    Update! B)

    ** MAC CLIENT**

    • Fixed a bug affecting Intel HD Graphics 3000 hardware that could cause crashes in certain circumstances.

    So, has it gotten better?
Time to play more on a Mac! ;)

Okay, on my less-than-ideal system, MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011), 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5, 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, 512 GB SSD, and does have Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB, I have been playing the 64-bit native GW2 app off an external SSD connected via USB 3.0-->Thunderbolt 2, at home.
The 64-bit app has been occasionally crashing at home, and sometimes failing to launch after clicking the "Play" button in the startup login screen causing black "Untitled" screen freeze which results in a whole system hard reset & restart by long-pressing the power button.
Seems that the update might have actually fixed the system freeze at start, or at least it has not happened to freeze the entire system in a while now. Still occasional GW2 app crash with report window sometimes at random timings.

    So far, so good, maybe?

A side note: Have a slightly better Mac system at work (Mac mini (Mid 2011) 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 & dedicated AMD Radeon HD 6630M 256 MB) as well to play GW2 off this same external SSD... LOVE the portability! And GW2 runs a bit better on this system than my MBP 13, and no system freeze at all, just occasional GW2 app crashes here and there.

But yes, like most everyone complaining here, I would love to have much better graphic performance over all. I know my Mac systems are not up to the minimum requirements, yet the now-obsolete 32-bit wrapped app, or even the bootcamp version performs better than the present 64-bit native app somehow.

Getting there, but not quite yet...

Please keep up the great work!

  • Just installed High Sierra and the game runs much worse then on Sierra ;(

  • That is my experience too @Talek.6795 .

Let us be kind, one to another, for most of us are fighting a hard battle.

My cpu is only utilizing 46% and the fps is 15 to 20 worse than bootcamp. I guess something got tweaked by accident so its running on a single thread?

Yep, same, but only after my MacBook Pro has been asleep long enough to enter standby. I'd love it if the GW2 devs could weigh in on this - is this behaviour they're seeing on 2016/2017 MacBook Pros with Radeon GPUs? If so, if they have any clues about the specific cause I'd love to add them to my open radar with Apple about it.

A restart fixes the performance until it's allowed to do a longer sleep again, and the issue persists in macOS 10.13.2 beta 2.

  • Guys, thank you for these answers. I have MBP retina 2017 with Nvidia GPU.
To achieve the best possible fps on 32 bit client i played on Intel Iris Pro cos Nvidia always had some glitches
But on 64 bit native app i played using Nvidia and after some second or third POF patch with minor fixes to mac client i got really stable and quite enjoyable fps on minimum settings, now i can't even have it ;(

It was a great mistake to upgrade to to High Sierra, and the most annoying think that i can't downgrade. Looking forward to see any updates from Anet or Apple solving that problem. Aside of it i want to thank Anet Mac Team for the native application we all wen use and improve nowadays. Keep up a good work Jon and co <3

  • Hey, it takes me like 5-10 minutes to load a map, some textures and most NPCs are not loading at all. Even on lowest settings.
Can you guys fix this? or just bring back the 32 bit client for Mac, game experience was better playing on this client.

  • Graphics set to lowest and getting 2-3fps, despite my machine being one of the new, higher-end macbook pros [note: this game is the only thing I have ever had issues with on my mac]. Camera control whilst mounted is still a nightmare, in that it just doesn't work with the trackpad, so some of the new content is virtually unplayable. The performance is so horrible I only log in once every one or two weeks now and may simply stop bothering to play altogether, especially considering there's not even been any acknowledgement (that I know of) with regards to performance. Consider me an exceptionally disappointed customer - final mac client feedback score: 1/10.

Since a few months logging into the game on my mac is awful. It keeps saying "Coherent host crashed". After 5 or 6 times, about a minute per try, it finally connects. Anyone? It drives me crazy. Is there anything wrong on my side?

  • The new client improved the performance on 1440p quite a lot i think, coming from a late 2012 27" iMac i have now on my new iMac same size model the same fps as on the old one but at 2880p.

TL;DR Performance on 1440p has significantly improved and is also more stable now(even in big PvE events), i dunno if that is due to the change of the gpus from a gtx 680mx to a pro 580 or if the newer cpu contributed a lot to this.
Now i just wish that the game could MT like when the client is patching (350% cpu usage)

Thanks, that is what I heard earlier. Hopefully it will get resolved soon as it is generally accepted that apple machines are not too far behind on OS updates. I would hate to have to choose between GW2 and support for some other piece of software.

  • I decided to delete the game entirely thinking that there must be a bug or something. Then I went in to my ArenaNet account to download it and now this stupid computer won't let me download the game! and here I thought going to a Mac would be better for me. I just had put the High Sierra OS in so I don't know if that is stopping it or not. Have had a ticket in for a week now and have jumped through every hoop they told me too, but no luck yet. Anyone have any ideas, because I am fresh out and just going crazy trying to make this do what I want it to.

  • @Lady Frostkitst.9307 What Hardware are you using ?

  • Hi guys,

Not sure this bug is specific to this client, but when I teleport to a waypoint, quickly mount and move somewhere, the camera isn't following me.
This bugs occurs since day one of PoF. I can make a video if you need.
Not sure this is related, but when teleporting to specific locations, textures take time to load.

    I have a 15" MacBook retina 2015 (i7, 16GB ram, 750m) running Sierra last version and I use a external GPU (GTX1070).

    Cheers for the good work!

I'm on a late 2015 MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM and since the release of the mac client I've seen its performance slowly improve. It got to the point where I didn't even have to play on the absolute lowest settings anymore. Until.. I updated to High Sierra last week. Now even on the absolute lowest settings I get a max of 9 FPS, which often drops down to 6 FPS just moving around on a map. It literally makes the game unplayable.
In return the game is a lot quieter now because the fans don't go on since the game only uses a WHOPPING 33% OF 1 CPU.

Is this problem caused by the game client or is this High Sierra?
Either way, please help! I want to play!

Edit: I've found a tip online; Restart and then play. This at least helps the FPS a bit (15-20) for me. Apparently there's an issue with the power management of.. something after you let it fall asleep? IDK. Anyway, restarts before you play may help a little.

  • Hello,
I still have an issue with the cursor being to small, because I play on an retina display, but want to keep UI scaling disabled, since playing in lower resolution is just fine.
I also don't think there is any mac, that could handle a resolution where ui-scaling would be necessary.
I want the cursor scaling to be bound to the system scale, not the ingame option.
    Anyone else has this issue?!

There have been performance issues reported with High Sierra. I am guessing I am not the only one begrudgingly holding off upgrading my OS until that is resolved.

If you have access to a desktop, ideally with Sierra, try it on that. If not put sierra on a detachable drive and boot from that on your MBP. I never got good performance with the 32 bit client on a MBP so only used it when I did not have my desktop.

  • Still having the same issues as I reported here a few weeks ago. It all started after the Oct. 17 update. Everything was fine before that. Something in that update caused the graphics and loading times to change. I'm still sinking into the ground when getting on my mounts and if I move the camera does not follow. It takes several mins for everything to load. Some maps take longer. This seems to be a collision number issue with the mounts. When spawning the mount it looks like the collision number activates on a timer then corrects itself sometime after.

The rest of the graphics take a long time to fully load. and each map seems to be different for the loading times. Due to this it creates problems for joining squads or parties as they are often long gone into the distance or finished killing whatever mob they are after before I have loaded enough graphics to join in.

The other issue is when changing dye colours in the dye window my cursor has to go to the colour below the one I want to use in order to change the dye.

All of these issues I'm having are since that Oct. update. I love this game but these problems make it difficult to play. As a result I haven't been playing as much as I used to. Hopefully you can resolve the issues before to long. We all appreciate everything you're doing to make the game better for the mac.

    I'm using ...
    Sierra 10.12.6
    iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017)
    3.4 GHz intel Core i5
    8 GB 2400 MHz DDR4
    Radeon Pro 570 4096 MB

  • On a retina screen it would be nice if window mode wouldn't use 1 to 1 resolution, but the same 2x as in fullscreen, for performance reasons.

Your issues with the game sound very similar to mine. I made a post on page 6 of this thread about my problems. My game started messing up and I reported it to Anet on 10/6/17. I have jumped through hoop after hoop, done everything they asked me to do to fix the game, and yet it still does not work! I get the impression they think something is wrong with my computer but my computer passed every test they posed. The mac client is the issue. They need to fix it, or bring back the 32-bit client, or refund peoples money.

I feel your pain Zepa Chi Lee!
I am hopeful that these issues everyone is having will get resolved soon. We just need to be patient I guess.

One other thing is that the sound also takes awhile to load along with the graphics. I know it's not my computer because it's only just over a month old and I don't have any of these issues when I try other games. It's only in GW2. I also don't feel that I should have to buy a detachable drive and install the game on it to get the game to work properly. It's supposed to work on the mac in the first place and it did work at least for me before that Oct. update messed it up.

  • So after almost a week of these issues, I've concluded that my problems are definitely caused by High Sierra and not the game client. This is because the game only experiences issues when I start it up after it being put to sleep. Apparently, it's a power management thing that is a known issue for High Sierra.
The game works pretty much as before if I restart my computer and then start the game.

    Thanks for your reply, leoh.7239!
And other than the issue you've encounter, how is the overall game play of Guild Wars 2, with your external GPU setup?
If a working system, following that as much as possible should be the shortest way to a successful & effective setup, I presume.

  • I've been having issues with my desktop, but not my laptop (despite my laptop not being nearly as powerful). It doesn't matter which map I am in or what graphic settings I have my game set at, I constantly will crash and have horrible loading time. The desktop is running OS Sierra 10.12.6 and is a mac mini from late 2014. It has a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 processor with 8 GB of memory and Intel Iris 1536 MB graphics card. Most times the game completely crashes with no error message and won't close completely (the application is shown as running but is completely gone and I have to manually kill it with the Activity Monitor). The game crashes in core areas as well as expansion areas with varying numbers of people. Other than that however, fps is smooth though, which is great! The game doesn't run as well on my laptop though (cries.... 10 fps at lowest settings) so I would love for this issue to be addressed.

  • Hello,
I've been using the Mac 64 bit client since September and I LOVE it. I haven't DCd while in a world event in weeks. There is one odd thing though that keeps coming up. I like to design characters and the login screen and character designer (vendor/makeover kit) shows some odd graphic distortion to the human and norn character models and to the way clothing is rendered. The models seem to be mostly fine in game. The texture maps on the character models seem off - see the nose/eye area, the neckline and the fingers. You can clearly see the seams in the texture map and weird crinkling around the eyes. The ambient occlusion and specular maps (or normal mapping) seem off also - sometimes the way raised elements are displayed seems inverted (areas that push away from the model instead are receding into the model. I noticed this particularly on the sylvari model where the leafy parts that should be raised away from the body were instead displaying as gouges IN the body.

I had screen shots but was defeated by the inability to add images to the post or link from Google photos.

Again, I'm still loving the Mac 64 bit client! Thanks.

I recognize some of the problems the others are facing. Maps take rather long to load, but the most annoying thing are the really long loading times for mobs, npcs, minions, mounts, player models and sound effects. With group events none of the player characters will load, not even when the event finished. I only see the 'placeholder' model.
Strange thing is the skimmer mount loads immediately, but the others all take a while. My character sinks into the ground and the camera will stay in place.
Sound effects are often completely gone too.
Walking into an unknown area (I'm a pretty new player so haven't discovered everything yet XD) is impossible: It seems the area is clear and I walk in when suddenly my healthbar lowers and surrounded by mobs. Have died several time because of this.

Highest fps was 40(rare). Sometimes drops to 8. Often around 20. Graphics are all on low, render sampling on native.
After a few hours of playing it runs a bit better for a few minutes, then it runs really smooth and even loads mounts, mobs, npcs and sounds fast.

Good things are: my mac is really silent and doesn't vent loudly anymore. It doesn't get super hot immediately and crashes seemed to have disappeared.
It's playable but the 32-bit was much smoother and i could do group events easily. Just hoping all the problems will be fixed by the macteam so that it runs like the 32-bit did.

I'm on a Mac mini (late 2012) High sierra 10.13.1
    2,3 GHz Intel core i7
    4gb 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel HD graphics 4000 1536 mb

So since the LS chapter is out, I decided to see if it was any good. Took 3 minutes to load into the game (Lion's Arch), then I was swimming in air (no visible water), then the water appeared after a minute or so. But still most NPCs are invisible, and even my character became invisible at some point. The sound effects lag as well. This isn't much better than what it was during launch. What the hell is going on? Are you guys even working on this? It's been months.

It's nice to know that some people are apparently having an "amazing" time playing the game, but how does this justify leaving the rest of us to rot? We paid money for this game, too, you know? Going 'screw you, got mine' isn't really a nice attitude to have.

  • The Mac client works way better than ever on old maps but the first map of season 4 is really hard on my fps for some reason.
And my second issue was that every in-game cutscene didn't load. (SPOILER) When the commander wakes up in the cell, or when braham and rox join you in the final instance.
The only thing I saw looked like the camera was under the map and nothing was there except a few mountains. The second was the overall performance. For some reason whenever I was on the platforms in the final encounter with scruffy 2.0 the fps went below 15. All graphic settings on low. Going somewhere else in the instance made the fps go up to 30. Would love if that would get fixed so we can see the (probably) beautiful cut scenes. (Pre rendered worked fine)

My system is an iMac late 2017, i7, 2GB Nvidia GTX, 32GB RAM.

  • Running on a Retina MacBook Pro 15" 2015 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD w/ AMD Radeon R9 M370X 2GB and running macOS High Sierra 10.13.1 and the 64 bit client runs ok. I can get 60+ FPS if I lower the graphics setting and lower the resolution to 1280x960. Hoping for further optimizations and tweaking by the developer of the 64 bit Mac native client, and I hope they will support Metal 2 for better Mac graphic performance. Keep up the good work guys!

  • I have a new bug, that has not been discussed yet:
My cursor is still to small since i play on retina, but have UI-scaling off. I tried to workaround by increasing cursor size in System Preferences -> Accessibility -> Display -> Cursor Size. The ingame cursor is indeed bigger, but now while i move the cursor, the fps rate drops to about a half. (Feels like the map pan issue.)
Then I discovered, that the larger cursor moves with a small delay on macOS while GW2 is started. I think that it is an error in macOS's cursor handling...

It's been a little while since I last posted, so I'll give you all a bit info on what we're working on:

    • We're still investigating long loading times and the reported excessive storage media reads. No ETA for fixes, if any.
    • The cursor being small when DPI Scaling is off is expected as this shares behavior with Windows.

  • The 'Coherent Host Crashed' issue has gotten exceedingly worse since the most recent update. Usually, if I have the problem I simply restart the app a few times until it runs. As of recent, I am completely unable to play. Clearing cache and other typical fixes have not worked and I do not plan on re-downloading the game every time I want to play. It's starting to get to a point where I will be looking at playing another game.

  • First up, thanks for the Mac client and all the work you guys are putting into it. I realize we're a very small part of the market and all this is greatly appreciated.
Just some things I've been running into lately:
A lot of flickering/flashing is back on certain textures/objects on the new map. Annoying but not game breaking.
Cutscenes. For some reason the cutscenes (prison break, dramatic rescue) in LWS4 weren't loading in fully. They were just chunks of sky. I had the same problem on the cutscene at the end of the first story instance of PoF, but on the second playthrough it loaded in fine. (I played through the old LVS2 stuff with a friend and those cutscenes all loaded fine on the same day.)
Specs: OS 10.12.6, late 2013 imac, 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB, fusion drive.

  • Okay so I noticed after the last build the camera with the mount works correctly now. Mostly my character is still in the ground but at least I can move better now that the camera follows. Anyone else has this too?

  • just want to say thanks for the attention on the 64-bit client - ultimately will be worth all the work as it will add to player base

This is now the biggest issue I have with the client as it is. I'd love to hear an official comment as to whether this is a driver issue for nVidia, or a client issue.

  • I had this problem. Do you load 64-bit client? That was my problem. It appeared I was still on the 32-bit version.

I think i'll go to a huge downgrade this weekend

  • Since the small cursor on Retina displays is intended, I found a nice workaround. Select Guild Wars 2 64-bit.app and hit CMD+I. Set "Open in Low Resolution". Now I can play as always since no mac on earth could handle retina resolutions.

  • Chaps, today i tried El Cap & Sierra but the same badstory with the performance. Looks like this is the game issues with the latest patch ;((( i spent a day for testings

Hopefully it will get resolved soon. While on windows people are often years out of date it is less common in the mac world .... which means other programs on the machine tend to drop support for previous OSs more quickly.

edit: Also when people buy new hardware it typically comes with the latest version of the OS so pretty soon nearly every mac user will be on high sierra unless they specifically downgraded, which is not always possible.

Have you tried resetting the PRAM and SMC? There's a looooong standing problem with Macs where performance can be slow after sleep, which sometimes can be resolved by doing this. Both my retina Macbook pro and iMac used to suffer from this.

  • Today there actually seemed to be an improvement in performance, for me. It was still seriously, horribly sputtery in crowded situations (Auric Basin meta, Palawadan raid) but I was dreading the Verdant Brink dailies because the map is usually painfully laggy. And tonight it wasn't. Ran around feeling like I was back in the 32-bit version. Did I have a good night, or was something tweaked?
