How do you spend your gold?

Do you hoard a lot of gold before a big purchase? Or do you spend the little bit of gold you earn every day? I'm belong to the latter and I'm curious about your habits.
Also what's the next thing you're saving gold to buy on TP?

I save my gold until I have enough for the next thing I want, then I buy it and drop back to almost zero (or on two occasions literally zero - not even 1 copper in my wallet), then I start saving for the next thing. I do have a mental list of things I want to buy but I go through it in order of priority, not cost, so sometimes I'll spend months saving a few hundred gold (yes it takes me that long) even though there's some things I want which are much cheaper.

The only exceptions are when something new comes along which is cheaper than what I was saving for (like when I bought the Mini Lunar Horse because it won't be available for long) and when I'm working on a collection or crafting project and I'm not sure how much it will cost or what exactly I'll need to buy. Right now for example I've just started working on a new legendary so I'm trying to save all my gold to put towards the materials I'll need. But because I'm taking my time and not doing it in order (haven't finished the first tier collection but I'm already making ascended materials) I don't know exactly what I'll need to buy and what I'll gather/find along the way, so I have to hold onto the gold until I need something I don't have enough of (and I decide it's easier to buy it than farm it).

  • When i 1st joined, i spent all my gold to gems to buy LWS unlocks and other gemstore accouny wide stuff upgrades and copper fed and infinite logging tool and some fashion stuff like 1 glider skin.

Now im just saving my gold to get a legendary, only at 278g only atm :/ The highest gold ever had at one time.

I hoard my gold and mats and karma so I can get big 'sink' items when they are released, like the griffon, Aurora. I bought the precursor for Bifrost years ago for like 700g. Not really interested in doing any more legendary weapons at this point.

In the event I don't get a chance, thank you all for the company and help when I needed it from time to time.

  • At the moment, my gold is dribbling away at ranking up crafters. When that's done, I kind of want to unlock skins--like the faction skins, and cultural skins. I also have started on crafting Bifrost and Incinerator, and plan to go on with those at some point. So my gold is tied up for the forseeable future.

I only spend gold for waypoints; have all I want and need - and the first time ever I feel really chilled.
Still get the shivers thinking of how I was permanently broke in FF14 or even MapleStory 11 years back then.
It forced me away from what I want in these games: Fighting and killing. The saviour of the world going into the woods to forage for naturals like a hobo?? Pfft.

Save it for big purchases. I already bought most if not all of the cheap dyes and minis off the Trading Post, so now I just let it pile up for when I need it. I'll be wanting it for the current character I'm leveling. Plan to dress her in tier 3 cultural. If not for that, I want the Glittering Greatsword for my Chronomancer.

Previously, a lot whent to gems for shared inv slots, character slots, bank slots, gathering tools etc. Now, it's basically saving up toward legendaries. I get it quite slowly however, so LNY is a welcome boost!

Usually, I spend in trickles - make small buy orders often. However, as Astralaria and the coming longbow are competing with getting the Griffon, it's a bit more save-and-burst atm.

I extremely rarely have more than 150 gold.

Tend to spend as I go. Or buy gems with the extra gold. Have bought a lot of useless pets and dyes over the years.

Would save up for legendaries but not really interested in any beyond the ones I have.

I'm only missing some 20-30 rare dyes. Everything else unlocked. So I tend to buy as many dyes as I can afford... haha

  • Hi, fellow Tyrians,

my gold goes straight into my guild hall. Though we have no housing I just thought big and took a few guys to claim my own guild hall. I don't need every upgrade (wvw and pvp-guild missions don't make sense for a single person, also etherium mining speed) but bringing everything visible on restoration level 2 (which makes actual buildings from the ruins) takes a lot of stuff. So there go all my mats and all my gold.

If you are looking for gold and material sinks (reddit says we desperately need those /s) and if you want not just housing but ...mansioning have yourself a guild hall.

Oh, and if you want to decorate... there goes even more gold and stuff. ;)

  • I save up around 200g then lose control of my wallet and buy discounted outfits that I'll never use

  • i divide em one gold piece at a time, put em on a vault, wear my swimsuit on and jump on a diving board in the vault to my sea of gold.

but in reality i just hoard gold... i just hoard everything... gold champ boxes mats

please release me, let me go

    Yes. ;)

Also what's the next thing you're saving gold to buy on TP?

The thing I always try to save gold for is: Wintersday presents. Sure, I get nice stuff for me, too. I just make sure that I have enough saved to buy some nice things for friends, too.

I do that sometimes by hoarding gold to make a bunch of purchases at once, sometimes by acquiring things during the year to store & send in December, and often, by putting in lowball buy orders initially ... and then relisting at increasing amounts as I can afford it.

Hype is the path to the dark side. Hype leads to unfulfilled expectations. Disappointment leads to anger. Anger leads to disgust. Disgust leads to "oh, new shinies! I'm back!"

I have a base amount I won't pass, and once I've got a buffer over that I will do some shopping/crafting. You always want a decent base amount in case an opportunity or bargain comes along.

I think my account is worth around 60k gold and I only have two legendaries lmao so I would say that I don’t wait long. Instead, I have big goals and little goals. I work towards my big goal while focusing on little goals as I go. I have 3 precursors so those are my big
Goals which I got a good amount of stuff for, but when other cool things pop up, they deviate me as they become my little goals. To be honest though I’d say I’ve achieved most of what I want. All that’s left is the precursors, finish nevermore, get ad infinitum, and then I’d probably stop all together on collecting skins and just do wvw and spvp.

  • Jojo.6140Jojo.6140 Member ✭✭✭

Im just saving it up for every black lion chest update and then buy the cheap dyes and weapon skins that come in them from the TP to complete my collection. Other than that, not much to spend it on for me atm.

Most of my gold gets spent on black lion ticket skins.

I don't hoard my gold before purchasing big items. Example: I'd rather buy a full set of alchemist skins while they are cheap, than buy a FoeFire's essence. (not that specific weapon, just an example)

I am mostly hanging comfortably around 40-60 gold; if I need some fast money (like with the griffon) I clear out my material storage in a burst. The 2 gold I get from the dailies I save in a private guildbank, no exception.

I used to spend it little by little until I had two full ascended sets, a Viper and a Berserker for my Mesmer after that i mostly hoarded it since i didn't come across something i cared for and also gambled a bit... unsuccesfully until i came up with the idea to make Eternity, all my income is currently going there.

  • My standard practice is to keep 500 gold stashed in the trading post in the form of a buy order. That is used for expensive, new items that arrive in the game (like infusions or the Griffin) and saved up again after it’s spent. I buy 400 gems whenever I have enough gold for that.

I have a fixed minimum amount of gold that I do not touch. It shall cover in case I decide to go for an extraordinary invest like paying for the precursor of a legendary weapon or affording a very expensive item at BLT or spending gold for a big amount of gems to get something I want from the shop. Aside of it, all what I earn at the top of that secured amount is used. I rebuild small amounts of gems, I invest into equipment for my chars, I buy dyes... It is a bit based on mood and needs. :)

I'm out of my mind, feel free to leave a message...

    My behavior changes, it seems.
First, I hoarded everything without ever getting any lucky drops or farming anything, slowly making my way towards 300g.
After some time, I had enough mats to craft Predator, which I then sold, leaving me with enough gold to get me the Griffon, buy lots of fluff and cool skins. Even converted quite a chunk to gems to get some mountfits.
Right now, I'm in hoarding mode again, saving up for those mats I'm gonna need whenever the next legendary GS hits (if it doesn't look like a surfboard with christmas deco, that is).

I used to spend most of my gold on new characters, runes, sigil, etc.

While not as bad as in other MMOs in the past, it took a while to craft my first legendary 4.5 years ago (Twilight for my mesmer). That's when I noticed the true value of using gold to make gold, so I sold the first Twilight. Actually this might be more related to converting materials into gold like Gifts of Exploration and Obsidian Shards.

Ever since then I've been up and down but I try not to drop below 500 liquid gold (I don't use the TP since I can restrain myself) and will usually hover around 1-3k gold having spent most of my gold the last 2 years on legendary items (3 armors, some weapons, fractals back pack, Aurora, etc.).

I do occasionally invest into TP items but haven't been to active or investment heavy for a while. Buying complete cheap Black Lion Weapon Sets and then using the gained 7 Tickets to recuperate the gold from more expensive sets is the only thing I do regularly.

I spend most of my gold for my characters. I've been playing for around 1 year by now, but I still need some ascended sets and a lot of ar-infusions. I'm kinda lazy, so every character gets multiple sets with 150 ar even though I could transfer gear to other characters. Of course then there are cosmetics. Had to get the full equinox-set lately, crafted two legendary weapons by now and seven armor-pieces and stuff like nightfury.

    I'm constantly broke btw. xD

"There is always a lighthouse, there's always a man, there's always a city."

  • I've been saving up gold for Dawn to finish my legendary for a looooong time now, but something else ALWAYS comes up before I've saved enough. "Oh, this build looks awesome, I have to gear up yet another alt and try it out!" "Oh, I MUST get that skin to complete my look!" "Oh, THIS item is finally on sale in the gem store, time to convert!"

Honestly, I'm just going to throw actual money at it when I can spare it, because gold never stays in my purse.

  • There's always something....griffons, commander tags, legendaries...finishing off my collection of cultural armors is my priority just now, but only till some other expensive item catches my eye.

  • Gehenna.3625Gehenna.3625 Member ✭✭✭✭

I just finished leveling all crafting professions and am crafting ascended armor and weapons for my main characters. There's a lot of materials that go in that, so I do part gathering and part buying. The only other thing I still probably want to get is the griffon mount but I'm not in a hurry. Since the ascended gear is also based on time gated components, I have no choice but to pace myself...which is probably a good thing, though it is a pain that you can only get one charged quartz a day since I wanted one set of celestial gear which works quite well for my guardian in open world.

But by pacing it, I do a small bit of crafting a day which costs me a few gold in materials I miss after gathering for a while and I do a few things to gain some gold back. In the end now that my crafting professions are done I can sort of stay at the same amount of gold...which is significantly less than before I bought the chaos longbow skin and a couple of glyphs. But to be honest, once the crafting is done and I have the griffon I won't need so much gold cause I'd spend it on the occasional skin and none of the legendaries actually appeal to me, so I'm not bothered about that stuff.

Hmm, I decided, for no reason whatsoever that I wanted to craft all the pres. I have now finished all of the tier 1 collections so am working on getting stuff for crafting the lowest experimental weapon. I am also getting stuff to craft my legendary armor (2 pieces left to craft). Finally I am buying up items for when I decide to advance my pres into actual legendaries.

  • The only planning for my gold that I actually do is to see whatever my new level 80 at the time needs in exotics. I don't bother trying to shoot for Legendaries. To me, they're not a priority as I can't seem to find a guild I'm happy with and can raid with. And to be fair, I don't like raiding anyway. So my gold stash is usually somewhere between 15G to 100G. Though I do want the gryphon mount, so I'll have to work on saving more for that.

My gold goes on crafting. I like to be running Meta builds, but I also like to try out builds too. Don't think I will happy till I either craft every stat you will ever need or I find a way to finally upgrade my WvW set. I also love crafting weapons for the same reason.
More to the point I don't like having 'naked' characters.

  • Most I've ever had at one time is between 1700-1800 gold. As far as I remember, I've never bought gold with gems.

I do however do the reverse: I drop my hard-earned gold and convert it to gems if I see something I like crop up in the gem store. It's where I spend most of my gold. I'm currently down to 170g, thanks to a few mount skins, the new dragon throne, and a whole bunch of Black Lion keys.

  • Taelac.7036Taelac.7036 Member ✭✭✭

I use a mix of things. Any time I break a new 100, I make that my running "floor," where I'm willing to spend anything over that on whatever takes my fancy, or to quickly restock my materials hoard or finish out a stack of something I need for whatever legendary I've got in the works. Once I get within 25 gold of the next 100, I start working on reaching that new threshold, and sometimes will sell off spare stacks of mats to do that more quickly.

I'm also working a little at a time on buying the three most expensive items for the Treasure Hunter collection, so I have low buy orders in for those that I add between 1 and 3 gold each to when I think about it and it won't drop me below my floor amount. I still haven't managed to get the Chalice of Rhendak to drop, so I'm in no hurry there, and if one of those three drops for me in the meantime, I'll split whatever I've built up toward that between the other two.

I buy either 1 or 10 Icy Runestones any time I do the Claw of Jormag event, depending on how much over my floor I have, so I never have to drop 100 gold at once when I'm making a legendary. I also don't get serious about crafting a new legendary until I've passively accumulated at least 200 T6 trophies, by which time I've usually also made a pretty good dent in piling up the other materials I'm going to need.

That usually means that when something requiring a significant outlay pops up, like the griffon or the steamroller mini collections, I've got the coin to drop on it. I really only do any grinding for gold when we're getting close to a new episode dropping, since I like to get the new home node the first day, and I try to make sure I've added at least 100 gold to my wallet make sure I've got the 50 for the node covered, plus a little extra banked in case there are other things to buy in the new content.

    Good luck, have fun.
