Mounts didn't hurt WoW - I actually preferred flying and the lack of it being readily available is one of the reasons I no longer play WoW. If WoW has been hurt by anything, it's designers who forgot the original magic of the game -- it was still there in the second and third expacs, and then they thought they'd reinvent the wheel, and it hasn't been the same since. The griffon looks really cool imo.
