These are the three (two, since 2nd link is basically repeating and minorly expanding 1st's info) most direct in-game sources. In addition, we had responses from devs in forums such as:https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/lore/Angel-McCoy-Interview/page/3#post2821776

That post is the primary source for "the human homeworld had little to no magic".

Afaik, we know nothing from the time before the arrival of the gods, where they came from and where their power came from.We know quite a lot about Tyria before the arrival of the gods.

We know that the Six Gods brought humanity to this world from elsehwere, but we know next to nothing of this human homeworld, true. What little we know is these five things (all mentioned or shown in the above four links):

  • The Six Gods arrived as gods.
  • The human homeworld had little to no magic.
  • They arrived via portal.
  • The gods who arrived from the Mists include: Dwayna->Balthazar->Melandru->Abaddon+Dhuum.** Grenth is called the first god "born of Tyria", however, Lyssa is explicitly stated to have unknown-to-Tyrians origins so theoretically she could be the true first Tyrian-born god. So whether Lyssa came from beyond the Mists or not is unclear.
  • Implication is that the human homeworld had some major strife or cataclysm, given "Dwayna sought to make the land a paradise for her followers.", "She chose Tyria and brought with her those who would make this world a paradise. As she had promised, Dwayna led her people to peace.", "While the other gods focused on building Arah and beginning a new future, Lyssa gave them joy and helped them forget the past.", and "What passed beyond in the Mists, only you remember."

They are nearly immortal (interesting side note is that the gods themselfes seems to be unable to destroy the other they can only lock other gods from their power and imprison them in the mists, while Tyrian heroes can destroy them and take of their power and even rise to their status, this has some simularities to the way dragon magic works). A lot how they function is unknown.

It's less that "they cannot destroy each other" and more that it is too dangerous to do so. Per Nightfall, a god's divinity/magic/power needs a vessel or it will go boom in short order. When Abaddon was killed, his power threatened to destroy the world of Tyria from the heart of the Realm of Torment in the Mists. This is why "Tyrian heroes can destroy them and take their power and rise to their status". It would seem that a god is not capable of absorbing a full god's magic thus becoming a "double god". Thus, a mortal to replace them is necessary.

I would disagree with any similarities with dragon magic. Dragon magic is not volatile upon death of an Elder Dragon, but instead peacefully releases into the surroundings; a god's body breaks apart and is destroyed upon death, while a dragon's body does not. Similarly, a special gift is needed to replace a god, while to replace an Elder Dragon you merely need someone capable of connecting to The All - no gift necessary, just biology. In theory, any race could become a god - as humans are just as susceptible to overdose magic as any other species.

As to "a lot how they function is unknown" - I disagree. We know quite a bit. Building up on above about how their bodies break apart on death and their magic must be contained by a vessel, we have:

  • A god's power seems to be static, compared to Elder Dragons that are variable. This is why Elder Dragons can overshadow the gods.
  • A god fighting seems to have an impossible-to-overcome "minimal damage" threshold, which results in heavy devastation (hence why Kormir refused to battle Balthazar - it'd cause too much damage).
  • Per Taimi's Scanner, Balthazar is not living during Season 3. He is only magic. Koss on Koss biography claims Kormir died to ascend as god. This matches the body makeup we see of Balthazar and Abaddon, where when they break apart, they are but a shell containing magic. Dhuum is similar, in both games. This implies all gods are merely literal shells and their organs within is replaced by pure magic.** It is possible that Koss on Koss refers to the next point...
  • It is also firmly established that when gods consume souls, those souls are utterly destroyed. Said for both Dhuum and Balthazar. Similarly, when Kormir ascended, she was the knowledge of Abaddon, the will of Kormir as if their souls had merged.

None of these attributes are given to the Elder Dragons. Personally, the only similarity I see, is that they number in six, extremely powerful, and have some overlap of domains.

There are still a lot of questions, but we also have a lot of small tidbits spread throughout.

I really want a return of Scarred Psyche of sorts, but as a three way battle between Joko, Oswald, and Eddie, and players can choose which side to join - with both a PvP and a PvE version of the activity.
