HoT versus PoF . . . where's the love?

Recommended Posts

HOT was the first expansion for GW2, and it was not as polished as it might have been. It introduced a LOT of new mechanics, including Masteries and Elite Specs. And it was a learning experience for the GW2 dev team. While HOT has been updated and improve a lot since release, there's a lot of players who remember it from the bad old days of first release, when it was very rough.

POF, on the other hand, did most things right from the beginning. There have been some corrections and balance changes, but it wasn't as bad as HOT. For one thing, the difficulty increase was not as drastic as it had been for HOT. Also, the Mount Masteries were much better executed than the mess that was HOT Masteries.

Both expansions have there good and bad points. But long term players have more bad memories of HOT than POF, and new players find HOT to be much more difficult, especially in the story. On the other hand, HOT map meta events attract far more players than the virtually non-existant POF map meta events.

Finally, you will see people complain about anything and everything. This month more hate goes to HOT than POF. Next month, maybe the complainers will gripe about how LWS2 didn't have enough new maps, or that POF is too hard and HOT isn't challenging enough. Remember that the people who are happy with the way the game is rarely post. So MOST posts complain about something or other!

Wow, you are really intelligent about all this!

It's always a grateful experience to learn from someone

with no massive ego. Thanks very much.

People don't hate HoT more than PoF, from what I've seen. In fact, it's the opposite.

HoT generally has a steeper learning curve, more depth, and is more preferred by veteran players who stick it out. The maps are very confusing at first, and can be frustrating to traverse. However, once the player learns the maps and has all the HoT masteries and PoF mounts, they're simply amazing. Many new players also seem to have trouble with HoT enemies. They're supposedly harder than PoF enemies. For veteran players, though, this isn't a problem. HoT also revolves more around group metas and replayability, which caters more to long term players. Years after release, players still do HoT metas. They're rewarding and fun.

PoF has less learning curve and is generally easier for newer players, but is much more shallow. The maps are flat and easier to understand. The enemies are supposedly easier than HoT. However, due to the annoyingly long aggro range, poor rewards from metas, and lack of replayability, veteran players don't stick with PoF. Players just go through PoF to get what they need, then don't return. There are few metas that players do as regularly as HoT.
