Why do people hate Trahearne?

If you play the story once, Trahearne might be ok. He gives out lore, lets the PC shiny and DOES NOT steal the glory. In fact, he has a lot of positive things to say to the PC.

BUT: he never stops talking. His stream-of-conciousness constant blabbing, while totally in character, gets on a lot of people nerves. Especially if you have to hear it for the Xth time. I am pretty sure a lot of people would have loved a mute option for him.

That said, I was very sad what happened later to him. He IS a genuine nice guy. A socially awkward nice guy who got pushed into a position that was not exactly suited to him.

we're playing the game in german and there trahearne can't finish half of his sentences because he talks sooooooo slow and is cut off by the timer for hte next sentence, sometimes his speech bubbles are a huge chunk of text that is cut off too early. how am i supposed to like a character that constantly interrupts itself?

also the useless part - but trahearne is no fighter, it's a lot more annoying with that "destiny's edge" that supposedly can take on a dragon but dies to a jungle wurm. especially logan was known as "the dead body on the ground" instead of a legendary guardian for us.

For me it's the incessant, unskippable babble and the fact that he's completely worthless in a fight. When I first started playing the more active combat was quite new to mmos, so I was playing through the story (sylvari), constantly having to lug around a jabbering ball and chain and revive it, while fighting off hordes of monsters. Trehearne was a monologuing encumbrance, not a character.Once I grew accustomed to the combat nothing else really grated on me so much, so other npcs got a free pass where Trehearne left a scar of frustration.

Yes I hate Kormir, that, much. Trahearne at least respects you.

everytime some npc ingame mentions kormir i always envision my character to yell out "screw you kormir" (in cosider my main character to be the same as gw1)

I loved the guy because he was a perfect mirror to the underlying story (starting weak/from nothing, kinda being forced to become heroes, and having to defeat the threat with combined efforts). It was the very point of him that he was a bad fighter, but had to get around that somehow.

His existence also meant that in an MMORPG, I was not the one heroest hero ever, but share that with other characters, which makes much more sense in this environment.

For some reason, some people hate exactly all of that. I would guess that the people who hate Trahearne have a huge overlap with people who hate the base story for being lame.

I also really liked his voice, but only know him after they completely reworked all his lines. I don't know the original version. If I remember correctly polls showed that it was definitely not the majority who hates Trahearne, but a very, very loud minority, and I guess Anet delivered to them.

while i dont hate him, i'm still mad that he took the glory for killing 3 elder dragons. and himself.

all jokes aside, the hate is subjective and more a meme than anything else. i kinda drowned out pretty much all the dialoge 8 years ago, so my memory is a bit ... hazy. while i do found him a bit annoying, that was kinda true for everyone in the core story.

I had a dislike for him, not so much as the character he was representing but how bugged and useless he was in early game stories/events where he participated,Mostly I remember him stuck at the start or soon after, busy speaking his monologues while my character was busy fighting mobs, escorting things etc. Then in the end when a section or chapter was done he would superspeed to the rest of us and get the glory for succeeding with the mission. If he hadn't bugged out so much and been a functioning active part of the events I wouldn't have minded him getting the glory/?edit: spelling

For me, it was the constant melodrama without any inner resistance or meaningful ruminations, combined with the nature of his interactions with the player, constantly switching between quailing over the least impediment, and grandstanding for the pact.

Or, put simply: "Commander? A word …"

A lot of the Trehearne hate is overblown, but years ago I did a poll.

Most people who started with Sylvari characters like Trahearne because they were with him from moment 1. Most people who just ran iinto him ranodmly at level 50 or so felt he came out of nowhere and took over their storyline and therefore didn't like him.

It didn't help that he used to say "this won't end well" a LOT which they thankfully have removed from the game.

He works very little and is essentially a figurehead. His only call to fame is being "chosen" by Caledbolg, and being an apparently kinda-good strategist.

I think the whole "chosen prophecy" stuff is a very archaic plot driving tool which people have grown to like lesser and lesser over the years for more mature fantasy settings.Like it's all cool for younger audiences and stuff, but teens and adults are more disillusioned and tend to scoff "Chosen prophecy" stories.

That could also be one of the reasons why people roll their eyes at Trahearne being the center focus of the main story after the defense of Claw Island, and after being chosen by Caledbolg.

I'm okay with Commander being a chosen Dragon Champion though : We literally raised Aurene ourselves and form a bond with her as a child, which might lead them to trust us more than others. And this bond is also shared with Caithe, who was there nurturing Aurene when we weren't around.

In the end it is always a matter of personal preference whether you like a character or not. For me Trahearne is by far my most favorite character in the game (beating even Canach). I found at a relieve for once not to be the "chosen one" or "big boss" in a story. I find this trope really tiresome. I just really like the way Trahearne is written, with all the insecurities and imperfections he carries around with him. Or the fact that he is a huge history nerd and can't stop talking about it even when the person he's talking to gets a bit bored ;-) - I can relate to that a lot ;-). I think he has in fact more character development then the majority of the Dragon's Watch crew, but it is easy to miss.

Gameplay wise there may be a few quirks with his character: he can be somewhat buggy in some missions if you run to far ahead and sometimes he is facing in the wrong direction, looking at a wall instead of the other Npcs and such stuff, but I can see past those issues easily. And his voice actor, while having a lovely timbre, has a rather odd way of acting/voicing the character. But for me this just became a part of Trahearne's idiosyncracies. Not everyone has the ability to be/talk snarky and entertaining.

I did start with a Sylvari character though when I played the personal story for the first time. Maybe that does make a difference? But then I also didn't mind Kormir (or Rurik) and I can't really see why others disliked them so much.

I prefer talking about the pact with Trahearne than chasing chimeras with Aurene tbh. It's pretty evident how Aurene was Trahearne's replacement and how they made her the cutesy, fan-favourite little dragon so people can get attached to her.

Imo GW2 would have been better without the dragon champion stuff and if we stuck as military leaders in the pact. We would still be heroes, no need to be 'the chosen one'.

I actually miss Trahearne. You can kinda empathize with him in HoT, as he resisted Mordremoth. And aside from Eir's death which would serve as a mean of promoting Braham's 'rebellious' stage in LS3, Trahearne is there in the count of yet another important figure whose death left no impact cough Smodur, cough Almorra.

The first story parts Traherne was pretty anoying to me. He felt bland and overley characterized/pigeon holed into the scolar/book worm arche type. But after talking to the pale tree when re recived his sword i liked him more and more he evolved pretty good. Also i really liked that he was the Leader of the Pact. I think GW2 is overdoing that we are the super world saving hero to much. I don't know in FFXIV the whole warrior of the light thing works out fine for me but here i can't get into it. It just feels arkward so many times. I cringed so hard when my Charr was forced to join the pathetic shining blade dudes.... That's why we need more Trahernes. Let them be the leading super heroes. If they grow to strong you always can let them die or take their powers away by some story relevent events! I'm on team Trahearne! Also he summoned a bunch of necro flesh golems at one time! Gives extra style points!

i miss Trahearne because it was like he was the main character whose story we were a part of. with him gone, we become the main character and I cannot think of a flatter, more boring specimen than the commander. They are like the most immaculate, perfect statue of a person that always says exactly what is needed to move the story along, is perfectly witty whenever needed, is perfectly understanding whenever other characters have a problem, and is perfectly charismatic in the face of whatever dilemma is presented before them. How can the hero have any character development when they are supposed to be a blank canvas for the player to imprint themselves on? It would be better if some other character, perhaps logan, pushed the narrative and had ups and downs along the way.

I don't know, whenever Braham or Taimi breathe 20 "please kill off x" threads pop up. I feel like that would get worse if the supporting cast was leading the flow entirely. These are the people who by and large dislike pretty much every major character and are perpetually unhappy though.

Well yeah, it's hard to like braham when he is written to twist everything you do into a negative, and its hard to like taimi when she spends the majority of S4 making crying child noises, and its hard to like kasmeer and marjory when their entire characters seem to revolve around arguing with eachother about how the other is putting themseves in danger and oh but you didn't check with me first but oh I dont mean to offend you and so on and so forth. It would be fine if there was a better reason for you to dislike these characters. You could say it all paid off when I found myself agreeing with drakkar whispering to me about how much I disliked my party (of course the commander brushed it off with ease as usual, perfect character that they are).

With that said, there are still plenty of tolerable characters like logan, rytlock, canach and rox. Idk who writes for Anet these days but there have been interesting characters in the past. In terms of enemies, Joko and Bangar were pretty good in my opinion. I'd like it if logan took the reigns for pushing the narrative, but mostly only because I'd follow that sexy armour into the gates of hell.
