Specialisation option request, select none.

I'm not even sure where to ask this, this is mostly a question aimed at Anet.

I like to play with builds, and I also like to give myself challenges. I also like to see my reliance or how far I can get with what I have - think of something similar, roaming naked in WvW, but I want to test more out of the box things like being able to take just one or two specialisation lines instead. Now the problem here is that I cannot "select none" when it comes to specialisation - I have to choose one. The only way around this is making a totally new character each time so I can zero out one or two of the specialisation slot. Normally if you just select a specialisation without selecting traits, you are still "tainted" with traits that come with the specialisation. Can you please consider an option for "none" so I can keep it empty instead of having to make a new character for this purpose?I totally understand if not, I am probably the only person in game who does this to seek weird personal challenges. Thanks for your time.

It already exists; it's called playing elementalist - once you're out of Fire attunement; Fire line becomes almost of 0% use, and this applies to all the lines.

Regarding other professions, I don't know why would you consider trait lines as the challenging part when you can for example build some pointless stats/play with missing pieces already.

Though it's your PoV, so I can't really tell.

Playing with missing pieces or stats does come into play, sometimes I even WvW with just a single weapon for the challenge. I'm taking about specialisations section here. For example if I just want air and arcane, or I just want water and nothing else. I don't know what you consider challenging. People scream for nerfs and buffs everywhere, I am just looking for fun and challenging stuff to do on my own.

It's not an unreasonable request though - adding "select none" or a reset option is trivial for anyone who's done programming. I play all kinds of manner - zerging, havoc/small scale, and ocassional "roam", I do not favour one over the other. I like to test builds and have fun in eotm too, I should have probably clarified that as well. I like to help my server, as many do, but I also like to have fun too in off coverage hours which happens to also be a nice time to test stuff when not much is going on.

The problem with your request is it opens up the ability for someone who doesnt really understand the game to handicap themselves pretty hard. Part of being "casual friendly" is making sure the player has as many options as possible while still offering them little possibility to hamstring themselves in the user interface. This coupled with solution @RedShark.9548 offered you above makes this a very niche request.

Funny request but I get it, OP.

I was playing my new Ranger yesterday with only one Pet and realized that after getting my Smokescale, I couldn't swap it into my first slot since the default pet was in it already (and I only have two).

I realized that if I had a third pet, I could move smokescale to one but I didn't have an (apparent?) option to deselect it and leave the slot empty, it seems. Not being able to deselect an option and only swap felt frustrating to me! Same thing for un-equipping your weapons - no "brawl" punch moves like in the mini game.

There's bigger changes I want to see in the game but it does seem like an odd 'feature' which I'm guessing serves two purposes:

  • As a form of "failsafe" to keep players from accidentally ruining their builds (my friend boosted and hasn't touched their traits, weapons, etc in over a month since doing it. If they were missing a traitline, I'm certain they wouldn't notice/care)
  • Making things easier to balance/assuring that every player in an area should be capable of completing all events, assuming they meet the correct level requirements. If you are in a level 35 area and you are 37 and died, you know it is because you either need to work on your class's mechanics or your approach in this particular battle. If you are missing a whole traitline then maybe you can't beat that enemy/event no matter what you do, despite it being advertised as complete-able.

And what exactly are you "testing" by picking a single spec?

I think the reality is that there would be almost no value add to allow players to have no selected traits, so probably won't be changed.

Here is a thought though ... if you level up a character to 80 without selecting a traitline ever (through tomes) ... does that solve your problem? I think you can.

It's moreso seeking challenges and having fun. I like imposing limits and see how far I can survive by outsmarting an opponent (just like naked roaming etc). A kind of weird analogy would be like chip music where in the old days of mod music you only had 4 channels to play with so you had to be creative. No worries though I'll do it like I've done in the past by using a new character. Thanks for everyone's input.

Ok, wasn't even looking for a solution here, but did it on accident and thought that's what you wanted:You'll need any espec unlocked, especs can only be picked in 3rd 'spec slot'.Slot1 -pick "Core Spec 1"Slot2 -pick Core Spec 2Slot3 -pick E-spec

Then change Slot3 to "Core Spec 1", you're now left with 2 specs:Slot1 -emptySlot2 -Core Spec 2Slot3 -Core Spec 1

Now re-pick E-spec for slot 3. After that Change it for Core Spec 2, now you're left with:Slot1 -emptySlot2 -emptySlot3 -Core Spec 2.

At this point you can pick any spec you want on slot3 and you'll have a single spec build. Don't think you can have 0 specs picked and obviously won't work if you don't have expansions to unlock especs.

Thanks alot for this man, props. I totally forgot that switching espec can clear it out. You have done me great justice!
