Outfits vs. Armor Skins - Which do you prefer?

I posted a poll about this a long time ago on the old forums and got some mixed reactions. Now that there are a ton more new outfits out (with new ones on the way) I would like to see what people's opinions are nowadays with Path of Fire being released. If you have anything more to add please do make a post below.

Thanks!

Each has their place, and I'm happy to be able to choose either depending on the situation. I like mixing and matching armor skins, but for a quick change-up or to cover temporary armor outfits are perfect.

Seeing the only outfit I want/like is the Jungle Explorer... I will have to say armour.
But even then, I rather outfits as I can't stand not having pants on Light armour and having long coats in 99% of the medium armour.

I can't complain on heavy armour as I hate how the helmets are in heavy armour AND on outfits so...

I think there is room for both. I prefer armor skins on the whole for the customization possibilities, but I like having some outfits for when I am leveling a character, low on transmutation charges (I won't ever pay for those), or just feeling lazy.

If the whole point of end game gear in GW is fashion wars (and let's face it, there's little else when it comes to gear) why would I buy an outfit? So I can be unique with my dye choices? Please.

It's fun to mix and match gear to your tastes. I enjoy making my character look truly unique and not having any starter player with 10 pounds look exactly like I do.

But each to their own I guess.

Outfits are good for seasonal events, being fashionable while leveling, easy too switch out without ruining your main look and gives you a decent appearance out-of-the-box so to speak.

Hunting various skins and complete a certain look down to the dye make for some good time- and goldsinks and is rather enjoyable for me atleast

Nobody likes outfits, but they just keep making them anyway.

For those curious as to how that "if you don't like the RNG mount skins, just don't buy them" theory works out, this is how it works out.

Armors for certain. I understand that outfits are much easier since the inability to mix-'n-match makes it easier to avoid clipping hell, but it also makes them too restrictive for my liking.

People still buy them, though. I have bought a couple of them myself, though I don't use them as often on max level characters.

As long as there's no proper wardrobe feature and we have to buy additional transmutation charges to apply armor skins, i prefer outfits, because there are much cheaper on the long run.

Armor has drawbacks. Mainly that the compartmentalized pieces leave no room for true customization so you're left with over-designed ensembles. Anyone who takes offense to my argument, I'd say look at a few dozen random characters' armor and that is all the evidence you need. The way the system works is you have 6 distinct pieces + the backpiece that you can choose from and the result often is either something nice but similar to multiple other pieces, something overly designed and gaudy or something minimalistic.

Outfits have different drawbacks, mainly that undesired parts of an outfit you might not be able to adjust at all. The advantage, of course, is that the pieces are designed in a way to fit together. Many might say that a drawback of outfits is that everyone will look the same which is both true and untrue. Someone wearing the same outfit as you might look the same if you use the same dyes, be the same race/gender, wear the same backpack and toggle the helm the same, but the same can be said for someone wearing the same armor as you. And as more outfits release, the less chance people will wear the same outfit at the same time with the same dyes, etc.

My problem with this whole outfit vs armor debate is those that defend armor while in the same breath scoff at outfits when outfits are actually better looking and more distinct than a lot of the armor pushed out. Considering my tastes, I haven't found 1 good body piece for practically any of my characters in over a year (just checked, every one of my characters is using a body piece that either released with the game or around the HoT era) which just goes to show the variety available. The last 3 outfits I bought hinged mainly on the torso design.

Mix-n-matching armor skins is one of the most fun things to do in GW2. Outfits are too restrictive and boring.

Armor skins should be entirely in-game content, not sold on the gem store. And, hey, that's what they've been since LS2.

Outfits are fine for what they are and what they do (giving looks that aren't possible in armor because outfits don't need to be seperated into six discrete pieces)

I like both, but use outfits more. Outfits are nice because I don't have to worry about using up my transmutation charges for a change of look. I'd like outfits better if I could turn shoulderpads off, but I still enjoy them a lot.

Armors skins are nice, and I have a ton of fun with them, but I really feel both products have a place in the game.

I would rather use armour skins to customise my look and not be a duplicate of the guy standing next to me, BUT the armour skins currently available seem to mostly be pretty crappy. I find myself using outfits just because they look better. Once I find some decent armour skins though, I will stop using outfits.

Outfits are Armor as a whole skin.
It's something faster to create, more generic ( you won't have any issue with putting different skins on the same character ) and mostly something which kill customization.

    Outfit should all be Armors.

  • Both

I'd rather be able to mix them both together.

Armor over outfits to me, mostly because i dislike 95% of the outfits and the ones I do like, i'd prefer way more if i could remove a specific piece that isn't the head. And then i despise looking too similar to other people- i have a special hatred for the outfits based on npcs (like kasmeer, zolja, and marjory all have at least, amongst more).

That said, if someone has money, I can see the appeal in outfits as they transcend armor type (ie i cant put a light armor skin on a piece of heavy armor) which makes for some great themes (one of my fave themes being mesmer knights- mesmers in heavy armor outfits).

  • notebene.3190notebene.3190 Member ✭✭✭✭

I think they both have a place. The outfits are nice, but admittedly, there are only 3-4 I use occasionally, and only 1 character 'always' uses 1 of 2 (depending on her spec). Everyone else uses mix-n-match armor. So I guess I should have said armor is more important, but I don't want to dis the outfits. :) I have one character that uses skins from Krytan, Viper and Magitech armor sets. They got me to buy 3 different armor sets because I just wanted one piece from each. Uhm...cha-kitten?

More importantly, what is missing is the old mix-n-match clothing. Ideally, I wish they would have added the concept of 'an outfit', but kept 'town clothing'. If you enabled an outfit, it would override the town clothing (I guess?), or maybe an outfit was just a collection of individual pieces that all went together, but then you could mix-n-match them with other town clothing? I like that too.

But really it comes back to some of the great pieces we had before. I used to wear a sleeveless hoodie, gatherer shorts and witches boots, and that was a great outfit.

And I really don't believe (certainly don't care) the explanations they were trying to float for why that couldn't happen, because...it was already happening, and they took it away.

At the 'very' least, they should let us ask for outfits to be built out of some of the old mix-n-match pieces. That would be nice.

In the event I don't get a chance, thank you all for the company and help when I needed it from time to time.

I like having both! Sometimes I like to put on one of my outfits, whether it be to celebrate a holiday or just for fun! Other times I like to have my cool looking armor showing. I miss mix and matching with outfit/clothing pieces though :(

    Both

I like both for different reasons.

    Outfits
I like the convenience of having them always available on all my characters and being able to switch to them and switch between them freely. I also like that they're not bound by armour restrictions - I can use them to put my ele in platemail or my ranger in a long flowing dress if I want to.

I'm kind of ambivalent on the lack of customisation. In a way it fits with the convenience in that I don't have to juggle pieces to make them work and I know each one is a matching 'set' (also some of the outfits I like wouldn't work as separate pieces, like the wedding outfit and noble count on female characters). But it also puts me off some of them because if I don't like the whole thing together I can't do anything about it except not buy it.

I really don't like that there's only 4 dye channels on each outfit and they're very inconsistent - on some the 1st dye channel is the majority of the outfit, on others it's 1 tiny detail and the 2nd or 3rd dyes the whole outfit. That makes it very hard to find a dye scheme that works across all of them, and having to change the dyes each time I switch ruins the convenience. That really puts me off buying more of them. (I also wish they'd bring back the option of having a keybinding to switch between your armour and currently selected outfit.)

    Armour
Pretty much reverse all of the above. I like the freedom to mix and match pieces and dye each one differently and the sheer variety of what's available. I don't like that if I want extra 'sets' I either have to carry them in my bag or spend transmutation charges to change it.

"You can run like a river, Till you end up in the sea,
And you run till night is black, And keep on going in your dreams,
And you know all the long while, It's the journey that you seek,
It's the miles of moving forward, With the wind beneath your wings."

I like both. It depends which character I am playing.

Heavy armor classes always get to wear an outfit, because I HATE the look of heavy armor. It's not cute at all. Urgh.

Medium armor classes and light armor classes get to wear the armor or sometimes outfits too...whatever I like the best at the moment. I like to mix and match armor pieces, but it can get expensive.

  • Armor Skins

not a huge fan of the whole-body outfits, but I am fond of the piece by piece gemstore sets like the foefire armor.

    Permanently Embiggened

  • In a perfect world the armor system is better because it allows more customization. In reality though the armor skins are lackluster and there aren't many sets that I like and struggle to find something for all my characters. Been really thinking of getting an outfit for my charr revenant because I'm sick of using mistward armor (currently using lunatic armor for a nice change). The outfits are higher quality, some have sweet dyable animations, and the dyes look better on them. Trying to use armor pieces from separate sets is difficult to dye uniformly.

Armor skins. Bar none. By using your creativity in creating mix and match parts you can really craft out a personalized look instead of having a boring, and generic look.

  • Armor Skins

Armor because you can mix and match. Also, where were the karma armor sets in PoF like we had in the base game? ArenaNet has dropped the ball for the last few years when it comes to earnable armor in my opinion.

If earnable armor were more prevalent in the game, I may have voted "both".

    Also, RNG lockboxes suck.

  • Armor Skins

I voted armor skins, but if the armors in PoF are representative of what's in store for the future, I'd vote "Neither / I don't care."

  • Both

I like both because I enjoy lvling and making characters. When they are low lvl I love having them in outfits because I do not want to waste transmutes when I will be changing armor out alot. I enjoy the armor skins for fashion wars after I reach the character to lvl 80.

I love mix and matching armour pieces to get a character's look just right, but until I find the look I specifically want for a character I'm really happy being able to cover up whatever ghastly combination of mismatched armour pieces they have on with a nice easy to use outfit.

Best poll I've seen on here so far, I think this really makes it clear what people want, as if we didn't know that already tho right. Sadly, despite the fact that people are hugely in favour of armor skins over outfits Anet will still give us outfits instead and blame it on the difficult to create excuse rather than the real reason which is $$$.

I like both. There are some outfits that go real well with my character and some characters that can put together better armor mixes. Sometimes I just get tired of one look and switch between armor and outfits. Sometimes the need for transmute charges causes me not to change an primary armor look that I really like because I might need to go back to it eventually. So I use and like both. Some outfits don't look good but some are stunning especially with the right dyes. I don't show the head armor most of the time.

I'm going to buck the trend and say outfits.

The reason why is because I play charr, so it's a personal opinion (but then, so is everyone else's vote). Outfits don't tend to suffer from clipping issues; armour skins almost invariably do. So if outfits mean skins that work, I'm going to have to go with outfits.

I find outfits to be so convenient. You just click a button, and it is universally available on all toons, regardless of their armor size.
