What should a Roamer be doing?

So, I main ranger, and want to get into WvW and to my knowledge ranger isn’t really welcome in zergs but is considered a good Roamer.

So I was wondering what exactly should a Roamer be doing? Just running around flipping camps and smacking yaks? Or is there other stuff to be doing as well?

I’m pretty much a total noob to WvW at this point, I get the general concept, and have played in the past but nothing substantial.

How do you manage to get through the wall solo? Is it just a lot of supply running + very unobservant/distracted Zerg?

Good description. :)

Basically do anything you think can be negative for the enemy. Roaming isn't exactly an exact science. Find some roamers on your server, and ask them to team up so you can learn form them.

But yeah, as long as you get out of it alive, and the enemy is cursing your name, you're doing great!

You can do it by taking camps, scouting enemy movement and bringing down enemy walls (and informing your comm about it). Capturing camps, contesting important towers/keeps, taking down the walls, family business. Ranger is a great roamer. I find duo roaming more effective due to total supps to build siege but you can do it easily on your own.

The simplest answer is: whatever it wants.

If you want to help your server, taking care of the assets that the zergs/commanders aren't watching can be helpful. Sometimes. From my experience commanders rarely pay attention to scouting calls (or the map), but you can minimize the damage to some extent by retaking what enemy groups have taken.

If you want to actually enjoy the game though, I'll go back to the tried and true: do whatever you want.

When I roam I do the following:

  • Take camps + sentries and actively look for enemies near those objectives
  • Yak escort if it looks like our server is trying to upgrade towers/keeps
  • Scout in map/team chat if there's anything worth fighting
  • Respond to other scout calls if they need help
  • Set up supply/stealth traps near high traffic areas (mostly hills/bay areas)
  • Look for fights, find other roamers to party up with if things get too lopsided

idk there's probably other things you can do, set up catas for future use in sneaky areas if you know that objective is flipping constantly. Anything to help your server out, really.

Hope that helps.

Its also about strategic placement of siege. For example, Alpine Borderland. SET can be hit from the ruins (cata or treb), Bay (Treb), or by the hill in front of SEC (Can cat or can place it further back and hit with a treb. If you are smart, you can actually throw an enemy group off while dropping a wall

Agree with the above. Would also add mis-directionand, you want the other side to think you are more than just solo. Your job is to pull a havoc to chase you around or better yet draw a zerg. If your zerg is hitting one side of the map you want to draw attention elsewhere and pull as many others off as you can. If you come across a zerg on zerg fight you want to hit the othersides back line and people pulling back to heal. If there is a zerg fight you want to slow down reinforcements. If your zerg is on the move you want to hit structures with waypoints that might be used to reinforce where the fight will be at based on where yourside is moving. In general havocs and roamers fill similar roles but can be more ambitious with more numbers. In the same light if you feel you can't solo a tower or keep you can still punch holes in them and then use call outs to your side so they know it's vulnerable. Can't stress enough as a roamer or havoc run with guild siege and be traited to carry more supply and make sure you can claim. You should have a guild cata up in one run back to a supply camp. As a roamer there is also no reason not to regroup with a zerg if they need a few more to hit an objective, but if you can pull more off your side and have them not assist their side you are probably doing your side more good. If you are just getting run over, you are probably not. Key is have fun and cause some chaos. Good hunting!

Ohmygod, so many positive things being said for roaming rangers...I don't know whether to cry or gag. And I'm a ranger. Best bet, if your going to roam, get a combat buddy or two to roam with. You can act like bait while the enemy tries to kill you because for some reason it's "kill the ranger first, their squishy." You get used to it after six years.
