Forging Steel without anyone in Public instance

Recommended Posts

I went through the scrying pool choosing the "Public" option, in the Eye of the North. I am the only one in the "Public" instance. I completed tasks until the group event with the tanks starts. I'm the only one in the instance(SOLO)the tank escort instance I got as far as bringing down the gates with the harpoon. I successfully harpoon and bring down the gate---then everything stops. We don't enter the gates. I watch the video provided by "Ayinmaiden" where she is in a public group and after the gates open they enter them and complete the instance.
I have tried 5 times to enter the "Public" instance in hope of getting a group and being able to complete the tank instance but no luck. Can this be completed without a group??? Am I missing something?? To be honest I dislike this instance solo---not much fun and when I finally get the gates down no one moves and I can't complete the instance.
Thank you

Lost yet again in GW2

Well, some good news, you can complete this solo - Forging Steel scales incredibly well compared to other instanced content.

If you're getting stuck at the gates to the ruins, it's usually because a.) your tank needs scrap metal repairs or b.) there are Icebrood attacking the NPCs and preventing them from moving forward. I've not yet seen it stall because of Nicabar, but check to see if he has a potion-making event going that might be stalling you, since he does mix one near the gates.

Doing this content alone does take longer than with a group, but if you have the time to pick at it, you can absolutely make it through and even kill the boss by yourself at the end. As I recall, if you're playing on normal mode (no challenges), the tank can be damaged and stop moving, but it never explodes or fails - you can always repair it and keep going after you deal with the enemies in your way.

That's why you shouldn't waste your time that way, only end up being frustrated, but gather a team via LFG and enter a private instance with them. You will have a smooth and nice experience. :)

and you payed attention to how you are supposed to fight the big steel guy? Say all the training and mentioning and calls from the NPCs to USE THE HARPOON GUN?

HINT: the blue bar below an enemies hit points is its defiance bar. Defiance bars are broken with crowd control (pulls, knockbacks, daze, stun, etc.). The tank harpoon once shot is a constant pull effect which breaks the bar very fast. The instance is very clear in trying to convey this mechanic.

The instance scales to player count. The Big Steel Guy is just as hard/long with 10 people who don't do the mechanics as it is solo. The only part which becomes easier/faster is the introductory tasks since those do not scale yet still have to be completed in order to cut down the 10 minute time.

That is debatable based on the various horror stories that have been posted about PUG runs ... spending over 1 hour on just the boss when the whole instance can be solo'ed in less time.

various other parts are faster if you have two people since you can actually have someone using the sniper rifle

I spent the first 4 weeks soloing this instance daily (in 20-25 min, often as Daredevil or Reaper). Every situation where you have access to a sniper position can be utilized solo as well.

It just becomes a matter of getting to the sniper position and making short work of the enemies with 1 or 2 shot kills. Most often the tank won't even take damage.

Even works in the dwarf sections. Simply leave the first pack partially alive so the squad doesn't move on. Use the launchers to take out nearly every dwarf. Once ready go back and continue the mission.

Same for the pre final boss ambush area. If fancy you can even get the miniboss in fight with the NPCs so he doesn't get out of combat, then burn him down with the sniper rifle at the top.

This mission scales exceptionally well to player size.

I've done this twice in a public instance. The first time was in the story playthrough, there were a couple of other people there, I did not realise about the harpoon on the tank so I imagine it was the other players that got me through it. The second time, it was the other way round. I knew about the harpoon gun but the other two or three didn't and I could not finish it. The tank doesn't seem to die in front of the final boss, just goes into a state where you can't use the weapons. Could not repair it quick enough and could not get enough ammo. Maybe public instances are good when the release is new and lots of people are playing (like DRMS are now) but I came in late and it was a mess.

On the flip side, go the strike mission section in LFG and there is often groups there for it (it's got nice rewards). So I would recommend doing that over a public instance any day.

If you prepare a text you can post in squad and say chat before the boss fight that explains what to do, it should make things easier, especially for new players.

Something along these lines: "Everyone enter the tank NOW! --> Skill 3 x 3 (CC) --> spam Skill 1! Go go go!"

:)

I did not mean that you can't but doing it solo requires moving back and forth which ends up wasting a lot of time especially in some of the JP like sections

The horror stories generally includes nobody following the instructions.

That might be the exception rather than the rule but I've come to have very low expectations. Also that is a bad explanation. You should tell them what the cue is for getting into the tank so that they will still be able to do it when you are not around to tell them when to get in then tank. You can also just hold down 3 instead of spamming and it probably wouldn't hurt to point out that you need to have the boss selected before using the 3 skill.

Oh true, yes absolutely. Everything costs a tad more time solo.

Which is why...

Also that is a bad explanation.

...I believe it's best to keep any commands short, because people don't take the time to read full instructions and explanations in an action-packed mission they are doing for the first time.

After going through the process once, they should be intellectually capable of grasping the reason behind the commands, as everyone can see the defiance bar and will notice that pulling the harpoon's chain breaks it bit by bit, no?

You should tell them what the cue is for getting into the tank

They should be able to notice the NPC calling for action, "Get in the tank!" The connection between that and your teammate rushing you to the same action shouldn't be too hard to conclude, by the second or third attempt the latest. ;)

But if you prefer to prepare a longer explanation that you can copy and paste when the time is right, that's fine, of course. I just think that beginners will be overwhelmed by everything that's happening around them, that's all.

Have not managed this solo (I usually hit Tribune rank when running normal mode), because it requires you to have at least two challenges active while also doing all of the events as you go through the instance, keep the tank moving to meet the time limit, and knock down the boss at a reasonable pace. Might be doable with some quick thinking and knowledge of where things will spawn and how to cut down on your travel time, definitely much easier with buddies in your party who can split tasks with you.

Here's the wiki article about getting the different ranks and what challenges are available. If you think you can smack down two of them and still make good time, give it a shot and let us know if you manage to solo through.

Tonight I got Imperator rank (and thus completed 'Moving Up the Ranks') by putting up a lfg and asking everyone to read the wiki tips on how to properly do it before starting. Then we activated 3/4 challenges (except 'Powerful Foes' ofc) and had folks superspeed the tank along the way. Didn't seem all that difficult and was nice to knock that one out.

Not sure I'll attempt the 'Candidate for Khan-Ur' challenge as that one seems insane with 'Powerful Foes' up (i.e. not sure if pugg-able and doesn't reward any ap's anyway).

Also as an fyi, a few days ago I managed to solo the 'Tank Escort' challenge mode - and it wasn't really all that difficult (got it first try). So that's definitely a way to do it if you have trouble finding a group.

Lastly, soloing FS is a great way to complete the two 'Heavy Rival' events where you have to kill 15 foes in order to get achievement credit. Just focus on those first and you should have no issues getting your 15 kills.
