PC, and I was just standing there doing nothing.

  • RAB.7682RAB.7682 Member ✭✭

I see this a lot in my crash reports too:

Debug token '0x00000000000266FA': Lightning ran out of space for new bolts.

This crash is 2018 and my previous original post was back in 2017, it seems the issue has still not been resolved.

  • RAB.7682RAB.7682 Member ✭✭

It seems whatever this "lightning" is from, whether it be a skill, an item, the sky? (I do not know), but it appears to cause the game to crash whenever it occurs.

  • RAB.7682RAB.7682 Member ✭✭

    Also worth noting:

    • I have done -repair and -verify multiple times and it detects no errors.
    • I have uninstalled and reinstalled and completely re-downloaded the huge gw2.dat file.
    • Making sure my graphics drivers (and other drivers) are always the latest stable version.

So, none of that resolves the issue.

Thanks for looking into it. I'm good with computers, so if you need me to perform any geeky/technical tasks, I'm willing to do so.

  • Is your character in the PoF zone where you get random lightning strikes when you're in/near the brand?

I am running Win7 x64, but used to get those errors often. In my case, it turned out that Malwarebytes was causing it. If you have it installed, you could try removing it to see if it fixes your error too. Since uninstalling Malwarebytes, I have not gotten one of those errors.

  • I don't think the 'Lightning' nor the 'Bolts' referenced in the crash report has anything to do with actual lightning in-game.
You see that reference in almost every complete crash report posted, and have since Core launch, no matter the issue.

No, I was standing in Lion's Arch during one of them. It is not map dependent. it has occurred on many different maps.

Also maybe worth noting: I see in reading other people's post, that many of the people that receive this crash, are unable to obtain crash information for this report, either due to their PC locking up, or more so their lack of technical skills. To a novice, the game may appear to have locked up the entire computer, however background processes still continue to run, so only the game has locked up. While I am unable to tab out or close the game normally, I am however able to SSH into my computer from my Android and use command-line to regain control over the PC, either by killing the Gw2 process, or using the "reboot" command, which is a much preferable way to reset the PC vs using a hard power reset, which doesn't allow files to properly close on the system, and can result in orphaned file stubs.

Or, it's a coding term that applies to many, many different aspects of the game. Just as the term 'bones' and 'orphan' don't specifically refer to bones or orphans in-game.

Yes, I have seen that "lightning" reference for years now (even pre-HoT). Also, it doesn't seem to be the cause of the crash. If you look the log file even when the game works normally you will see that line a lot. Possibly it's just an info line added to the log to help devs to track down what caused an issue (given the "funny" way it describes the "issue". As Inculpatus said maybe it's just a coding that only devs know what it means).

The fact of It being the first line in the log doesn't necessarily means it was the cause, just it was the last "issue" that occurred and the game was able to log before the crash. It's even possible that the game had no time to add what caused the crash to the log.
Take some more look at the log and you will occasionally find some other "funny" entries there (can't recall from top of my mind).

P.S.: Yes, one can notice that I think "Lightning ran out of space for new bolts" a funny sentence.

Oh btw, I just noticed a thing. If I recall right usually "Coherent UI host" is related to a process used to show the Trading Post or any web based interface/panel in game (like Guild Treasure, Expansion announcement etc). If you were standing at LA I supposed you were dealing with Trading Post at some point.

  • Hey friends,

We're still investigating. The "Lightning" has been determined at this point to be a red herring, so don't worry about that part. Our team is going through the crash logs from reports and believe there are two different crashes currently happening. There are two threads open on what folks believe to be the same crash - but some of the reports that are older are actually fixed (despite similar text in the logs you share with us). But some more recent reports have reported two crashes that we've not dealt with yet, so the team is currently looking into how to repro the crashes and then hopefully provide a fix. <3 Thanks everyone!

Having the same error. Didn't happen at all yesterday and happened 5 times so far today (WvW only). I did a repair and thought it fixed it but after almost two hours I got the error again. Can't say I was doing anything special, this last time I was actually AFK at keep and grabbing a snack so not using skills or anything (but enemy capped keep and killed me).

Is Anet still looking into this issue, or have they forgotten about it?

  • Yifang.8260Yifang.8260 Member ✭✭

Indeed coherent is the process for our trading post and it's very volatile I despise it, much preferred Awsomnium, the former tp host pre autumn 2014 often didn't load fully so needed a game restart but the game still runs otherwise whereas Coherent is a babel to be kind, if Coherent crashes that kills the game. Why I became aware of Coherent was it caused me no end of grief especially within the first weeks of it's inception, I had over 100crashes of trying to run the tp and by chance when trying troubleshooting suggestions from Anet support I was able to not crash when using the tp, noticed then I did not have a browser open and that significantly keeps the host more stable. It's unusual, it's more stable now but the game definitely slows down with a browser open (So I do not use /wiki) compared to using the Awsomnium host, this would be an issue for older machines though, I've asked around people with newer or more powerful machines do not have such issues, nevertheless Coherent is a far less stable and resource hogging process than need be. If you've never experienced problems with it, just terminate the coherent.exe process and see the client crash… The mobile tp we have in GW2 is a blessing and curse vs other mmos, I don't recall many issues with mmos that had a static trading post and they certainly run faster however it is cool to be able to trade stuff when on the go to clear inventory etc rather than having to find a town every time… Coherent crashes aren't restricted to using the tp it can crash anytime and I think apps like Skype or teamspeak have a chance to crash it (Anything web related), with the client changed for PoF it's sadly typical for me to coherent crash when even just opening the client, this often would be at least 2 in a row of crashes…..

One way to cut down on many crashes would be if Anet stop the coherent host crashing the game if the process dies. Awsomnium never crashed my game if the host wasn't working so why should Coherent? I'm not an expert but I think the Awsomnium era didn't put all the eggs in 1 basket (1 process, Awsomnium iirc were a few processes, which annoyingly often doesn't all startup so would need a client reboot but everything else ingame would work) whereas Coherent has, also the Coherent tp uses gaudy huge text and is considerably slower to do anything its only plus side are aesthetics though I don't see that as a plus, I pick efficiency for trading over colourful big text anyday.

To finish off 1 thing that's always bugged me, well 2 crash reports. 'Success' and 'Succeeded', what stupid names for crash reports surely a good one to incite anger for the user, anyone knows what the heck these reports mean? I can't see crashing a game as a success!

  • Hey friends,
A few fixes have been tried internally, but they didn't provide the results we need for the fix. We're still investigating at this time. Thank you for your patience while we dig into this!

I run into the same issue and have been getting these freezes since last year at the same time of your original post. Only thing that I have found that seems to work 100% of the time is don't run the game windowed with a defined resolution. It seems setting it to full screen windowed vs full screened windowed xxxx-xxxx seems to prevent the crash. For a test I ran 30 days with it set one way and 30 days the other and had 0 freezes during the time without a defined resolution but when switching it back went back to crashes and freezes. This is without changing anything else of the PC to try and keep it apples to apples. Not sure what settings you are using but if you are running it with a defined resolution, try that and see if that works for you. Good gaming!

I shouldn't have to do a workaround, the game should work properly in all modes.
Also I tried this suggestion and the game still crashes.

These crashes happen every other day. I thought this might be related to heavily overclocking my RAM (its 4266-17-17-17-28 and tuned sub timings also), but Memtest with 12 instances runs perfectly without errors for hours. So I guess it is more likely that something with the game is wrong.

I also have ArcDPS with ArcDPS mechanics addon installed, so I am usually not sending in crash reports (as the ArcDPS author suggested), but maybe it helps

Indeed coherent is the process for our trading post and it's very volatile I despise it, much preferred Awsomnium, ...

Awesomium crashed often too, I can't see how it was any better.

Oh dear, I never had a single crash from it. Certainly it was infinitely better for me.

Some other crashes with the same symptom and exception, but different memory addresses:

Did you ever try to just test the memory of your computer? All I can see is "Anet fix this!!!" but eventually it's not their problem but yours?

With Windows 10 Microsoft has a built in memory tester which you can run during the next restart. Otherwise you can load MemTest onto a USB stick and boot it.

Was I able to help you or give you a hint? Click on Helpful and/or Thumbs up, I would appreciate it alot!
When you encounter a bug ingame, at first you should file a ticket via the ingame command /bug, as only this way the devs will know exactly where you were, when the bug happened.

I have also c0000005 errors after I got my new pc a few weeks ago. I have freezing issues with GW2 and with AC Origins, but not every time. I did run the built in Windows memory tester and my memory was fine. In my case I think the problem is related to a memory issue with my video card as it only happens when I run a more memory intensive game. c0000005 is a very common error code that can point to a lot of issues. And in my case Anet is probably not to blame :) Still, it is nice to look at this forum to see if they have an idea what could be wrong. Anet knows more about gaming programming and what can go wrong than I do.

Getting this constantly since the patch : (

  • I've also been getting crashes.

First it was totally freezing and hard crash with a restart required.

I changed my settings from High to Medium and that solved it... for about 1.5 hours.

Then I got the crash similar to everyone else here.

Different address, similar effect, same Exception...

    The log is below...

    BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMP!

Seriously, i can't play this game anymore... cant go more than 30 mins without a crash. tried everything.. about to give up and quit the game honestly... I can't finish any stories, its an utter waste of time right now. Literally got to the final scene in Victory or Death and... freeze.. GG

Tech support where are you? You stated you were looking for a fix?!?!?!

  • Just returned. Downloaded game. First launch was good. FPS was about 200-280
Second launch FPS 40-110 and these error after 2 min of game...

Same here. Starting playing again this weekend. First 5 hours or so were fine. Next day, started getting crashes like this, sometimes just logging in or at the character selection screen. And just 15 minutes ago, this error right after doing the repair on client. Seems that it is a lost cause and the game is not playable.
FWIW: 8th gen i7, 32GB ram, RTX 2060 6GB and Samsumg NVMe evo plus M.2 sata drives.

"Memory could not be read" suggests:

    • It could be a faulty RAM (run a check).
    • Your assigned Virtual Memory is insufficient.
    • Could be an issue with a Windows or graphics driver. Run a System File Scan, update drivers.
    • Clean your system of any junk (use CCleaner and Windows' Disk Cleanup).
