Update From the Guild Wars 2 Team

Hi everyone,

This past week there have been a lot of questions about the status of Guild Wars 2. I’d like to share with you a little about what’s currently going on at the studio and what it means for the game.

The Guild Wars 2 team is still committed to bringing content and feature updates to the game. The next episodes of Living World are already in development, Swiss tournament support is coming to PvP, we’re looking at more WvW events coming soon, and the return of the Super Adventure Festival is imminent. Our long-term plans for the game like World Restructuring and large-scale improvements to quality of life are still in the works.

The studio has recently been affected by layoffs, which is going to take some time to process. There’s no easy way for any team to adjust to that. We've had to say goodbye to friends and colleagues that we've worked alongside for years. We’re welcoming back some familiar faces to the Guild Wars 2 team that had been working on unannounced projects. After all is said and done, it's going to take some time for us to adjust to our staffing changes.

As the proverbial dust settles in the next few days we're going to re-evaluate our schedules to make sure that our releases are realistic and allow us the time to make sure they hit our internal quality bar. This means that some updates are going to see delays, like the recent Warclaw, as we regain our focus.

I’d like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all of you who have reached out in support of our studio family. Thank you for your patience in this trying time. We’re making every effort to keep things running as smoothly as possible and stay on track with releases. Rest assured that ArenaNet is not done with Guild Wars. And the team is not done with our tale of dragons, or our eternal conflict in the mists. There’s still lots for us to do together.

We’ll see you in Tyria,
z & the Guild Wars 2 Team

  • Thank you for the update, I wish you guys the best and I'm looking forward to more of your endeavors!

  • Love you all and sending my nerdy gamer good vibes to ANet! Do what is needed. Thank you for telling us the update. B)

Thanks very much for taking the time to keep us up to date.

As I've said in various topics my work has been going through something similar and all this has made me very thankful we're not under the same kind of public scrutiny as Anet, I can only imagine how much more difficult that makes it.

I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out in future. This mention of large scale QoL improvements is especially intriguing to me.

Thank you for the update. I think we're all looking forward to a re-invigorated team dedicating themselves to continuing GW2 and making awesome updates.

RE: Warclaw delay. Can we have ANet have a true 'sit down' discussion with long term WvW players as to the impact of this new feature on the game mode? While there have been many threads in the WvW forum, on reddit, and so on, there hasn't been any response from devs other than the delay of the mount. There are real concerns and a constructive discussion (if one can be had ;)) would benefit those who dedicate themselves to this game mode.

Thanks for the update, comunication is very important, especially in cases like this one, I don't have much to say, it was already speculated and discussed more than enough by now in these days in many threads.
I just hope you can readjust your projects soon enough, to make GW2 even greater.

  • Thanks for the update! Have loved the game since Guild Wars 1 came out and still love playing GW2.

Keep doing what you do, and keep being awesome, everyone.

If we want ANet to step up their game, then we must step up ours.

  • Thank you for the update and best wishes to everyone impacted by the layoffs.

  • Thanks for the update and please, take your time to get settled. Times like this are never easy.

That being said, is there any chance we may see some sort of roadmap with your future plans in a few weeks, when you feel confident sharing?

  • This will be my first post in years after self removal from your forums in protest. I stopped posting because of the poor communication between community and developers. I stopped posting because of overzealous moderators.

I believe my words have weight when I say thank you for opening the lines of communication. Please continue to do so going forward. Good luck to you and your team in this difficult time. I do not believe your team deserved this level of repercussions.

  • Thanks for the update Mike. We really need the Anet's voice these bad times.
    Thank you

Thanks for the update. Everyone there has been though a lot.
If things need to be delay so be it. Take the time you all need to regroup.

  • Thank you so much. We love you guys. <3

  • This is a good start for dev and player connections...

We are hopeful for the future, so let's work together to make it so.

  • Thanks for the update.

I'm glad to see y'all are taking time to take care of yourself. The game is best served when the people who work on it are feeling passionate about Tyria. If all goes well, in 12 months, a few weeks delay in Feb|March won't be remembered.

Hype is the path to the dark side. Hype leads to unfulfilled expectations. Disappointment leads to anger. Anger leads to disgust. Disgust leads to "oh, new shinies! I'm back!"

  • The layoffs have me bummed super hard. I feel sorry for all the people who this has effected.
Do you think the major updates for living world, fractals, raids, etc could happen 3 times per year? Rushed maps, a lack of CM, and sitting on hands makes for a game that fails to reach its potential. Giving the devs more time and perhaps hiring new ones to craft beautiful work would do gw2 a world of good.

  • what about raids? :( :( :(

  • Thanks for the update Mike! All the best to the team and hope to hear from you guys again soon!

He almost certainly means colleagues not working on GW2 are back with their old teams working on the game again. So familiar within the team.

  • Thank you for the update. I was so very sorry to see the mass layoffs, especially in the current economic climate. I hope those that left will find good work very quickly. There were a few surprises with the leavers, especially with the veterans...I wouldn't have thought NCSoft would want to part with so much collective experience. My initial reaction was concern as to what the impact of those departures - voluntary or not - would have on the future of the game. Your post is reassuring and I do appreciate you taking the time to address the community here in the forums.

Thank you for the update. I hope to see the Guild Wars franchise continue on for many years. I hope all those that lost their jobs can find great new opportunities soon.

    Somewhere chasing bags....

  • Hang in there guys, some of us still have faith in all of you!

  • An update post without any update. You really learn nothing.

  • Thx for speaking up in such hard times. The forum can be harsh. Even I can be harsh, but we all know it´s because everyone loves the game. I hope the future is bright despite this setback and i hope that you (Anet) will speakup more often. Welcome back !

  • I've been playing about a year and not particularly active on the forums - but I feel for your team and hope you do well going forward. I know many people who are silent on these matters as their way of respecting the struggle, but I wanted to be a voice from the less social players to say that your game is an amazing experience and I look forward to whatever future you share with us when you recover from the shake up.

Thanks for the update, wishing the best of luck and fast recovery to the team as well as best wishes to ever one leaving.

Here is hoping that soon we as a player base can be dazzled and entertained by more wonderful ideas from a passionate developer group which has brought stories and joy to millions over many years so far.

  • Thanks for the update Mister Z!

Sending love and good vibes to all of the ArenaNet family, past and current.
This past week has been a blow to you all and we fully understand that proverbial dust needs settling.
I would also like to say that I deeply respect the way you all have handled the communication to the community and the transparancy in that.

Y'all get back up on your feet, we'll make sure Tyria stays safe in the mean time.

Undoubtedly all of this struck us as well...and that's also when concern for the game kicked in.
It's understandable you guys need some time to recover after this.

Thanks again for updating us <3

Thanks for the update, sorry to hear about the layoffs. It’s a big change but I feel Gw2 will continue to improve.

No pressures but Gw2 has needed this focus for awhile now, i’m looking forward to seeing the new content.

Are we going to hear at any point about these unannounced projects, whether they have been cancelled and such?

Its reassuring to hear that you guys got our back on gw2 but a number of us is scared for the future of the studio and gw2 becomes less and less relevant over time.

No pressure ofc and i want to thank you for the update nonetheless.

  • Thanks so much for the update, stay strong with the losses within the company. I love this game and look forward to the future.

  • Thank you for the update Mr Z. Good luck to everyone at ArenaNet.
