Guild Wars era, they flirted with LWS-style content through the War in Kryta and Winds of Change. We then learned of the next expansion, Utopia, which marries up with how ArenaNet have handled releases with Guild Wars 2.

I am excited for the future of this game and the franchise as a whole.

Given that initially, IBS was supposed to be an alternative method of content delivery as opposed to expansions, with them then eventually going back to announcing a new expansion.

It seems likely that there will continue to be expansions throughout GW2's life. As seemingly, they generate a more sustainable revenue (Likely due to both the purchase price on the expansion, even for current players, and also the marketing hype that is "We have a new expansion wow PogChamp!")

The only question is how long GW2 will last. Will it last long enough to see an expansion after EoD? Will they try a new content delivery system (Again) and eschew expansions again? Will they work on a new game?

An expansion doesn't necessarily require new E-Specs.

It has been a feature of both current expansions, but there's no explicit need to actually add E-Specs, so long as an expansion brings something that players find attractive.

For example, they could create new weapon types. They could create a new build making feature (For example "Ascension"). They could add new skills to existing weapons. etc.

Anet are definitely planning to continue the game and the story after EoD comes out. So unless something catastrophic happens to cause the game to be shut down there will be more content released after the expansion.

But it might be in a different format and therefore get a different name. They might make another push to just do Living World releases, or they might come up with some new format for selling it and call it something other than an expansion to emphasise how it's different from HoT, PoF and EoD. I don't know what that would be however.

Why not? I was there at the release of GW2 (as an ex-gw1 player) and I would surely have the same amount of hype if they'd ever announce a hypothetical GW3.

I think this is actually the reason why expansions might stop in the future. People always expect them to have certain things. Things that can not be delivered endlessly. There are two ways to actually make progress beyond the typical current type of expansions.1: GW3: start over and throw all away.2: Ditch things from the past.

To elaborate more on the second. you can not always keep expanding the e-specs. Furthermore, there will be a time that the current combatsystem will be outdated. So it would be natural that the current combatsystem will one day be totally overhauled and replaced. This ca n be done by introducing GW3, but also by a future expansion. And as past expansions come for free, I do not see why people would complain a lot about loosing the current e-specs (although people likely will complain cause they do not like the new system, as any change has people who are enthousiastic and people who are against it)

I actually see this as a positive rather than a negative. It gives the writers more freedom to create stories and settings which suit what they want to do with the game without having to worry about what was established previously or player expectations. Also I'm actually more excited about the chance to visit some new parts of Tyria we've never seen before than rehashing the same things we've already seen, even if it was 250 years ago.

But there isn't actually a rule that says new expansions must have elite specs. Just because it's what they've done before doesn't mean they absolutely have to keep on doing it and can't make expansions otherwise. There needs to be some sort of new combat mechanics but there's lots of forms that could take. For one example they could introduce new types of weapons which are available to all specialisations (but not necessarily the same weapons for all professions).

To me saying they have to include an elite specialisation and if they can't do that they can't make an expansion is like the combat version of the people who, before HoT was released, said the first expansion would have to be set in Cantha, the second in Elona and the 3rd back in Tyria because that's the order GW1 established. Just because something has been done before does not mean it's now a pattern which can never be broken and must be adhered to no matter what.

For one example Elder Scrolls Online released an expansion with a new class, then their second expansion instead had a new skill line (kind of like an elite spec) for all classes and a new type of crafting. The 3rd expansion had another new class and the 4th had a new collection system and item types. They always include something in the expansion alongside the new map, stories, items etc. but it doesn't have to be the same sort of mechanic each time. GW2 could do something similar.
