How do I get Outfits and custom skins?

I see that you can get those full body Outfits out of Black Lion chests so I have been clearing zones trying to get keys - to no avail. I think I closed out 8 zones, got two keys and they both gave me dye. I got Baby Poop Green and Vomit Pink or something.

Is there any other currency that I can use to buy the keys or any other way to get the Outfits or custom mount models? (besides $)

For the most part no.You can convert in game gold to gems to purchase things, but for the most part getting mount skins or outfits will cost money.

You can get one key per week by doing the lvl 10 personal story. So if you want to continue trying your luck with the black lion chests, I'd recommend doing that story step once a week.

Around halloween there is one outfit that can be bought with candy corn cobs. To my knowledge that's the only one that isn't exclusive to blcs or the gemstore. As for mount skins there is one warclaw skin that can be earned in WvW, all other mount skins are again gemstore or blc exclusive.

As others said, your in-game gold can be used to buy gems, but it's not going to be cheap.Keys can also be obtained as a certain drop from some story steps (level 10 last story, but only once per week, level 40 first story and, iirc, level 60 second or third, the Claw Island attack.)I don't think it's convenient to rely on keys to get skins, though, since the wardrobe unlocks are not a sure drop and they give you totally random skins. (Make sure to unlock all the very cheap ones, or they will give you many disappointments)

Overall, it's always more convenient to farm and use the gold to buy the skins you want than take your chances with keys, there is way too much garbage to make it worthwhile, unless you are blessed by luck and could get some exclusive drops. If by some luck you got enough weapon scraps (10) for a ticket, you can use that to buy one skin of your liking from the black lion weapon specialist.

Though, save your statuettes. Occasionally they add outfits there, as well as cool skins from keys and even endless gathering tools. As you were suggested, keep one slot free to make one character every week, level it to 10, do the story and get the key.Personally I save all my keys and open them only when there is a new item I want, among the uncommon drops. (Always preview the content of black lion chest before using keys on it, or you risk to get a big drop that may not be of your liking.)

I think this is all I can advise :)

In short: there is no other efficient way to get outfits and mount skins besides $$$.Gold to gem will take a lot of farming so lot's of time and it is probably a lot more efficient to just spend some $ (depends on your RL income).Key farming the same. In my opinion that 1-3 key per week and trying your luck is just a big waste of time.

This game has two different ways to customise your character's clothing: outfits and armour skins.

Outfits are one-piece sets with 4 dye slots shared across the whole outfit which can be worn by any character, there's no race/profession/gender restrictions on them (although some do look different based on the race or gender of the character wearing it). Almost all of them come from the gem store so you need to buy gems either with real money or with gold to get them. As you've noticed you can also get them from the guarenteed wardrobe unlock in black lion chests, but that's a very round-about way of getting it as both the chests themselves and the wardrobe unlocks are random so there's no guarentee you'll get what you want. Buying outfits directly is much simpler, you just choose the one you want, pay for it and it's yours.

Armour skins are more customisable because you can swap each piece individually and they each have their own dye slots. But they're restricted by profession - each profession can only wear one armour weight and you can only reskin armour using skins from the matching weight (so you can't put a light gloves skin onto heavy gloves for example). Armour skins come from all kinds of places, a few are sold in the gem store but most are earned in the game. Each skin comes from one or two specific places, some are drops, some come from dungeons or collections crafting etc. so it's a good idea to find ones you like and then use the Wiki to find out where they come from. You can see all the available skins and preview them on your character by going to any bank and clicking on the wardrobe tab.

If you don't want to spend real money or farm lots of gold, or if you prefer having more customisation, the armour skins are the better way to go. :)
