  • First, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you devs! I don't talk a lot on the forums, but I've been an enthusiastic pvp'er for 3 years now. I joined GW2 for the pvp and I stayed because of it! So thanks for giving me all these hours!

    When it comes to rewards I def think things are quite fine right now. The combination of league pips and reward tracks are good, and with every daily match (or more) I feel like I'm earning enough loot for me to justify doing them now that I'm making my first legendary (Astralaria!). The only thing I really, really missed with the release of PoF was the addition of the rank tracks we also got with HoT. (like I was hoarding all the pvp potions for them, and then we got only one reward track :( ). The main reasons: black lion keys and finishers.

    I love finishers! I just read that they're much work, so I understand why you didn't went all the way to make 8 new ones. But still, as someone who still plays this game mostly for pvp (although a lot of more pve nowadays), finishers remain the most obvious kind of thing we can do to customize our character and pvp experience. And the more diverse finishers are, the more recognizable your own kill will be on the playing field :). (Also I'd love to see some old ones opened up in the Gem Store, so many cool ones I don't have access to!)

    In general I would lobby for a more diverse and robust reward track system. The current UI is very clunky, and the more tracks get added, the more obnoxious it gets. Maybe start dividing them in tabs such as "HoT Ranks", "Dungeons", "Season 3", etc. I'm just recently completing the Domain of Istan reward track and I really love it! Especially the material crates are a delight to open! So do keep it up in that direction! (the Season 3 ones were really nice as well!)

    Also: a little sink for spirit shards and league tickets?? I have no idea what I have to do with all these tickets & tomes of knowledge....

    Different kinds of skin based on players placement in season leaderbords: top 10 / top 10-25 / top 25-50.
    I think only top 50 deserve a exclusive skin set.

    Plz, never reward players with Llamas anymore, thx ;)

    Personally I think that some additions to the league rewards would be very helpfull to actually "lure" people into pvp, or at least make them give it a shot ...even if just a few stay it ll be good.

    While the current rewards are fine and all, for the vast majority of people they are just another "farm", making pvp-ing itself an completely unenjoyable experience for teammates with a more "competitive" mindset. The rewards - imo - should aim to get people to genuinely give a kitten and making them want to become better.

    I understand that making pvp-exclusive armor/weapons skins would need a good amount of resources, so asking for new skins every season (and maybe even every other) season is just wishful thinking. But even if its just an annual release, this could potentially be helpful to increase the palyerbase (which would help with a lot of things like better matchmaking and whatnot).
    Also....these rewards need to be catered to the lower- and midtier end of the pvp community. From what i heard and feel, legend players and the top 250 players hardly need any incentive to keep playing...prestigious titles and the likes are good enough for them.

    Now to my actual suggestion/question:

    So lets assume there is, for every year/4 seasons (similar to the legendary backpack), a prestigious set of pvp armor that costs X amount of NEW currency, you only receive at the of a season. Let each armor piece only cost 10 currency a piece (equal throughout all armor tiers).....so an entire set for one of the respective armor tiers (Light/medium/Heavy) costs 60 currency.

    The gain of this new currency should be tied to the division a player FINISHED at, at the end of the season.
    Bronze: 15; Silver: 30; Gold: 45; Plat; 60, Legend: 75
    This would mean that even a player that finished bronze in all 4 seasons would be able to obtain at least one full set at the end of the cycle, while a silver player could get a full set for 2 of the 3 respective armor tiers...etc, etc.

    There most likely is a better way to make this currency distribution more appealing for all the divisions but I cant be kittened to think of it atm^^.
    Obviously these armor sets should be very high quality and (as said) pvp-exclusive to give the proper initial incentive for people to get into the gamemode, but with an annual release, this should be manageable I think.

    Right, I'd like to express my humble opinion about this subject.

    PvE Rewards are absolutely wrong in PvP. I'm playing PvP, why the heck shall I get rewards for different game modes? Also, why shall I get rewarded by losing? Takes away all the incentive/effort to push myself over my limits and trying to win the game.

    Nice PvP rewards would be only Aesthetic Skins, doesen't matter if are armor skins or weapon skins (finishers as well). The main purpose should be that I get those rewards only if I win OR I climb the league (Example, I manage to get out from Silver and Reach gold, my effort should be rewarded, **only once **of course).

    Let's have different TOP titles for different seasons, would incentivate even top players to compete between each other because AT LEAST they have something to fight for (Making a mount it's expensive, but a Title? C'mon guys :P)

    And PLEASE, I beg you, don't make rewards grindable with tokens, we all know what it will bring...

    How come the ability to remove the PvP Badges' visibility was implemented in various content?

    I do understand it helps with graphical limitations, but there are people that would probably like to show off their PvP badge that they earned across all the content.

    Unless the badge tiers alone aren't meant to be prestigious enough to be shown off across all content...

    You need a reward structure that is catering to a MMO mentality in which time and effort = rewards.

    I think its essential to offer awesomely unique rewards to top players and top performers to encourage a competitive scene in a MMO which is presently being done.

    What is not being done is rewarding people to keep playing and trying their best to keep a large population with a good culture. Right now, the entire reward reason to play PvP is to win, nothing else matters in terms of reward. This causes the behavior and attitude that if you are losing, you are wasting your time and effort, why am I even playing this? This attitude also leads to unwanted behavior which we all know very well has been more present in recent years, because reward reason to play PvP was added. We went down this path, we have people in a already small population playing PvP not because they enjoy it, but because it offers unique rewards. This is an MMO after all. If you are going to have people lured in by rewards it should be done in a way that encourages behavior we want to see. While I know player behavior isn't a topic or something this team may be able to directly do something about, you can influence attitudes with rewards.

    People need to be rewarded/rated based on team score win or lose
    Be it either done through pips or some alternative system. People need a reward reason to play through the match. Again, a loss if it be 50-500 in 5 mins or 499-500 in 10, the reward value of those matches is the same no matter how much effort was put in. This encourages some people to just quit if the match goes at all badly at the start, why prolong the inevitable if the result is still "I get nothing until I start the next game". If your rating loss is dependent on how hard you get your butt kicked, you bet people are going to at least try to minimize it.

    Reward people for simply playing PvP
    Many players don't play PvP because any type of reward is highly dependent on winning. If your goal is to bring more playing bodies into the mode you need to give some kind of participation reward to bring it in line with playing other modes. What to reward is highly dependent on to balance and discussion. But, even something as small as AP could help. Be it adding more for participating in matches or flipping some of the general competitive achievements from win "x" matches as "X" class to play "X" matches with "X" class, could draw people in and minimize the impact on the economy.

    I'm not going to say never, but probably not? I occasionally toss out crazy ideas on how to have a world championship without the overhead of flying everyone to one place. The only idea I've thought of is do something like have a series of matches played in both regions. Example: Best of 5, where whoever is the higher seeded team has 3 matches played on in their region. As I said, probably a crazy idea that may not be possible to pull off well.

    Mount skins are likely off the table for PvP rewards.

    Unless they will forever be a buy with gems only item I don't see why this should be off the table. You need more players in PvP to fuel your system and rewards is the fastest and easiest way to get people into PvP.

    Once the numbers increase significantly then you have the ability to hold the balance team responsible.

    Do it like the champions league for soccer/football/futbol/however you want to call it.

    If an EU team plays a NA team it's 2 games. 1 on EU servers. 1 on NA servers. You add up the scores and you weight the away points to determine winner

    If 2 NA team go at it you do 1 game as red then 1 game as blue. Straight math on this one due to both being NA

    Obsidian Weapon set
    This is a new competitive weapon set (shared with WvW). The first four weapons of the set will be available on 12/12. The weapons change effects and some detailing based on what team you’re on. (Red, Blue, Green) The set has 2 tiers. The first tier is exotic, tier 2 is ascended. Tier 2 will require grandmaster marks, the same as other ascended rewards.

    unnecessary to put weapons designs in pvp. To the people that we like the pvp, we do not play for the designs but for what pvp means

    in regards to 92% of people making the queue alone. It's easy, it's done alone because you do not let us play as a team of 3 or more people.

    The waiting time in previous leagues that allowed 5 vs 5 varied in proportion to the range, the normal was 2 to 4 minutes.

    I think that if you ask the pvp community with an official survey of the game modes, it would come out that most people would say
    of 75% that if around 5vs5 groups.

    To finish. I think you should implement the option as you had with the strongold mode or normal mode, if people want to queue to play with people who are in a group or not.

    it's simple. Do you want to be paired with people who are in a group? mark yes, they match you, no, they do not match you. Many problems would be solved.

    Can i be honest?
    Your (anet) biggest problem is wanting to reward everyone.

    In the previous league system everybody could easily become legendary. Similarly, everybody can get the "best" mini llama or the glorious set just by playing (quantity, not quality). Such rewards (skins mainly) should be given to the bests only. If everyone get the same thing as me, I'll never be able to be recognized by me rewards. Same way, i'll never be able to recognize who are the bests by their appearance/rewards. Ok, the leaderboards solve part of this problem, but many people don't care to leaderboards and not follow it.

    don't suppose we can have more black lion keys, we had them in tracks and I know they not repeatable but they are farmable in pve and it would be nice to get them as a season reward. one per season reward even if it was just 3-5 keys for reaching the last chest.

    I would appreciate two reward additions/changes:

    1. Improved rewards for Unranked PvP, for instance by adding a pip system similar to WvW and ranked PvP and adding Ascended Shards of Glory to the unranked rewards as well. Currently, unranked game players get lots of regular Shards of Glory via dailies but cannot spend most of them usefully because most purchases also require the ascended versions.

    2. Please allow players who play single-character only to be able to traverse to the Year of the Ascension rewards. Currently Part 1 gets stuck at 10/11 for players who play single character. and therefore the further levels remain locked as well.

    As I mentioned already add ascended shards of glory to tournament rewards and make them more viable.
    We really can’t do much with those.
    I have like 2k or so stacked up and don’t have any use for those.
    Would be very cool if you would give us some more possibilities how we could spend them like to be able to buy bl chest keys or unlocking ingame skins or w/e just some more options would be nice (regards to reward points in Gw1 acquired from AT‘s mAT‘s with which you were able to buy skins).
    Still looking for the gold, silver and bronze trim as reward from the monthly! We should totally get capes as backpiece skins since we literally have some now with pof backpieces.
    Maybe if you que up as guildteam the guild gets a trim or other guild rewards. I like to mention that it’s still GUILD wars

    I don't feel like adding ascended shards to unranked play is appropriate. They are meant to be a reward for participating in leagues. I do think we should look for some rewards that only require Shards of Glory to help here.

I've had previous ideas like trying to get approval to get cultural armor purchasable with a combo of gold and pvp currency. That would be fairly quick, since the assets already exist.

    Capes are problematic. They are difficult to animate well. Especially when it comes to tails. I know we had them in GW1, but animations there were much less complicated, including not having the ability to jump.

    I'm going to make this brief as I'm kind of at work haha, but thought i should at least contribute to the discussion.

    I think one of the main issues with rewards right now for PvP is the minimal incentive to get better at the game and climb the leaderboards. There needs to be increased rewards for players near the top of the leaderboard, besides gaining a fancy title, exclusive armor (that may be only 1 set that doesn't appeal to everyone's tastes) , or a badge next to their name. Possible considerations include just a standard gold reward, gems, gemstore items, and perhaps (though a less promising) greater selection of exclusives that are not simply armor. Most of all, these considerations need to scale with leaderboard rank and your league standing (or MMR?) at the end of the season.

    If this is feasible, I believe this may pretty dramatically increase the active population in PvP, which is perhaps one of the greatest issues in PvP currently.

    Hey Ben,

    Thank you very much for your time answering questions and offering insights in PvP development and pipeline.

    I would like to point out some concerns of mine, hopefully you can take them in consideration in lieau of some discussions here:

    • I definitely would love to see a 2.5 armor set for PvP like you mentioned, but I would like to avoid having it tied to a very exclusive activity such as tournaments. The WvW sets are both rewarding and feasible for all WvW playstyles to different degrees, whereas locking such skins to tournaments would greatly limit their access (speciially when it's not uncommon for the same people to be in the top positions of tournaments). I would like to see something more feasible to players who have enough time on PvP, like something perhaps tied to rank and normal season participation. This offers a time lock rather than a skill lock, which I find more rewarding towards players invested in the mode.

    • In regards to more rewards for class victories, I think that's an awesome idea, but I would be careful to not tailor it towards extreme points (eg. 1000 wins on a class). I think a system that can be focused and worked on is more realistic and rewarding when it comes to these rewards.

    • When we talk about rewards, I think it's important to branch out of ranked, where I feel there are already a number of solid rewards. Unranked is a valid mode too, and I would like to see more progress for playing pvp itself.

    Can we have rewards that award player skill rather than matches played (ascended shards for instance). You can entice PvEers to properly PvP by having a substantial reward when they reach gold tier 2, and further smaller rewards when players reach platinum and even legendary, every season.

    That way, the softcore PvPer will feel rewarded getting to somewhat of a average skill level (gold 2). The current system panders to people just losing games for pips

    Exactly. I think sPvP players don't need "PvE rewards" like ascended/legendary gears, we need EXCLUSIVE rewards which could reflect our skill level.
    Maybe add your skill rating or leaderboards position next to the name.

    As for the Obsidian Weapon Sets.
    Do they Differ per Tier? E.g: Does Exotic one have different appereance than Ascended?
    Also, you mentioned they change Color based on what Team we are in, what do they do in PvE?

    It not counting was actually one of the ways McKenna and I were able to get it approved for PvP and WvW.

    Could you implement some use for excess leaderboard title consumables? Say 5 top 100 title consumables can be redeemed for a special gizmo or tonic or something of that nature?

    Will there be any changes to make Year of the Ascension (YotA) more consistent with the state of the game?
    Year of the Ascension currently is one of the GW2's bigger reward promotions of inexperienced in a Ranked setting where "experience" is pretty much assumed. The current design of it has been questionable to quite a few on the GW2 subreddit and here since it's release.
    1. YotA forces you to play other professions. While I agree it is important to know more than one profession, these days Professions are very flexible in what they can/cannot do well/not well (especially with each introduction of new specializations). In a ranked setting, experience goes a long way...but when you have someone playing ranked with a profession "because they have to for rewards", things get toxic easily.
    2. In PvE and WvW, one can make the same argument that there is value playing multiple professions...however, their Legendary Backpacks don't require it.
    3. There is a inconsistent Prerequisite lock on the rewards: https://en-forum.guildwars2.com/discussion/823/prerequiste-lock-on-year-of-ascension

    _AT Tournament Winner reward: _
    Let's not have one-time exclusives. I think its fine that AT gets unique rewards, but if one team wins something in June 2018, another team can potentially get it June 2019. The unique reward (Sun Gizmo, Moon Gizmo, etc.) should be rotated based on month--is that the case?

    PvP Armor set 2.5
    I think the only concern players had with the PvP armors is that the Legendary armor is cosmetically no different than the prerequisites. Instead "PvP Armor set 2.5" should just be that. This was done with core-game precursors, so it's not impossible to grandfather them into the new look.

    All my alts are just storage for my Engi.

    As a a new player, I think my feedback can be share from a unique perspective that still matter.

    I think we need more ascended shards of glory, as a new player, having my ascended armor only by PvPing require too much time : I need at least 2-3 seasons to be full ascended in grieving stats, which is a lot of time when you look others possible ways to get an ascended armor.

    • When we talk about rewards, I think it's important to branch out of ranked, where I feel there are already a number of solid rewards. Unranked is a valid mode too, and I would like to see more progress for playing pvp itself.

    We're planning 2 tiers of the 2.5 set. One for Leagues and one for top 4 monthly tournament placements. I do think it's valid criticism that we haven't put out much for unranked. I do feel ranked should always be more rewarding, but we could do a bit more for unranked.

Which already makes it weird, since high leaderboard people now get passes to the VIP lobby, but that's not displayed anymore.

    Not basing it on leaderboard position also makes this difficult. Theoretically, someone could play just a handful of games, get a high rating, and then never play again and wait for their end of season reward.

    I understand basing it on the leaderboard position is necessary from a play a little get reward perspective, but I think the what is meant by not basing it on the leaderboard position, means basically extending the end of season rewards way beyond the top 250.

    Altenatively, (And I dunno how possible that is) additional possible conditions to be both eligible for the leaderboard (played the appropriate amount of games), and then get a reward based on the division you're in. I don't think anyone wants division rewards to be about playing a little, getting a high rating but still getting that division reward. Or even then, I don't think I mind having division rewards which are very minimal because you can just play your placement matches, or even better, scale the rewards to the amount of games played where being leaderboard eligible is the max amount (though that can get difficult to balance)

    Additionally, while I do understand rewarding league play the most, off-season is very unpopular (feeling to me anyway), and barely rewarded at all. I find myself extremely discouraged to even care about rating when the league is not up, which then I find it hard to get back into PvP after that. Personally I would prefer leagues back to back, as that just would really be the only time to work on climbing the ladder. Or having something that also rewards me for playing off season. I don't mind if that's not exactly the same reward as within league, but it could be nice to not have everything meaningful come to a halt to then basically stop playing PvP because it's only for dailies, reward tracks and perhaps tournaments (though I havent done those).

    I suppose immaterial rewards, like not needing to play your placement matches the next season (I find it very annoying at least to do that EVERY season) Or keeping your division badge or a title for division could also be considered.

    Two new reward routes:
    Fractal reward route
    3 chests that have rewards from T1 to T3
    Final Chest, rewards of T4 and a weapon of fractals (of the normal ones) to choose from. Repeat once a week.

    And here many will jump to the jugular.
    Raid reward route
    repeatable once a week, that each week is from a different wing (of the 5 that there is currently)
    The reward can be items of the raids and coins of the same.
    The final chest instead of containing clovers, could have 2 Legendary Insights.

    More dungeon reward routes available, at least 3 or 4 every 2 weeks.

    I really, really don't think that's a good thing for the game. I wouldn't want raiders to get Ardent Glorious or Sublime Mistforged (or one of these newly-mentioned Obsidian weapons) for killing one of their bosses.
