Where are the exalted and what are they doing?

As I understand the reason the exalted exist is to protect and serve aurene. But there are no exalted anywhere in our fight against kralkatorrik or jormag (except a lonely exalted in the forge). There is not a single exalted in the eye of the north looking after her. The only lore explanation I could come up with is that aurene gave them a special mission they are busy with.Unfortunately I fear the writers forgot them instead of merging the exalted with the crystal bloom.

Keep in mind its implied there's only a few dozen Exalted at the most. When we first meet them, only about half that many are present at the gathering, and when they sacrifice themselves to save Tarir its implied to be a major, irreplaceable loss too.

Alot of them didn't survive the war with Modremoth, both due to self-sacrificing to save Tarir, and the ability of the Mordrem Vinetooth to kill them. All of the masks in the Fallen Masks adventure are recently dead, since there was no way for an Exalted to die before. Even more were lost on the final push to the Mouth of Modremoth in Dragon's Stand, and this is the last we see of them in Heart of Maguuma.

The Exalted in the Crystal Desert were all turned into Forged by Balthazar, so there's no way they would've been there to protect Aurene. They also didn't think like the Exalted in Tarir did, which is why Vlast was raised improperly and without socialising.

We know there's at least some still alive in Tarir from when we return there a few times.

Granted there aren't thousands, but there's over a hundred for sure. Even with the losses seen in these events during HoT, there'd still be about a hundred. When we visit Tarir in Season 3 both times, there's well over a few dozen Exalted, and that says nothing for the ones we had seen during HoT who are never shown to be in danger (only Ruka and the Luminary are returning characters).

The exalted existed to protect glints legacy and raise Glints children. One way or another those roles are done withAs established in HoT:

"En route to our final destination, we sheltered in a hollow and performed the exalting rituals, but ultimately, we left there as well. One day, Tarir will no longer serve us, and you will move on. Do not fear that day. When it comes, you will know that your purpose has been fulfilled."

It was established that the Exalted will have a duty and purpose within the scope of Glint's Legacy (which is to replace all six Elder Dragons, something not yet done) that goes beyond their duties at Tarir and raising Aurene until she's ready to replace an Elder Dragon. We don't know what that role is, not even a hint of it, but they do have things to do beyond Tarir for this legacy.

Their roles have not ended.

I get what u are saying but that quote for me pretty much reinforces that their role in the legacy is just until Aurene leaves - not in every aspect of it.

Even Scott McGoughs tale kinda points at it too as the Exalted are divided into three types quite specific to their role just being at Tarir https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/The_Exalted:_Pure_Dedication

There really isn’t much to say they have further roles beyond preserving the Legacy up to the point where Aurene can complete it herself.

It is possible they were intended to assist further, but given we were prob not factored in as her more capable Champion , Aurenes more than powerful enough without them and various other things that have happened, it makes sense entirely to me they are no longer needed

Wasn't meaning to imply that they would be part of every aspect, but the wording that the exalted "would move on" implies that they would go to another location. As to the three roles - those roles are more than just Tarir, but all Exalted outposts, and this would include whatever other outpost they move to. Based on The Way Forward, the exalted need outposts and "charging pedestals" to survive extended periods. This would mean that if they were to move on as the A Study in Gold achievement indicates, that they would need to continue the three roles for maintaining other outposts.
