Eye pain is just a side effect of what the bright lights and flashes are for and thats it for keep u playing longer. Like in a Casino u get constant stimulated by blinking and bright lights. The conspiracy theory i have here is anet doin this on porpuse to make u extend ur play time.

I just hope anet can overthink that and find better ways to archive ppl play longer

Yes, serious. Post-off, low settings, filtered specs.

It is specifically pof era stuff causing the problem. Flashy garbage in istan at night, volatile magic flash in thk. Cannot be disabled.Sheer stupid design that they haven't acknowledged. It is headache-inducing for some people.

If this is a constant problem for you it might be worth adjusting your monitors settings so the brightness isn't so uncomfortable for you. You will probably need to adjust the contrast and colour balance as well, if you just turn the brightness down and leave everything else the same it will probably be impossible to see anything. It's impossible to give specific instructions because everyone's monitor is different, but it's well worth taking the time to get it right for you.

I agree that PoF added a lot of bright flashes to the game, although only on certain enemy attacks and a few other things like volatile magic. The only place where I feel like it's 'constant' is during the busiest parts of the Palawadan meta event, everywhere else it's occasionally flashes mixed in with other events. Which makes me think the OPs interpretation is probably incorrect - if this was some kind of scheme to keep us playing longer surely it would be everywhere, not just in one map which was recently changed to prevent anyone doing it more than once a day.

why they are all different topics

it's basic internet etiquette to do so. (not just here but on all forums of the internet)

can u stop trolling nothing u posted helped

Hes right though. You made 5 posts in a span of 30min-1h and 4 of those are 1 sentance long. Like.. why.. why not just make a single post named "Few suggestions" or something and make it a solid post instead of 5, which some of them look like random map chatter.

It may just be that they, like the bigger chunk of our community, enjoy a bright and colorful game. With silly graphics and quite a few immersion breaking things to wear and show off if that's your thing. There used to be far more complaints about the artstyle back when there wasn't anything too flashy apart from a few of the first legendaries.Simply said - their way of doing things sells well, nothing else to it even if I hate the focus on outfits as much as anyone else.

I mean, that pretty much describes video games in general. Even back to ones on consoles like the Atari 2600 they had bright flashy bits to keep them stimulating and engaging. Not as some grand conspiracy, but simply because many humans find it fun.

In modern games that questionable, or dubious, psychological effect is really only pasted onto loot boxes. Those use all the textbook queues from slots.

is OP serious?

yes i am serious bright lights have the effect to make u stay awake. its a interesting phenomenon almost like the daylight if u heard about that before

Seriously, you should turn off atleast the game if not your entire computer like 2 hours before you get to bed.Besides, you can set your screen to night mode which eliminates some of that brightness.

I would not be surprised if the OP is on to something. Everything from how rewards are presented to the eye catching nature of in game effecfs is implemented in a manner to influence player engagement. I think that it would be naive to think that this is not a design intention.

@Balsa.3951 said:do u continue the eye hurting bright flashes bcs u know it makes the player feels not sleepy and so plays longer ?

edit to make it more understandable Casinos doin the same things they have bright flashing lights, there are more similarities to game design and Casino enviroment but i stick with the lights now.

(ps before ppl think im so negative i love this game just my eyes hurt and i hope anet can see they dont need those extreme effects for getting that casino effect)

I do not think this was on purpose for that reason, if all mmos you probably should not be going after this one, but there are things you can get for your screens and there are also reshades you can try. But you may have a point.

Why necro an old topic when you can just make a new one about it? They want to discuss it in their own way its the general forums please remember that.

Because the points being made have already been made and discussed. Creating a new thread doesn't advance any further discussion.

But whatever. No need to seem condescending.

Well I am not saying all are true lol and thats not really a real conspiracy its way to mainstream.

And you where not trying to be? They did not discuss it clearly others did thats why people create posts, you do not control the forums and it applies to the rules therefor there is no need to even point something like this out.

Having beautiful and impressive visual effects certainly do have an effect in player engagement. However, GW2's effects are just bright camera flashes. They're not creative, artistic, beautiful, or create an immersive connection to the game. I used to be an artist and this kind of flashing is something only amateurs do, and is generally frowned upon by accomplished artists. There are tons of ways to make visually appealing effects and spamming camera flashes at players is not one of them.

Not only that, the amount of camera flashes and overall visual clutter in this game actually has a negative effect in gameplay. Any large events are a boring mindless snooze-fest. The players should be reacting to what the enemies are doing to create an engaging gameplay. Yet, all we are doing is mindlessly spamming our rotations since we cannot see the enemies' attacks. It's like fighting against a training dummy, except that you might just drop dead for no reason. Heck, after dozens of runs, I don't even know what some of the enemies even look like.

On a side note, I wish mods didn't merge Balsa's post with the original discussion. On the outside, these seem like they should be merged. Upon reading, though, the comments are very off-topic from the ongoing discussion. Anybody who jumps into this thread now is going to be confused starting with Balsa's replies. I know the mod merged 2 different posts and even I'm confused. :disappointed:

I don't blame ANet for wanting engaging physical effects for skill use. One criticism of some games is that the effects are underwhelming. However, effects that look good in solo or maybe small group content produce an entirely different effect when the players are engaging in large group content.

It's a fact that highly visible effects from many players are going to produce an effects melange. Given that, I find it mind-boggling that ANet chose not to build an effects slider into the game during design. Now, of course, it's probably too late. The measures taken may have worked for some players who dislike the technicolor dream-coat, but they obviously have not worked for some.

I've long maintained that there was a lot of. "Golly, that's awesome!" and way too little, "How will this effect customers?" in GW2 design. This issue smells like more of the same.

I've also noticed a marked increase in the visual effects that drown out vital clues (such as overlaying friend and foe aoe rings) that make it much more difficult to distinguish IFF's for casts and avoiding foe aoe rings. Friendly ones I don't need to worry about, which sort of lends itself to a viable solution.

It's not so much that I want all extra special effects turned off. My own are good, and the foe's as well. It distinguishes what I'm doing from what everyone else is doing and the foe's emotes and direction of attack are clearly visible. If the friendly fire effects were, at best rudimentary while the foe's effects remain the same, that would be hugely beneficial from both a tactical point of view, as well as much easier on the eyes.

It wouldn't be a matter so much of WHAT was cast, as WHO was casting it. Having effects is fine if the boss wasn't completely lost in the effects to the point that emotes can't be seen, foe aoe rings are overlaid by friendly to the point of invisibility and one can't even tell if they're striking from the front or the back (which DOES matter in the game mechanics). A setting that tones down friendly fire graphics to something rudimentary that doesn't blank out the bosses would be great.

After all, it's kinda nice to know from a foe emote when to dodge, or even if one HAS to doge, but can't because there's only a multicolored, sparkling blob where the boss should be, you can't see squat, and you're only spraying and praying that you're hitting it. Personally, MY enjoyment of the game would increase by a lot were the friendly weapons effects (casting and hitting and aoe rings) toned down to almost nothing. Lately, it's been like trying to shoot into the sun. And not to rhyme, that ain't fun.
