  1. It looks good visually. In the sense that we find good colors and normal saturation and not the horror of shing jea. But it looks like a generic maguma map, I even had the impression of seeing Auric Bassin a few times .. The textures, vegetation, tree trunks and even some structures are exactly  the same.

It has absolutely nothing to do with echovald. All the originality of the guild wars 1 area is lost: no more stone, no more sinister and gothic atmosphere, no more yellow stained glass with amber, no more mysterious and oppressive environment. It's a total failure at this level once again

But I understood the reason during the live. Echovald's developer makes it clear that she has never played guild wars 1. How do you want to respect the soul and style of this iconic map without ever having played the original game. Mind-blowing....

As for the content, we haven't seen much, the events seem basic and without challenge as usual but we will see later. The new faction and the jade structures, it's totally ridiculous, however, I already miss the kurzicks people 😔

It took 2 minutes of research to show only GW2 is profitable this Q3 but hey, keep spinning that yarn all you want, it ain't gonna change facts.

Of course they  have better results..

there has been no content for over 2 years and suddenly an extension is coming, obviously it was going to go up.

it is necessary to compare with the other periods of extension and we must all admit it here: it is a bitter failure!

  3. The new assessment with the famous Q3 which contains the launch of EoD in pre-purchase with the deluxe / collectors.

It's pretty downright mediocre ... Going from 16 to 19k, not even 20% increase. Besides the previous expansions had a much larger increase and PoF had risen to 25k. There's really 0 hype for the extension.

This is more a symptom of overly excited fanbases rather then wasted potential for those characters. Fanbases(not just GW's) tend to latch onto specific aspects of a franchise, and build ever increasingly over the top expectations for those things as the years go by and their stories aren't done, and then claim "wasted potential" for those things when the story inevitably doesn't turn out the way they wanted. In reality, the story never would have, because the series never set them up for that, and they never were that to begin with.

Using Lazarus as an example, the Mursaat, as a species, were gimmick spellcasters whose power was destroyed way back in the GW1 era when we found a way to counter their gimmicks. By the end of GW1 the Mursaat had become fodder for the players, and were then outclassed by the Titans, who themselves became fodder for the player characters. Lazarus himself was played as a stooge in EOTN when he got outplayed by one of his servants, and the PC, who ruined his attempt at reforming himself. The situation only got worse for the Mursaat during the War in Kryta, where Asuran tech helped further turn the Mursaat, and their constructs, into fodder for the normal people.

By the time GW2 rolls around the strength of heroes is way beyond that of GW1 PCs, making a singular Mursaat a non threat to begin with. Not only that, but the potential force said Mursaat could have used, aka the white Mantle, where portrayed as horribly incompetent stooges themselves, who had spent the better part of the last 250 trying to seize the Krytan throne and failing constantly. Not to mention their order was split because Caudecus didn't give to flips, and only cared about his own personal power.

There's really no logical way for Lazarus to be a big issue by the time of GW2, not any more then he was anyways. The increased power of heroes, the long standing nullification of the Mursaat's gimmicks, the division among the Mantle, and the unity of the five races, would prevent any Lazarus story from being expansion level. At best we would have gotten the same story we did, but Baltha-Lazarus would ave been real Lazarus, and he would have fled to/died at Orr after the Mantle's loss at Lake Doric, and then Balthazar would just be introduced later.

The same is true of Joko. Joko was a moron who failed to capture Elona hundreds of years ago, failed to break out on his own, failed to reclaim his army by himself, only managed to capture Elona between GW1 and GW2 because no one really tired to stop him, failed to stamp out the Sunspears, failed to stamp out the Order of Shadows, failed to keep a tight grip on his Empire, leading to mass civil unrest, failed to take Amnoon despite decades of trying... and generally failed at everything he did. Even if Balthazar, and the player didn't show up his empire was on the brink of collapsing within a decade or two anyways. Joko was, himself, never portrayed as some expansion level threat. He was a regional warlord who was a Bangar style side story.

And yet despite the contempt you seem to feel for Joko and the Mursaats, their rather failed story  on gw2 remains far superior to the whole soporific scenario about the dragons.

It shows how, in the hands of a quality screenwriter, they would have far more potential than all those repetitive and bland stories about elders dragons.

Of course we could expand the history of the Mursaats just by exploiting the island of Janthir and imagining lots of things there. For joko, they can  give the origin of his power in the past, explain the reason for his transformation into a lich and and enrich the threat of the scarab plague that has been ridiculously botched in kourna

  5. I am a little reassured.

I find shing jea absolutely abominable on all levels .But there ,it really looks like guild wars 1 with more vegetation, the cathedrals look splendid,  wait and see friday

Thankfully based on the stream, the brightness was dulled a bit after the initial footage and screenshots were taken.

IMO, based on the stream, Shing Jea is perfectly fine. And it's also perfect with it being described as traditional, rural, and simple compared to the city/cities.

I still find it abominably ugly .And yet if there is a strong point in guild wars 2, this is the  environment, I have rarely been disappointed by a map in this game. The only time I was shocked was by the massacre they carried out in Kourna.

Afterwards, shing jea was one of my favorite places on gw1, I've been waiting for it during 9 years so my expectations were high. And I admit that I expected better considering what they have accustomed us to with HOT and POF.

Then I'm not the only one to say it, just read the comments next to the stream and the hundreds of feedback on reedit. This is one of the first times that a map is so controversial, so there is a major problem. Hope they will correct the colors / saturation.

to be fair, Elona should have gotten zero advancement in technology due to Joko hindering any attempt to advance in their technology so the people can remain easily controlled. It is quite easy to keep Elona the same atmosphere as GW1 with slight changes to the region when their society should have obtained zero progress in advancement and only changes is the addition of Joko's undead army designed buildings and a few new towns and maybe one or two new cities.

By design, Elona should have gotten the least change in GW2 due to Joko's influence which they did represent since many people in Elona are unaware of common things that have become very common technology in Core Tyria.

it is quite true what you say. Afterwards, in the new shing jea, it's not necessarily the buildings that pose the most problem to me. It is especially the bright colors, the luminosity, the shape of the rocks, and even a little the sky that is totally different. All these elements change the whole aspect of the island. I hope it will not be the same on all cantha 😞

I hope they will make the green a little less bright, they still have time to make it a little darker until february. Like this, at least:

Is it because they made the grass too green and added a lot of green jade color and paintings on building and etc around Shing Jea Islands?

I remember back in GW1 there was signs of attempt to design the island to have a lot more plants if they could but graphics and limits of GW1 engine and computer system of that era probably limited how much they could have added into the Shing Jea Island.

GW2 graphic style of trying to reflect paintings made 3d could have also affected the coloring of places as well which I know certain people will not like since the painting art style would make certain aspect of color way too bright.

The Plant life around Shing Jea Island is not a issue for me anyways since it is how I imaged Shing Jea Island to be like if GW1 never had their graphic limits but ya the buildings has a bit too much emphasis on green jade coloring.

They can tone down the green brightness a bit but guess they had a lot of focus on certain  ancient china building designs.

It's a bit of everything, the style of the buildings is too different, the colors are much more "fluorescent", there is a huge problem with the saturation. Shing jea on gw1, even though it's colorful, there are less bright colors that burn the eyes, it's calming / restful. And there is also the music that plays a lot.

The POF desert is different from the one of gw1 for example but there is the same light and atmosphere, I really felt that we were in the same place but with years of evolution. For shing jea, i am really shocked with the difference. If only, if it was different BUT pretty, but for the moment I find it really ugly.

Finally, we can easily see the difference with the screens below:

For those that want GW1 Cantha, go play GW1 and visit it again. I am expecting a GW2 Cantha, whatever that may be. I am sure there will be nods to the first Kaining City but this is a different game. Set your expectations accordingly. I look forward to having fun with many of you in that game. I hope Greyhawk joins us too 😉

We are not asking for the same thing, obviously there will be changes in 250 years as in POF.
We just want to feel the same atmosphere, the unique style of cantha, the same soul , the same kind of brightness and sensation.
You can make the buildings and the environment evolve while keeping the same unique style.

If they make the extension to cantha, it’s to attract the fanboys of this place so what’s the interest to totally change the atmosphere...

Especially since right now, it’s to do something much uglier than the original. I went back to visit shing jea on gw1 and it is a thousand times more enjoyable to watch than the presentation of shing jea in video of gw2.
You can upgrade a place without turning it into a filthy green fluorescent dung, you know.

For the moment shing jea is an insult to gw1 players, simply. We’ll see the other 3 maps.

As I said I am not trying to be rude towards him nor insult him on his choices. It has always been the best option to not buy something you won't like. However, I also support the ideal that we can't really judge a book by their cover since experiencing something and seeing something usually are difference experiences and sometime they may like it if given a chance.

Both options have risks since a person may not like the experience but sometimes we never really know for certain ourselves until we actually experience the thing.

Afterwards we are already starting to know a lot about this extension: we have seen all the specializations which are mostly bland and uninteresting to play, we know that there will be no raid and fractal so all the HM content will be determined by the strikes, we also know that shing jea does not look like anything on gw1 and is even much uglier with awful colors, there is no pvp, no new race and no new class,  a more than laughable feature: fishing ...

So personally on my side, my purchase will be 100% based on the content of the strikes  and the look of the next maps. If it doesn't look like the cantha that I used to know, I'll skip my turn.

And I don't really see all that much blue in that video. While it's not as green as the Solid Ocean Fractal, most of it looks pretty much like tints of green to me.

Our eyes must surely see the shades of colors differently. But in any case, even if you find it closer to green, it is much more pleasant to watch than the fluorescent green of the golem or the one of the fractal

I'm already not holding much hope on how cantha now looks. As far as i'm concerned, how's it been described, I could see the Jade sea maps being a copy/paste of the PoF maps (but water/ jade obviously) and Echovald, my favourite area in Cantha being a copy/paste of HoT maps. As far as the city, that's going to be totally different, the sewers housing the 'tech' and unreachable, and any 'old' buildings crumbled into the sea. I'm not so worried it might look more modern there, but I hope they haven't totally sucked the life out of the other areas just to be relevant and edgy.

Yes I agree with you on everything you say except the echovald forest. I find the few images we had a little more reassuring than the rest, it looks quite close to guild wars 1 with more vegetation.

For example, the fort Aspenwood is exactly the same style as in gw1:

Jade usually is green though. If you just search "raw jade" on google, you'll have a hard time finding images that do not contain green. Even the bluest stones I found were mostly green'ish on colour.

Even if I google for GW1 Jade Sea, most images I see are green. And the other ones are Turquoise, which kind of still is a shade of green.

I don't find it green at all, or really very discreetly. I almost only see blue in this video.

Afterwards, not all eyes see colors the same way. But in any case, we are very far from the green of guild wars 2

The Golem looks similar refined Jade you can find in jewellery. This is fine, because the golem's jade is refined.

But if the raw Jade Sea looks like that, we have a problem indeed. In my opinion, the Jade Sea should look similar to the Solid Ocean Fractal, which looks rather similar to raw jade.

Even the jade of the fractal, it looks nothing like the one of gw1, way too green.

it's so much nicer to see a bluish petrified sea like on gw1, much more pleasing to the eye. But I'm not naive, it will not be the case.

So  i  hope that the green is as less fluorescent as possible.

  14. I do not understand the point of returning to cantha if it is to totally destroy the style and the soul of this continent.

Obviously there must be changes during 250 years but if it is to go back there and not recognize the place, I do not understand ...if they did EOD on cantha, it was to bring back lots of fanboys . So if cantha no longer has anything in common with guild wars 1, many players will be disappointed.

If it was to do something totally different, you might as well leave cantha aside and go to a totally different place. Space is not lacking on the world map...

Shing jea already has nothing to do with the original, it's even uglier than before. So if it's to bring back some futuristic kaineng and the jade sea with ugly fluorescent green (when we see the jade color of the golem of the new engineer specialization), it's going to be hopeless.

Kaineng on guild wars1 had something unique, a real originality, if it is to make something generic and bland already seen in many video games, it's sad.

And please stop putting this green everywhere, it is one of the most unpleasant colors to look at apart from the vegetation .. for example the jade on gw1 it was bluish, so i dont understand why to change totally his aspect .

  15. I'm a cantha fan on gw1 But for the moment nothing pleases me about this expansion, I find it even sad to ruin such a potential with such a jewel in the hands

I'm waiting to see the look of the echovald forest, the jade sea, kaineng and the level of the strikes before deciding but for the moment I'm very very negative about this expansion, no hype.

Cyberpunk green is what I call it. 🤢

Perhaps I've missed something here, but... have we fast-forwarded about a thousand years? 🤨

That's a background image from the offical EoD page. The center was darkened intentionally so that text and other elements placed there is HTML/CSS would be readable.

While I agree on the sentiment regarding the pleasantness of the GW1 Jade Sea design, there are parts of the video showing how the blue water has mixed with the green jade. Since they've only extracted the jade for their technology, it makes sense that it's green.

Such a toxic neon-green, however, was a truly bad choice indeed.

I have always had trouble with the green color except obviously for the vegetation. I found the bluish jade to look a lot more like a petrified sea than a fluorescent green .. it was sober and calming to watch.

So if we still have to put up with green, I would do with it, but make it pleasing to the eye and not like the golem's.

  17. With the arrival of the new Engineer specialization, we can clearly see what the jade will look like on EOD by looking at the golem

I still find it extremely fluorescent green and quite aggressive for the eyes. I don't understand this obession with this type of green on EOD which is almost the same on shing jea. The jade did not have this aspect at all on gw1, it was even quite bluish and much more pleasant to look at.

That’s absurd unless you get your worth from how much you’ve played a video game compared to others.

Of course it has worth even if every single other player has one. It means an amulet with ascended strength stats on every single character you have, able to swap stats as builds change, and able to swap upgrades. There’s a ton of utility there.

Now, maybe you already own Transcendence so you already have that utility. Maybe this one will have a different visual effect? We don’t know. But if you can only appreciate something if other people don’t have it, that’s pretty sad.

We are talking about a LEGENDARY object, not something common. It has to deserve the title.

That something else is easy to obtain, I do not see too much of a problem. But this is supposed to be the rarest and most desirable weapons / armor / trinkets in the game. So yes it must be a minimum hard to have and not accessible to everyone... otherwise it destroys the value of the thing.

It's always been the interest of titles and rare items on a mmo. That a limited amount of people get them to show off your abilities on the game. If everyone had the legendary raiding armor, it would be pointless to wear it for example, it would become mundane and tasteless.

But we surely have 2 different conceptions of what should be a rare object so we will enter into an endless debate.
