Escort event inactivity needs some tuning

I've had 2 escort events in a row now just randomly hit me with inactivity after finishing the last mob group before the event finishes. It feels really, really bad to be thrown out of rewards due to me "lacking participation" while I just killed the last mob before the event is done. Can this be tuned to be more forgiving? It nearly happened a 3rd time, I was standing right ontop of the escort npc and hitting everything that was getting in its way and all of a sudden I just get slapped with inactivity. If it wasn't for it being halfway done I wouldn't have been able to become "active" again. Note on the 3rd escort event I did, I was alone doing that event.

The text is a bug, a leftover from when you could lose out due to lack of participation. I can't think of any event in which the game rewards people differently due to that message.


HoT launched with "participation" decay for PvE, in part due to complaints that people would tag a few foes and then sit around doing nothing (which scaled up the difficult of the event, thus making it more difficult to complete). ANet tried to tweak if a few times and finally just eliminated it from consideration. What remains is:

  • WvW participation. Contributing past the threshold guarantees an increase in participation; it's only lowered when one doesn't contribute to any qualifying events.
  • HoT meta group rewards: as long as you meet the threshold, each event adds to your participation; you cannot lose it. If the total is 100%, you get the full reward (if it's less, you have a chance to get less) (and totals above 100% have no impact).

tl;dr it's a text bug; you can safely ignore it.

This is false and also not how the bug works. The bug that occurs relating to the text is when the text appears when the event isn't even running.

When the text appears while functioning normally you will lose the normal event rewards of experience, karma, gold and credit for the event achievements such as the specific achievements in HoT or daily event completer. You will still get the "bonus" rewards in form of the bouncy chest.

That being said there are only two events I can think of that was truely problematic for causing a false positive and both of them are part of the Central Pact camp event chain in VB. One was the lead escort and I think it was only for the doctor because the leaders have a somewhat lengthy conversation when they get into the camp and the event doesn't end until the conversation finish. The second is from the rescue 10 survivors event because of how slowly the survivors move. However I have not encountered the problem with them in a long time.

I've never had issue with encounter a misbehavior with this except when attempting to do more than one event at the same time that is too far apart. On the other hand I don't do much in PoF so maybe they introduced some other kinks in there. In terms of killing mobs for participation this can be a bit inconsistent. Sometimes it only counts when you kill mobs spawned by the events while other times killing anything in the event's range counts.

The bug that occurs relating to the text is when the text appears when the event isn't even running.Except the OP wrote,I've had 2 escort events in a row now just randomly hit me with inactivity after finishing the last mob group before the event finishes.I've experienced that text bug and it happens when the character leaves what used to be the participation locus (which itself moves, as expected, during the escort, but which should not move at the end).Despite seeing that text, I have received the same reward when the event completes.

In my experience, this can happen whether solo or not, whether sticking with the same escort or bouncing around the map, etc.

So there are a couple of possibilities:

  • Multiple bugs, independent of each other.
  • A single root cause, with a variety of symptoms not entirely consistent.
  • A single bug that is being described differently by different people, based on how it has presented to each.
  • Any of above, which is hard to see because English offers a lot of nuance in words & jargon, and those posting are being precise about different things (and imprecise about others).
  • Some combination of the above.

I can't recreate the bug I've seen at will. However, the way I described it has fit my experience. I accept other people might be seeing something else.I used to /bug report it regularly. I've stopped because (again, in my experience) it hasn't affected my rewards.

There is a bug in the game, the story "Forming the pact" is always kicking me out after I finish escorting the victims, my character is a mesmer, I have tried to do this final part of my story 10 times now and I always lose "connection" due to a server error, can someone help me?Thanks

Your issue has nothing to do with what this thread is about. Your issue has an 'official' thread with Dev posts: 'Story Disconnection'.

You can try using a VPN, continuously moving your character or using a skill in cutscenes, minimizing cutscenes, or any/all of the work-arounds found in said thread.
